Title: Forum changes
Post by: Tweak on July 13, 2009, 07:45:58 PM
Ok, so I'm a little excited!

Myself and WingedZephyr have been plotting >.>

As was announced, the winning banner would be used on the new website and forums. The original idea was to redo the website, rewrite the information and them create a forum skin to match, but with limited time and indeed lack of funds (meaning I have to squeeze this in where I can) we've decided on a new plan.

The forums are the most stable area of the system, so why not make use of their stability, coding and security features? With that in mind we decided to merge the website and forums into a single system, the forums will change a little in appearance (although not significantly, bar the colour scheme updates) and a website will be incorporated into the forums.

We also have some plans for other areas of change and these are going to be released in a single release hopefully within the next couple of days, expect things to look different but the standard layout will remain much the same, during this time please report ANY bugs to our bugs board and we will deal with them.

During this time the forums may intermittently be unavailable as things are changed, IRC will remain online as usual should any wish to chat. Those preferring the old colour scheme (the current one) will still be able to choose it if so wanted.

Thank you for your patience and your usage of the forums, please make any bug reports or suggestions to the relevant boards.

And as you can see the changes are mostly in place.

The website area is still being setup perfectly so expect this to change during the next couple of hours.

The skin has been updated to WingedZephyr's and the smilies were also redone by her. There are 4 new smiley sets - Foxes, Cats, Wolves and Dragons, the others will be made available later.

I hope you like it :)

The colors are a nice change, but frankly the new layout is terrible. It looks more like a personal blog than a forum.

Is there an option to change it back in my profile?
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: WingedZephyr on July 14, 2009, 02:50:10 AM
If you click the tab that says "Forum" at the top of the screen, it's essentially the same thing as the old layout. It's a different link, too, so if you have FF bookmarked somewhere, you can just change the link of the bookmark to open to the forums straight away.

The website area is still being setup perfectly so expect this to change during the next couple of hours.

Had you also paid attention to my post you would have seen the above. The forums now have all panels removed so it looks like it did before. Calling my work terrible after myself and WingedZephyr have spent the last 3 hours working on this is harsh and upsetting. We're doing this in our free time, I worked on this over a paid project of mine.

Post Merge: July 14, 2009, 02:57:02 AM
Whoops, correction on my previous time frame, more like 9 hours.

i like the work that you have done.. but it's slightly harder for me to focus on what I'm looking at.. perhaps its just me. I also miss the old smileys. Other than that.. I like the banner at the top and the colouring. It's nice to see something new.

The old smilies will likely return later on, all other smilies sets have now been opened, they are available in your profile, under Look and Layout preferences.

I'm sorry if I just insulted you two on a personal level for giving my critique on the layout.

Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Asia Kali Yusufzai on July 14, 2009, 03:07:32 AM
i quite like the layout, though the look is a bit too startling, but that's probably because of the contrast from the last one.

The smileys are good, cus now they're not rather rough and buggy. but these are a bit small and some of them are hard to decipher.

That's a preview image of all four species of the new smiley sets... All drawn from scratch by me. Some of them are easier to see than others, such as the cats, so if that's an issue, you're free to change to whichever one you think looks better. As Tweak said, all you have to do is go to Profile > Look and Layout Preferences > Current Smiley Set.

And remember this isn't necessarily the end of the forum changes.

I have said it twice now, it is quite likely.

We're current;y in the process of lightening the darker areas of the theme to reduce the "glare" and "brightness" from it.

Victoria, while your input is very much appreciated, it isn't necessary to reply to every single post in the thread. Please try to condense your thoughts into a smaller amount of replies.

Also, Tweak has already stated that other themes will open up later... Please let us finish our work on the current one.

I don't really see what everyone's complaining about, I think everything's kinda good if i'm honest.

I kinda think its a little blunt to say you like the old smileys better, because WZ made those new smileys herself, so maybe people should be a bit more considerate!

Sorry, I don't mean to be all critical of people's comments but still  :S

Good job Tweak and Winged Zephr :)

Indeed, the new look/layout looks great. the new look might bring in some new members as well...or make current members become more active.

and I like the new smilies.. they don't over power your post like the older ones did...these new ones are smaller and look nicer and i'm sure the other ones to come out will be just as good as these new ones..

Great job you two. Nice work  :3

Apologies for any slowdown in service over the past hour, I was building a database index to speed up searching. It took an hour and a lot of grunt to generate but now it's done, any searches done should be considerable faster.

Also a nice 100+MB to a whopping 400+MB in database space due to it!

Hi all,

Apologies for the downtime experienced earlier, during the course of routine maintenance it was discovered that one of the tables in the database had become corrupted, this then resulted in various errors appearing through out thee forums.

