so far evrey free recorder ive used has had a screen distortion or time limit forcing you to buy the full product
Is there any really any fully "free" recorders out there?
-
None that I'm aware of that's actually fairly good I'm afraid. I've looked for ages and compared different ones, but found none free that pleased me
DXtory is my favorite out of the paid ones, fraps is ok but I don't like their codec and it's pretty intensive on performance (meaning your fps are often halved).
-
ah ok thanks
-
Seriously? Just use Fraps

you only get about 1 minute of recording time...impossible to commentary.

I honestly don't like fraps because it's a major resource hog and literally cuts my fps in half.
That's with 3 hard drives, i7 CPU, a 7970 GPU and 16GB of RAM.
The codec can be quite annoying to work with in 64bit as well, doing some video editing and transcoding kills the quality.
Dxtory is much lighter and works much better imho. The free trial puts a large watermark however in the middle of everything.

I use LiveStream Procaster if anything.
It is for free, and I would suggest setting up a regular LS account, not a new.livestream account.

It's 30 seconds actually, [REMOVED]. When recording videos, I can sync my microphone with the video so I can record as I play. It's pretty sweet, but the file sizes are massive

Not to backseat moderate or anything, but I might mention that I'm fairly sure it's against the forum rules to suggest bad (and especially illegal) behavior.
Anyhow, dxtory does pretty much the same thing. It allows me as well to set up several recording sources for audio and thus records several audio streams.
For example I can record the my own mic, the in-game sound and for example a skype conversation or something at the same time and it's all outputted as individual file streams, so in the video editing software I can just edit them individually. For example I can lower the game sound at a only a single point whilst keeping the other sounds as they are or I can mute my friend who's screaming something whilst I'm trying to say something else.
It also has options for using different codecs and encoders (including 3rd party ones!) with varying compression to either have huge uncompressed files with excellent quality or much smaller files compressed ones with almost as good quality.
You can choose also between different file formats depending on the coded used. For example you can output as .avi or .mp4 or .wmv or whatever else you like.
As for free ones, once again I don't know any I can recommend. I've heard camstudio should be decent and I suppose hypercam (if it's still around) isn't too bad.
The free version of Hypercam I know has a small watermark up in the corner, but it's not too bad and you can kinda bypass it without breaking the law by simply editing cropping it out when editing the video, although you will lose a slight bit or the corner in the recorded video by doing this.
EDIT: It seems like Hypercam 2 has now been made free and the watermark has been removed as version 3 has been released (which is however offered as a free demo with the aforementioned watermark).

Dang. Didn't know syncing a computer mic was illegal. What kind of a world is this?
Bandicam (http://www.bandicam.com/) and Movicam (http://www.movavi.com/game-capture/) are some of my top pics, but here's a lis (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130213214132AAP3r5F)t of some of the freeware stuff to try out. Just make sure you figure out which compression works best for your card and your editor.

*Please keep in mind that discussion of Pirating is against the rules, and also keep in mind that Backseat Moderating is always an offence. What's happened here is borderline, but consider it a warning. Please stay on topic.*

not sure ill check soon.

Just actually thinking about it, it should be possible (with a bit of technical know how) to use VLC to record your desktop...
I say research that option

Im probably gpnna get shot down. But I use screencast-o-matic. I'm not picky
-
Livestream is also a really easy to use screen capture software, you can also bring your friends in on the fun for during captures.
It does use quite a bit of computing resource though, so be prepared for lag if your rigs not up for it!

A lets player recommended Bandicam.
hows that recorder?
-
Honestly, I've never tried it. But I suppose it's worth a try.
I think the best way to find the best one for you is to try out as many ones you can until' you find the one that you feel is the best.
-
All in all, consider buying FRAPS. It's the best of all the one's I've tried and purchased.
The only thing is that it records uncompressed footage and that can require a good SSD. Though in the end, you've got the raw footage and you can compress it to any format you need.
For compression I recommend Handbreak.

I use Bandicam. It's pretty good as far as free recorders go: you can choose to record your whole screen or just a window and you can set the water mark (Which is small and somewhat translucent) so that it's in one of the corners. The only problem I've had with it is that sometimes it will do a strobe effect with the recording where it switching quickly between your desktop and the game, but usually it's fine.

As stated earlier, I'm really not that keen on it. I have 2 SSD's, one 256GB as primary drive and one 128GB for games and other data plus a 1TB hard drive for backups and yet more storage and it still cripples my performance significantly in certain games.
On top of that.. from my experience, rendering it out using just about any video editing software destroys the image quality unless have very low compression levels (which instead yields huge files). It seems like their codec is pretty bad to work with.

All about the settings you use :P

Thing is, there's not much in fraps that can be changed. Recording full size (1080p) at 30fps makes my games run at around 35fps which is really choppy and imho unplayable. Recording at 60fps drops my framerates from 60-70+fps in the games I've tested to around 40-45 which still looks choppy and is very hard to play with.
Enabling lossless RGB mode is even worse.
On top of this, after I edit the video, the finished video after editing in Sony Vegas is much darker than it should no matter what I do.
Out of all the recorders I've tried, Fraps is the only one that has these issues where dxtory is near flawless and offers much more choices for codecs and recording quality (such as lossy or lossless compression). The lagarith codec is amazing! Smaller files than fraps produces and better image quality!

I get what you're saying about the frame rates, but thats because it needa to record at a constant rate or at certain points it'll speed up or slow down in playback. For referance a standard film plays at aprx 24 frames a second. But then whatever works for you :P
