Yep. The swine flu broke out in my area. It originated in the Schertz-Cibolo area and made it's way down to New Braunfels, Texas. I don't have the disease, but it's screwing up my regular lifestyle anyways. School has been cancelled until May 11th and I'm not allowed to do much outside of going to work. I can't really go out and socialize anymore.
Discuss.
-
Its breaking out near where i live too, nothing seems to have closed down yet, but when and if they do, ill be ready, but not worried. no im not worried very much because A: its much more mild up where i am, and B: i dont have a point B yet, either way im not that worried, we humans always seem to survive
-
I think it's going to take ages for the disease to reach this backwoods country or at least i hope so....
-
its in Australia to now, first they thought that 4 people might have it (2 days ago) and now its 88.
-
I have full confidence that the World Governments will ultimately be able to eradicate this filthy little agitation, and I hope that the people will remain calm as the disease is being purged from existence.
-
ROFL i went to the medical center today (checkup on my back), and its completely full with people wanting the vaccination.......which doesn't exist
-
It hasn't broken out in my area yet, so I still have to go to school :umm: so yea...
-
the last time a checked 50 people have a mild case of it in the us, but that was yesterday. the flu is a great virus (i mean what it does is bad, but it's well suited to survival, i mean we have vaccines for most strains, but there is that .1% of the strains that don't die and they reproduse and make a new stronger strain and they survive, and the old vaccine dosen't work on it. come on thats pretty cool and amazing that one solitary strand of RNA can survive so well in out modern world. unlike mezels (i think this is the one) that we completly wiped out, it couldn't adapt fast enough to survive.)
-
No matter how sophisticated these things can get, they are still worthless single-celled organisms that can never even begin to hope for a long life, not while Humans are around to stamp them out, and back into the Fiery Pits from whence they came. Humanity will not tolerate the existence of this swine flu, and like all things deemed unworthy to live at our feet, they will be wiped out for the good of Mankind.

Holy schiscamagizzles! Just noticed, you're from Finland! Woo! Well, as Grimsy said, hasn't spread here yet.

You know, you can call it worthless all you like, but I'm going to laugh if it gets you. Just because of the sheer irony of the situation. I'm not saying that I hope you get it, I'm just going to laugh if you do. And, if humans are around to stamp out diseases, then why can't we cure cancer, aids or even the common cold? I'm just saying, maybe we could learn more about diseases if we weren't so quick to rub them out. Not that I want diseases to run rampant, I just think we should study things like how they can rapidly reproduce and clone themselves. If we could harness that power, we could end world hunger and many other important issues like that.

You are absolutely correct
Words of wisdom my friend, words of wisdom
-
Yeah they cancelled the Regional Track meet for my region and postponed the State UIL meet here in Texas. I am in school still and those things are important to me but not as important as saving lives.

scy, we already do study them, there is a big resherch company employed by the us government that is studying virusus. some people don't even believe that virusus are living, they are just codes of RNA, they get into a cell (because they are so small they can slip right into the phospho lipid bi layer) head to the neculus and instead of the regular cell's DNA being copyed, the virus gets copyed, then teh cell just keeps copying the virus over and over untill the cell explodes and sends all the copys of the virus out in all directions, each infecting other cells. (at least thats the simplifyed version from my teacher) so technically the virusus are just codes of RNA, and then this gets into what classifys a living organism. must it be a cell? then what is a virus if it's not living? so many questions.
-
Yeah...I just heard today that there are cases in Maine now, in Kennebec County and York County.
I live in Sagadahoc County which is right beside Kennebec County, so yeah...
I'm kind of tempted to go buy some surgical masks, especially since I have to deal with people's bottles and cans for the next three days. >_>
But I'm a very paranoid person. lol.

You misinterpreted what I said. Besides, I already know how they rapidly multiply. I'm just saying that if we could harness how they multiply, we could easily use that power for many things. I learned the process of how they multiply almost three years ago. I've known plenty of information on them. I know that we study them constantly, but I think we shouldn't study THEM so much as WHAT they do.

As a friend of mine said... "Right when we thought avian flu was the worst thing out there.. THE PIGS MADE THEIR MOVE!"
-
Yep...We have a few kids at my school here in Tennessee..One of 'em's mah friend...But I'm not even gonna BEGIN to give an opinion about the scientists or how they work like they do.....it just seems too complicated for me...=_=.......
-
As a friend of mine said... "Right when we thought avian flu was the worst thing out there.. THE PIGS MADE THEIR MOVE!"
Oh great...only a matter of time until our dogs and cats make their move as well >.<

It just made it to Philly =[ this stuff is serious! I'm actually scared :'(

Wait it's in Maine now, only a matter of time till it reaches New Jersey...........
-
I'm just curious, has it hit anywhere near Florida yet...because I really don't see that many people sick in my area....
-
If it ends up in Jersey, canceled school or not, i'll be miffed...... cause people i'm friends with could come down with it.....
-
Its in the new jersey, delaware, and Philadelphia area. :'(

nah i dont think it has.

