The perceivable difference between 1 and 1,4 is the same as 11 and 16 when measured in linear units.
This is because human perception is logarithmic which functions on a ratio-basis rather than linearly.

Say your speaker amplifier has an output power of 50 mV. Doubling it to 100 mV will sound just equally much louder as halving it to 50 mV will sound quieter.