The backup from only a few hours ago was downloaded, extracted and the relevant piece of data removed and replaced within the database, data loss, if at all, is minimal.

Any issues please post in the bug report board, both myself and WingedZephyr will be unavailable for the next few hours as we both desperately require sleep, WZ has classes in 4 hours and I, myself, am very unwell.

I try to keep my health in check.

Last night I managed to get 5 hours sleep, which makes a total of about 12 hours sleep in the past 94 hours. I think I'll be making that up over the weekend.

Everything seems stable though, any problems, please report them.

As many of you will have noticed the frontpage of the forums has changed slightly. This is due to an upgrade to the portal system we use.

Unfortunately, however, it appears there are a number of bugs both within the system and the upgrade. These will be fully investigated and remedied tomorrow once I've slept.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Changed the report to moderator links to buttons.

Report to Moderator in a post is the quickest way to report something you wish to flag up, including if you want a thread deleted or double post removed, it'll directly contact the relevant moderators to ensure a quick response.

Report to Moderator with PMs will send to Zeph or myself (or both) and can be used to report any offensive messages or problems you receive so we can investigate.

For those who haven't noticed some changes recently:

* Profiles can now be reported to the staff
* Some more things that I can't remember because I do too much

Additionally our report system has been altered to send all reports to a board that only staff can see. This allows a higher number of staff members to deal with a specific warning much quicker.

This system will also mark a reported post so that multiple reports will happen less frequently, this text will also change colour depending on whether we have solved the report or not.

Some changes are still to be made but the portal is back online.

It was discovered that the old portal system was being run insecurely by the creators, we take security very seriously here and as a result have switched over to a new system. As it so happens, this system sports a few new features and an improved shoutbox.

The data stored on the old portal will be migrated where possible.

The navigation bar was getting cluttered and it was decided to cut out a few modifications and consolidate them. This not only improves performance but will speed up work as I know the code better.

Expect more changes over the coming months both here and on IRC, although it'll take some time, Zeph and I have some BIG plans in the work. A few people know a bit more (advantage of being in IRC, I randomly tell people things) but for now we're keeping quiet!

The Suggestions section of the forum has been entirely reorganized to work better with the addition of the new Helpdesk.

All of the old boards in there have been removed and replaced with direct links to the appropriate Departments of the Helpdesk. I did my best to ensure that any discussions still open in any of the old boards were transferred over to the Helpdesk as tickets.

Hopefully this will make things a bit easier to use and understand for everyone.

+ On upgrade the search daemon was changed to a faster service.
+ Forum language files have been updated to UTF-8 and the database has been converted. This allows better special character compatibility whilst reducing the database size.

Some images on the site aren't loading now. I'll go make a ticket.

EDIT: Nevermind, I did some looking around and it doesn't seem to be that big of a problem.

Also what's the point of having foreign special characters if the forum language is English?
Title: Re: Forum changes

Most likely due to the change to UTF-8, some of the images get redone. Once I've seen your ticket I'll sort it out.

! Trialling a new ad placement after the last post on a thread.

This trial will last for 7 days to see if the ad placement provides a viable income source. The next few months are the last that I can guarantee being able to pay the cost out of pocket and without additional support financially the forums may be forced to downsize or even close.

If the bills aren't covered in some way, then this may be the only option. I don't want to do it but for the first time since I started fully supporting the forums I am very concerned. Money is going to become very tight and I will not have the cash to pay for it any longer.

Also what's the point of having foreign special characters if the forum language is English?

It also supports such things as copyright symbols etc directly, rather than forcing a conversion which uses more space. Everything you see when reading is stored like that in the database rather than taking up to 5 times the space for a special character.
Title: Re: Forum changes

would clicking on the ads help make more money?
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Tweak on September 28, 2011, 03:05:44 PM
The only way money is made from the ads is by clicking them.

However, it is against the Terms of Service of the Advertising company for me to ask for clicks or for people to click them repeatedly and will result in my account being terminated, losing all current and future payments.

If an ad interests you then feel free to click it as it will also benefit the forum. If you happen to find an ad which "interests" you daily then click them, but I'm not allowed to ask you to click them.

Unfortunately the ad account has been disabled.

At this time an appeal is pending but in the event it is unsuccessful all revenue will be lost (I had enough to cover a month's fees in there).

I will keep you updated.

To keep you updated.

At present no answer has been received regarding the appeal, we are still awaiting this.

However, I would like to organise a mass donation attempt. I have some ideas in action but they need significant funding to secure. Please donate all you can over the two months, ignoring the donation meter. During this time, raffle tickets will be worth double their previous amounts and the person able to donate the most by the middle of December will be given a special prize.

