Black OC's
« on: May 08, 2011, 12:07:52 AM »
Ok so I tend to avoid having characters that are black in my art because I have a trouble one, coloring (which is the least of my worries) and two having the lines show up. Any artiest out there have any advice when it comes to coloring art with a character that is black, not a dark gray, black.

I dont know if this will be much help, but normally when i colour a black character, i make the lines themselfs dark grey in certain places to seperate things (arm joints, neck, fingers) it works and it doesnt look to bad either.

Absolute black doesn't exist in real life, unless there is a complete absence of light. Things that are "black" are affected by the lighting and reflection of color from other objects. So unless you're coloring in a more cartoony style, you should never use absolute black to color a black-furred/scaled character. As long as you shade it correctly, it can easily be understood that the character is "black" even if it is not absolute black.

I usually use a shade of dark grey:

In a more cartoony style, white lines or highlights can usually be used to keep the shapes:
