I had a friend who could read Quenya just because he spoke Finnish.  He was amazing, fluent in 9 languages and could get by in 81.


He was my Hebrew and Yiddish teacher

Languages are cool.  My friend, though Australian, spoke Hebrew with a Russian accent.  When we met some Russian Jews they though it was hilarious.  We thought it equally funny their English had a New York accent.


Finnish is the only language on Earth with a 1:1 Phoneme to Grapheme relationship.


That may be due to it being one of the only languages to survive the various conquerings of Europe.  Or just a coincidence.

I speak the "Moomin-variety" of Swedish common to for the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland xP I can talk to someone from Sweden and they might have a hard time understanding some things I say even tho it's basically the same language with only a few minor changes x3

And someone once told me that Finnish is hard to learn because the grammatical rules are so "new" and the language haven't developed as much as older languages like English have.. (The first book written in Finnish was published in 1543)

Actually Finnish is learned faster by children than most other languages.  The Phoneme/Grapheme conversion means that each sounds can only be written one way and each letter or combination of letters can only be pronounced one way (unique in the whole world) in this sense it is perfect.  But the writing may be much newer than the spoken language whose origins predate all languages surrounding it geographically.


I love languages and the neuroscience and genetics of language.

In defense of English... *spits on Noah Webster* ...it has an enormous vocab with heavy duplication that allows for subtle distinctions.  THis means it has the descriptive power of, say, German, but retains the poetic strengths of the romantic languages (French, Italian, Spanish etc).  So it's 'flaws' grant it versatility.
