It's a Swedish thing.
Translated straight from Swedish, it's "sour herring"
And the stench is quite unbearable, which means people generally open the cans outdoor, in a tub of water.
There's this one story of a can of surströmming exploding aboard a plane, and that caused them to have to do an emergency landing, as well as picking apart the whole plane to get the stench to go away.
That's why it's now banned from being brought aboard planes at all.
And, I can't say what it tastes like, but it most definitely smells off.
Friends say it tastes ok tho.
