Title: Weapons and fanboyism/misinformation
Post by: Beta8088_Proto on June 05, 2018, 10:18:25 PM
Yes, I take interest in weapons. But something that really annoys me is when people start going "X IS BETTER THAN Y AND Y IS TOTAL GARBAGE WHILE X COULD CUT THROUGH SPACE-TIME ITSELF!!!11!1!!!!ONEELEVEN!1!!" or when a politician goes on about "fully semi-automatic heat-seeking ghost guns that fire 9,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 rounds a second from 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999-round magazines".

My thoughts are, can't we just have a reasonable discussion with facts and not "X sux get y" 'No u"?

I lean towards AK-pattern rifles over the M-16 family of rifles as a personal taste. However, I will not say the M-16 family are terrible rifles. AK's have a larger round and have more stopping power, but 5.56mm has lighter recoil and is better at wounding. AK's are nose-in, rock-back mags and AR's are straight insert. AK's have a 600RPM fire rate whereas AR's range from 700-900. Does that mean one is better? No. It just means they're good at different tasks.

Same with hand-to-hand weapons and tools. A sword isn't neccesarily better as a weapon than a claw-hammer. It all depends on context.

Sorry if this is something no-one wanted to hear about, but I felt like sharing my thoughts. Let me know what you think.

I'm not interested in guns myself, and know very little about them. Pre-gunpowder weapons on the other hand are very much my bag. I have a feeling you'd enjoy Schola Gladiatoria (https://www.youtube.com/user/scholagladiatoria) on YouTube, if you're not watching him already. "Context" may be his favorite word.

Yes, I very much enjoy Matt's content, and he does make some fair points.

Ow, yees! The ever so glorious myths and oddities about firearms!

My favourite one is how Hollywood guns always shoot the entire cartridge instead of just the bullet...

Yeah, the cartridge animations are pretty annoying. Personally I like the mechanisms of airsoft guns as much as the real versions. It's a fun activity with its own set of weapon myths.

I can relate to that...

I'm really interested in the technology behind accurately chucking a projectile from A to B, but I'm not interested in killing anyone. Therefore I find my airsoft guns just as interesting to tinker with than any real firearm.

Another little myth there is that anyone that owns a gun is some sort of hatefull person that wants to kill people. But personally, I've seen that the majority of people just like the technology behind them.

I guess if you think about it, guns are designed to work in simple and efficient ways. They're relatively easy to take apart, and their parts are essentially designed to just be capable of being jammed together and work, meaning that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to tinker with one, meaning they're pretty fun things to play with for tech minded people...

Totally! And in Canada knife laws and gun laws seem to be obsessed with arbitrary things most of the time. For example, flails with spiked balls? Illegal. Fishing weight stapled to a stick, making the same item? Legal. Two wrenches and a caribiner? Legal. Put them together? Illegal because Nunchaku.

...Wat?

Here in Australia, we have a political group who, if it were possible, would lose many of the court cases around the world, they are that dumb and stupid. Enter the Greens.

They keep saying that guns kill people everyday here, well we die to idiot drivers/drunk driving more then guns.

Anyway, I love guns, even going to join the army for a gap year next year.

I'm fine with you guys discussing this as a hobby, but please do not turn it into a debate about political parties or gun rights.

I prefer knives and it annoys me when someone on the internet is like "omg bro it sucks because you didn't spend a fortune on it and it isn't made out of the best material this world has to offer. Trust me bro, I'm a knife specialist dooood".
Who gives a shit? It does the job and it looks cool, I'm not going to fight professional soldiers with it.

I swear I see that only on the internet, everyone in real life is like "k cool". Yea, I'm going to spend 9384723 million bucks on a machete made out of space alien titanium just to cut some bushes or whatever.