Please be aware without your help the forums will have difficulty continuing to run. I have no intention at this point to close them and will give at least a month's warning in the event it does have to occur. But with your help, we can keep them going. I just need support from everybody here.

Thank you

Edit: Donations above that of the donation limits are fine, please contact me if you wish to make one.

I no longer have any income. I'm currently unemployed. I was keeping it running on student loans whilst I was studying but now, as I'm no longer a student I have nothing but unemployment benefit coming in.

Equally, I will soon be moving over to the USA which will cut any income I have off entirely, that's when there will be absolutely no money left to pay for it but I'd rather secure something now than fight for it in 2-3 months when I'm trying to focus on other things.

The profile field options for "Parents", "Siblings", and "Children" have been removed. Two new profile field options have been added: "Avatar made by" and "Signature image(s) made by", to be used for crediting artists for artwork in your profile.

These new profile fields will appear above your signature. I currently have them in use, so you can see what it looks like.

Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: WingedZephyr on October 19, 2011, 11:43:20 PM
A number of reasons. The original reason they were first added into the forum has long since not been applicable to the current community; they seemed to be the least widely used or essential profile options; a lot of new members over the years have been confused about their purpose or meaning; the list for profile options has been getting long and cluttered... etc. etc.

We do realize that some members may have used them, and we're sorry if it's an inconvenience for you, but we believed the benefits outweighed the drawbacks overall.

My appeal was denied and the ad account is unlikely to be reinstated and all revenue made and that hadn't yet been paid out has been lost. I have contacted them further but it seems highly likely that this will be the final decision.

Unfortunately whilst that allows us to return to the forum with no adverts, we're now more reliant on your donations. Please keep them coming in.

Tomorrow morning (around 10am GMT) the forums will be taken offline temporarily to allow for an upgrade to our portal software.

The new features include:

Quote
Two new positions for blocks: header and footer.
Revamped permission system with the ability to deny permissions.
Complex display options using PHP expressions for block display.
Implemented basic flood protection for shoutbox.
    Introduced group based shoutbox moderators.
Added ability to prune shoutboxes with various options.
Links posted to shoutbox are now shortened.
Added ability to whisper (post private shouts) in shoutbox.
Better handling of ignored users in shoutbox.
Brand new RSS Feed block with a better parser.
Allow selecting blocks (not) to show in pages on page add/edit.
Allow overriding block titles using language strings.

And bug fixes include:

Quote
    SMF 2.0.1 and 1.1.15 compatibility.
    Improved compatibility with other mods.
    Improved Right-To-Left languages support.
Several fixes to package database functions.
Custom theme friendly fix for broken headers.
Unescaped entities in shout dates could break shoutbox.
cutoff tag was displayed when it shouldn't be.
    max-height failed on older browsers.
Copyright was misaligned due to recent changes in SMF.
    Fixed MySQL 5.5+ compatibility.
Board news pagination link was sometimes broken.
Applied board permissions to the article management area.

Usually a modification upgrade can be done without you noticing but as the Portal is so deeply interconnected with the forums and we have multiple modifications some of these changes will need to be made manually. We apologise for this inconvenience.

This should only take 5-10 minutes to complete.

You could work more on donation drives. Maybe set up a sort of fun-raiser, have people willing to donate.

A really good system to use is have a level of degree for donators.
The system my clan uses is this:

Donations are not reset, once you have donated those donations are added to your tally for life.
$5+ = Get a donator rank, get two permissions on the TF2 server, get your name mentioned on the front page and in a sticky post.
$20+ = Get a donator+ Rank, get six permissions on the TF2 server and some permissions on Gmod.
$50+ = Get sponsor rank, get 10 permissions on TF2 server and more on Gmod.

I realize you don't have game servers, so the permissions will have to work a different way, but having different ranks for different donators depending on how much they pay can be a good incentive.

Also, when someone donates and you do get a sizable donation, publicly thanking the donators can make other people feel more inclined to donate so they get thanked as well. Having a sticky thread of all the people who have donated and how much they've donated (ranked most being on top) can also be very helpful.

I also think being more public about the raffle would be a good idea. Maybe put something about it on the front page? Another thing is, if you are actually in financial trouble, doing a public post that you need donations, although is a bit iffy (as in yes, it does make you feel bad) but it will get you a few donations.

My clan does it and we've made over $450 in the last 3 months, purely in donations.

Also an idea we will be implementing to the clan soon is forum achievements, you get achievements for posting x amount, going to x boards, being online x amount of times, posting secret messages and donating :P. We haven't implemented it (or made it yet, we're going to use an original program made by our web development team) but it should be good, increase activity and donations for those who want all the achievements.
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Beatnory on August 17, 2012, 10:22:42 AM
sorry anoni but if you donate something you do this becouse you want to help Tweak and this forum and not becouse you want to have a higer rank.
this way you make people how have money more important then people how don't have (much) money.
the hole fandom is about respect each diffrent and being yourself.

