Short DST failure?

Alright... I know I suck in computers so that's a bit why I am coming here to get some help from some furs who knows the stuff. So here's my lil story...


Earlier today, I noticed that my laptop was getting slower so I did a check up in my boot menu to only find that the Short DST test failed. And now what's even worse is that my computer is now freezing every 2 minutes... I'd like to know what actually is a short DST and what the failure test means... Thanks for the help!

Personally, I don't know, but I do know that usually things like this have an error code that comes up for them. If there is an error code, my suggestion is to google the error code and see what comes up. However, if not then I don't know, hopefully other people have better advice

Seemingly, either the file system is corrupt or the hard drive is failing...

Which version of Windows are you running and what brand is your laptop?

I'm runing on Windows 7 home Family premium 64-bits and my laptop is an HP pavilion G6.... Hope it helps =/

Hmm, it seems to be a hard drive failure
Note this does not mean the hard drive has died, just that it is failing, which explains that it is able to run but is getting the random freezes.

If you still have warranty on it:
I suggest you call tech support and have it replaced.

Remember backup your files! ...as the repair service may not move your files to the new drive meaning you'll lose them forever.

To do this, try booting up in safe mode and if that doesn't work without issues, run Ubuntu (clicky) off a CD or USB stick and try copying as many files as possible to an external hard drive or USB stick.

Then it's just to send it off to the repair service...

If you do not have any warranty remaining:

You need about $50-100, a Windows installation disc (see below if you don't have this)

1. You can try calling tech support and see what they'll say but expect to have to pay for them to fix it, make sure you'll ask them what it'd cost and all.

2. Replace it yourself! (I suggest checking the price for having the repair servie do it before you continue)
...go to your local computer store and look a 2.5" hard drive. Ask an employee for a laptop hard drive if you're unsure. If you've looked up the price for having the repair service replace the it, this is where you compare what'd be the cheapest, if buying a new one is cheaper, buy it!

Now for replacing it with the old one:

First of all, back up your files!
To do this, try booting up in safe mode and if that doesn't work without issues, run Ubuntu (clicky) off a CD or USB stick and try copying as many files as possible to an external hard drive or USB stick.

Then once that's done, follow these steps to replace your old drive: here (clicky)

When you're done you need a Windows installation disc.
If you don't have this, download it from here (clicky) and burn it to a disc using IMG Burn (clicky)

Then boot up from the disc and install Windows on your new hard drive, it should be rather straight forward but it will take a while. Once it's done installing, enter the serial that can be found on a sticker (usually found on the bottom or underneath the battery) of the laptop.

Then it's just to restore all files you backed up (if you could) and re-install all your software.