Don't talk such rot! The bunnies are next in line to try eradicating us! XD
Oh, and it's no longer called Swine Flu in America. The government calls it the H1-M1 Virus. Apparently, Europe decided not to allow any of our exported pork product because they thought you could get the swine flu from eating pork. So, the government changed the name to keep the virus from affecting our economy.

Watch your language.

Nah, hunters like me will stop that uprising. But squirrels have a good shot at pulling it off.
-
Well, if deer ended up being the next virus...killing them wouldn't stop it really...people eat the meat and even though being cooked should kill bacteria, some will probably still stay alive...
It's going to be the cute little animals that everyone trusts easily (like the bunnies!)... >_>
I need a surgical mask! <_<
heh...heh... *nervous laughter*

Okay, from my understanding in South Carolina, some kids went down to FL for their senior trip and came back with 12 cases at a public school in Mauldin.. (Which is awfully close to where I live.) And also there are some cases in Newberry. I don't know if it is in FL, but I feel it's relevant. That school in Mauldin is closed down for now, and my school's been getting circulars that emphasize washing hands to prevent disease. People here are panicked, and there are idiots running around with medical masks and rubber gloves on in school.

http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-sci-swine-reality30-2009apr30,0,3606923.story
As the World Health Organization raised its infectious disease alert level Wednesday and health officials confirmed the first death linked to swine flu inside U.S. borders, scientists studying the virus are coming to the consensus that this hybrid strain of influenza -- at least in its current form -- isn't shaping up to be as fatal as the strains that caused some previous pandemics.
In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.
"Let's not lose track of the fact that the normal seasonal influenza is a huge public health problem that kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. alone and hundreds of thousands around the world," said Dr. Christopher Olsen, a molecular virologist who studies swine flu at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison.
His remarks Wednesday came the same day Texas authorities announced that a nearly 2-year-old boy with the virus had died in a Houston hospital Monday.
"Any time someone dies, it's heartbreaking for their families and friends," Olsen said. "But we do need to keep this in perspective."
-
It hasn't hit us yet, but they had a case about 30 or so miles away. Our school has restricted all school related student travel through May 11. Thankfully, that doesn't interfere with any of the trips I'm going on. Yet.
-
It's only been mild cases here in Phillly! woot! and new jersey is safe.
-
YAY NEW JERSEY IS SAFE! *breathes a sign of happiness*

Yesterdays news said that there has been 2 possible infections in Finland(I wonder how it got to this backwoods country....)
time to get a 3 € gas mask from the army's extras xD

I bet you those infected are tourists.....
as far as i know they were traveling at the time.
one was in Spain and the other one in Mexico
-
Well there's your answer. Mexico is where the disease began.
-
Yes, Mexico is the source of the Disease. A boy came over to visit family and died. He had a severe case. No one has died in the U.S. yet because all of the cases have been mild. Mexico city is like a third world because of all the poverty.

Dangerous, natural flu? Or gov't plot?
...
It's not flu season,
Didn't come out of the east.
Flu always is tracked and follows a path.
This popped up out of "nowhere"
It has race and gene specific handles on it that scream manufactured to any bio scientist.
It has been marveled by doctors as a "skeleton key" virus, that can infect almost any creature, because of it's pig and bird and human factors.
A 6 scale earthquake occurred in Mexico city right on the eve of this epidemic. (google: dod breifing secretary of defense s cohen earthquake weapons - it comes right up at you. It's been declassified but no details.)
The real give away, is that it's being so massively hyped by everyone. Flu kill thousands every year, that's normal. The news has SEVERELY white washed the real figures, people on the ground in Mexico are saying 2000 deaths.
No one knows for sure, whether this is just the forefront, the trigger for the next virus, a scare to accept more degradation of freedoms, or if this is actually going to mass kill millions like the Spanish flu of the early 1900's.
Basically, this may be the cause for everyone to run in fear to the "solution", and Baxter, the same people who were found in Britain to be giving the homeless bird flu, has been chosen for the vaccine manufacturing.
Dr Eric Pianta - University of Texas(google him) got a standing ovation at Saint Edwards in Austin, for saying kill 90 percent of the population. This isn't an idle thought. The UN, the kissengers, they want an 80 percent reduction in the population by 2012.
This thing is clearly manufactured, the real question though, is this a real killer or is this just a scare tactic to sign away more laws. The scariest part is, the FEMA camps and the mass graves now make a lot of sense. Camps for those who don't take the shots, graves for those who do.

Thank you so much for spreading fear, rumors, propaganda and what might be false information. Thank you so much for doing that.

