Actually the brackets do make difference, firstly it removes confusion over which to count first and secondly.
Also, BODMAS in all glory, but bare in mind division and multiplication has equal priority and is therefore counted from left to right, without the brackets it would be equal to (4x2)/8.

There are quite many variations of the abbreviations for the Order Of Operations, BODMAS, PEMDAS, BEDMAS etc..

While different people may say different, the most universal way (and the way computers count) is to divide them into 4 groups:
1. parentheses/brackets
2. exponents and roots
3. multiplication and division
4. addition and subtraction

Each of the groups have equal priorities and should be calculated from left to right if such errors can be caused.

The most accurate calculators and online services (i.e. Wolfram Alpha) as well as all programming languages to my knowledge does follow this. I am yet to find any form of equation or whatnot where this way does not give the same result as said tools.