I am a supporter that donors have more rights. but not that they are made publibelijk important.
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: anoni on August 17, 2012, 12:44:27 PM
Unfortunately Beatnory, I don't think TFF is getting enough donations because of that. The donations are because Tweak is running out of money and if he runs out of money we will have to find someone else to run the site or, dare I say, the site will go down.

I think in times like this, when the actual fate of TFF is at stake, doing what I suggested would be the best way to get more donations. It's not bad, your not charging people to do services that they could normally do for free and your not forcing anyone to pay anything. You're just encouraging more donations, not because we want more money, but because the server needs more money to be up.
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Beatnory on August 17, 2012, 12:50:58 PM
it sure will works. it's more how. you put people under social pressure to donate. it makes people unhappy.
but I understand that there is no other choose. I'm against it but I won't complain when there will come so system.

One thing. I would be happy if there is also a possibility to donate without to be a part of this system.

Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Otebon Albrecht on August 17, 2012, 01:35:35 PM
In a way, you are both right.

Donators should offer their hard-earned money because they feel it is a good thing to do, but some do it for the perks associated with being a donator. The way I understand it works now is that if you donate at all you receive "Donator" status which changes your profile name's color to purple (assuming you aren't part of staff), turns your paw prints purple and gives you one to show that you are "Rank 1" of the Forum, gives you a few added features like the ability to save your posts to draft and play more games in the Arcade, enters your name into the monthly raffle (which is linked to on the Portal Page in the top three posts when it's updated), and writes your name in a Donator Page that I've forgotten where it is (>_>).

When you donate, however, you don't (by any means) HAVE to have your name proclaimed for the world to see as you can have it all appear as Anonymous (Tweak and WZ can still see your name as they still enter you into the raffle and give you the donator perks).

I could be wrong and I encourage people to do their research and double check me, but that's how the system works as I understand it currently.

I guess the thing of it is, when people do something nice and they see that others know it, that encourages them to do it. When I was learning to become an instructor for martial arts, my Master told me to "Punish in private. Praise in public." What he meant was that if someone does something that you have to punish, don't chew them out in front of everyone as that is overly embarrassing. But if they do something worthy of praise, tell them in front of others. It gives everyone around the notice that such-and-such a behavior is acceptable (and worthy of praise) as well as gives the person receiving the praise that little added boost as they know that they did well, and so does everyone else.

I'm a big fan of Donator Perks as I find it follows that system.

In other news, I'm free to help raise money for the form Tweak. Although I may not really have any ideas worthwhile (I guess I could do a fundraising project like Puncia did... but I'm worthless for designing avatars. Perhaps I could do story commissions for charity?) I'm available to help if you give me a job to do.
Title: Re: Forum changes
Post by: Timmy Fox on August 17, 2012, 05:34:51 PM
I'm okay with the donator drives stuff until' it comes to the point of "pay this and get this awesome thing". I mean more, sure donating your hard earned money is of course something to be encouraged and being featured as a donator is nice, but when it becomes a "donate to get more content!" as in "donate to access these boards!" or "donate to get these much better privileges!" is where I'd cross my line. Being an underage student and quite broke, I swear, if I had the money I would donate a LOT to this forum, but I barely have $10 for myself currently and much less have I been able to use paypal (I just were able to get it few months ago). I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation and while I wouldn't mind to see people donating and getting nice thank yous for that, from my perspective it's less fun to see those that are able to donate get better things and priveliges because they donated.

The forums won't become like that if I can help it. I prefer to provide them for free. In the current circumstances I just do not have the needed funds to secure the hardware for another year.

It's likely any fundraisers etc we run will lead to benefit everyone here. ;)

I don't mind the small bonuses donators get, they're well deserved but nothing users can't go without and still enjoy the forum fully. Many online games have burned themselves on being free to play and then forcing users to pay in order to get the full gaming experience. I'm glad Tweak has a higher standard.

isn't is better to use a cheap hosting. I don't know what what the requirements for the hardware. but this way it can be cheaper.

As I've probably told you before, if you need anything to lean on server-wise, I'm more than happy to let you host the forums and IRC on my dedi if anything happens. I'm sure it could handle it. You know this, anyway!~ I've told you probably millions of times I'm always happy to help some way or another. Especially since I haven't donated (yet!)

I'm sure the problem with hosting the server on your dedicated is (unless you're renting it from an external company) it's based in Australia. As a minority of server members live in Australia, it would mean, generally, worse connection for a majority of the forum.

That and security, but I do agree, I still think in desperate times like these, we should think about using a cheaper method of server hosting.