Useless blathering removed for better viewing
Just when the forum begins to compose itself, knowing that the World Health Organization will handle the situation, and learn that this "Swine Flu" is just a lesser pox, you begin spouting lies.
Whether or not this is a joke, spreading false information against the Government should not be taken lightly.
-
"Furry-Forums: Serious business"
Really now, I was just stating a theory, no need to get hostile.
-
i just heard it on the radio, 40 ppl across NY have swein flu, in the western districts, i think it said one person in each school was digagnosed with the sickness.
-
I believe that this is no joke, but my classmates seem to think it is! While on my college trip, everytime somebody coughed or sneezed they would be like "Oh, looks like he/she caught swine flu." and "He's scared to get up 'cause he knows we're gonna sneeze on his shoes." The most of the time I was worrying about bringing home a disease!
-
I work very closely with the public as well, and there is a bit of concern from all about the disease. I has recently sprung up in both my home town and my town-I-used-to-live-in-but-still-visit town. Both are keeping it kind of low-key, which to me is foolish. But on the same note I refuse to cloister myself away on account of something of this sort.
-
it dosen't matter who's fault it is. determining that won't solve anything at all.
i heard that around here in NY, basically swine flu is no diffrent from the regular flu, you can only tell the diffrence by a blood test, at least up here. people are kinda blowin it out o poportion a bit.
-
Oh joy, more Misanthropic talk...
I am officially out of this discussion.
-
I personally think that the media is blowing this out of proportion. My moms 6th grade class might cancell their yearly trip to NYC because of the swine flu, they went 9 months after 9/11
-
^ agreed. Really, it is just the new thing to live in fear of- thank you very much, media.
-
To be honest I wouldnt be surprised if swine flu isnt exactly new, its probably been around before and didnt get much hype. The problem with all this is that the regular normal flu kills people all the time but schools arent shut down when there is an outbreak of a regular flu. I have the flu right now, not swine flu (or at least I dont think so) since it hasnt gotten to my area yet.
The swine flu is a flu, nothing really special so what if pigs can get it? Really what difference does it make?
-
There is no vaccine for the swine flu but there is for normal influenza. Against influenza, we have a few protective measures. Against the swine flu, we have nothing. It's like how people can get a regular fever but they can also get scarlet fever. Huge difference in the amount of fatalities for those.
-
Yea. I'm not like "OMG! SWINE FLU! :shokced:" But I do understand that its a bit more serious than a regular flu because of the lack of vaccination. I'm not gonna go around wearing a mask, or avoid anyone who sneezes, but I try to wash my hands before I eat or find some hand sanatizer. You know, little things. YOU CAN'T GET IT FROM EATING PORK! grr
-
I'm not worried about the swine flu. But I'm taking better care of my health and try not to spread germs.
-
True Wolfgang. I was just sick on Friday. I had a REALLY high fever, and some strange dreams... Well, what I'm saying is that its horrible to be sick, so people should try to stay well.
-
I hate being sick too, I have a sore throat...but I got it because I ate a whole tin of altoids. :-[
-

Curiously strong mints will do that. X3
-
Once I burned the skin off the roof of my mouth eating those things... x_x
-
EEK!
its in my AREA!! like 20 minutes away :shcoked:
-
Yeah, it's pretty much everywhere.
-
My school hasn't closed down, but we've already have messages sent to our phonez in case we get sick /w flu
-
Well, it's good to hear that there are at least some preventive measures being taken...
-
Albany NY has no comfirmed cases so we're okay for now.
-
eep! county right next to mine has closed the school for a week... my school is NEXT!
-
I wouldn't worry about it too much, just wash your hands after touching someone who looks ill and stay calm, I mean 6 schools in my country have got it and it's spreading...but just keep calm.
(edit: don't know what happened there, mind just went off on one)
-
we should all just chill, in NY the only way to tell swien flu from regular flu is a blood test. the news is just blowing this out of porportion a bit. no one in the US has even died yet have they?
-
there is no death from Swine Flu in the U S for now
but my friend had most of the symptoms, he said if you had it, you were quarantined and the only people who you could see were doctors.
-
...Welp...one of my neighboring schools got closed for a week due to it.......I think we're next...=_
-
Apparently scientists are finding that the swine flu is just as weak as the regular flu unless the teachers at my school are just trying to prevent a panic.
-
Concerning the N1H1 situation, if someone tells you it is ok to not use proper germ protection, they would be wrong, and if someone tells you to grab your NBC gear and pile into the bomb shelter, they would also be wrong. Don't listen to the careless or overdiligent, instead listen to logic and reason. Listen to the World Health Organization. With their help, and your support, we can all hope for a brighter future.
God Bless the W.H.O., God Bless Humanity.

didn you and scyler leave the thread. due to some one saying this was humans fault?
but i do agree some what with you, i mean, even mr president himself didn't say there was cause for panic only for concern. too much caution or too little is very bad. just have a healthy concern of getting sick, don't stress out untill WHO tell's you to (or your local doc or mr obama)
-
There's really no need to panic about the H1N1 because American health services are more than capable of handleing this. The only reason that Mexico had that many deaths is that they don't really get as many vaccinations. AND schools wer closed here, but they reopened because they ssaid that the threat wasn't so great that we stay out of school.

I think that basic hygiene should do the trick, like you said.
Here's a quote I read somewhere, that I found pretty interesting.
''Less than 100 people have the swine flu and everbody's after face masks. Millions of people in the world got AIDS and nobody wants to buy/use condoms.''
Of course, exaggeration's in it, but it does make us think about it. Anyways, either I don't read/watch the news often, but I didn't hear about it for a while... What's new? Deaths or other contaminated areas?
