The only conventions in Canada that I can see, are in Edmonton (Fur-Eh!, 01-03 May 2015) and Vancouver (VancouFur, 27 February – 2 March 2014). Both would involve considerable costs in transportation and accommodations. And I can find no meet ups in my area.

well look at it this way, atleast you have local cons (sort of) the number of furry related cons where I live is 0,I'd have to fly to the states or to whatever convention I want to go.

There may be meets in your area, you'd be surprised (meets are NOT cons, they're basically just when furries routinely meet up, maybe once a month or even more frequently)
