Title: John Red Beard's AMA
Post by: John Red Beard on September 27, 2017, 06:18:38 PM
Ask me stuff, and I'll answer! (As long as it's, like, super-duper personal or whatnot) I might even ask some questions back.

I don't know you very well so why not get to know you better ^^

Why did you join the furry fandom and how you found out about it?

Why did you start drawing?

I think I first became part of the fandom when I joined the VCL gallery/forum just... so so many years ago. I don't know exactly why I gravitated to it, except that I've always liked cartoon animals and monsters. Disney's Robin Hood, Lion King, Gargoyles, and the like. I also like sword & sorcery fantasy, like D&D and Lord of the Rings, and while that genre isn't inherently furry-related, they do mesh well together, IMO.

I have no idea why I started drawing, because I've been doing it as long as I can remember. It's some of my earliest memories.

Do you play videogames? If yes what's your favorite?

I used to play a LOT of games. I was a Sega fanboy before transitioning to Playstation. Not so much anymore, partly because I don't have as much free time and partly because I'm not interested in competitive online play, which is what most top-tier games seem to be focused on these days.

I think the last big game that I played all the way through was Batman Arkham Asylum, and I loved it. I started Arkham City but never finished it. Lately I've mostly been playing Minecraft (mobile edition).

What was the first sona that you drew?

I've drawn tons of characters that were supposed to be me in some fictional universe or other, superheroes, ninjas, power rangers, D&D characters, that sort of thing. But Tsaenoa here was my first fursona. He didn't have a name back then though.

How did you come up with the name?
Title: Re: John Red Beard's AMA
Post by: John Red Beard on September 29, 2017, 12:12:48 AM
It's from one of the languages I invented/am inventing. It means "brother bird-of-prey," which was meant as a rough translation of JohnRaptor, a screen name I use sometimes.

Bonus fact: Daome means "girlfriend," or more precisely, "a girl or woman who loves or is loved romantically."

What languages do you speak?
Title: Re: John Red Beard's AMA
Post by: John Red Beard on September 29, 2017, 12:57:38 PM
Sadly, I only speak English. I'm fascinated by language and I'll ramble on and on about the history and technical structure of languages if you let me, but English is the only one I can actually use and understand.  :'(

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, but came away hardly knowing anything.

I'm trying to learn Irish with the help of the app Duolingo.

Have you seen any progress with Duolingo? (I am interested in this app myself too but I don't know if I should get invested for nothing >W< )

Aaaand what are your top 3 favorite languages?
Title: Re: John Red Beard's AMA
Post by: John Red Beard on September 29, 2017, 02:25:37 PM
Hard to say, because I haven't been using it that long and there aren't a lot of places to use or test one's knowledge of the Irish language. I did get the phrase "tá moncaí agam" (I have a monkey) stuck in my head though. XD But the app is free and only takes about 10 minutes a day, so I say give it a try. What language are you thinking of trying to learn?

Three favorite languages? Let's see... Irish, Middle English, and Dothraki. ;)

I wanna learn Japanese. They added it recently so I was really intrigued.

Would you ever want to have a job that has to do with languages? Like a translator?

Opinion on Western-Europe?
Generally positive. I want to visit some time, especially Ireland and Scotland. Or really anywhere with cool historical stuff to look at.

There's a lot of languages I'd like to learn if I had all the time in the world. Japanese is one.

I've considered looking into working in linguistics in some way, but I couldn't afford the time and money it would take to get the education I'd need. Plus art is my number 1 passion.

What type of art do you hate?
Interesting question. I had to think about it for a bit. I suppose that although I appreciate its place in art history, and I don't hate all of it (some of it is really good), I find a lot of modern/postmodern fine art to be pretentious nonsense. There's an episode of Adam Ruins Everything that highlights a lot of what's wrong with the fine art world.

Do you feel you are generally happy?
Not at all.  XD Don't mean to be a downer, but I suffer from depression with a side of anxiety.

Do you believe in the supernatural?

What is your favourite Irish Mythe?
I'm pretty interested in stories of changelings, largely because of one of my favorite songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2DcrSGl9E8).

Do you believe in the supernatural?
I've been doing a lot of thinking about the word "supernatural" lately, and ultimately I think it's not a very useful word, because if there are things that can't be explained by our current understanding of science, that just means that our understanding is incomplete. Plus, even if it were proven that ghosts existed, for example, that wouldn't prove the existence of ESP, angels, fairies, or anything else. So the way I see it, it's not a matter of whether or not the supernatural, as a whole category of things, exists, but whether each particular phenomenon exists.

Specifically, I don't believe in any of the phenomena currently considered supernatural, but I'm open to the possibility. Actually, I do believe in the cluster of phenomena known as hauntings, but I'm not convinced that they're caused by spirits of the dead.

Really interesting opinions ^^

What's your favorite science and why? I.e Maths, Physics etc.

I suppose I like physics because in a lot of ways it's easier for me to understand than other fields, but it also has mind blowing trippy stuff like relativity and quantum mechanics.

Quantum mechanics are interesting ^^

What do you think about quantum computers?

What do you like most about yourself?
That's a tough one. I guess I like that I'm pretty smart, even though I'm not smart enough to really DO anything useful with it. Or maybe it's just that my emotional issue get in the way.

Quantum mechanics are interesting ^^

What do you think about quantum computers?
They can't get here fast enough. XD I don't know how much of what I've heard and read about them is true and how much is wild speculation, but it seems like they have a lot of potential for faster processing and increased data storage.

I love how welcoming, accepting, and civil everyone has been. Honestly, there's nothing I hate. But if I had to pick something, it's that it uses light type on a dark background, which is harder on the eyes than dark text on a light background.

Favorite film adaptation is an easy one: Lord of the Rings

Favorite book series, I'm going to give an unconventional answer, because it's non-fiction: the Scott McCloud comics series, Understanding Comics, Making Comics, and Reinventing Comics.

What is the most dangerous thing that you have ever done?
Title: Re: John Red Beard's AMA

When I was a teenager, I once rode in the back of a pickup truck with my friends, while my friend's older brother drove at up to 100 mph, weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway. Never told my parents because they would have flipped out.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Let’s see, I was very proud of my brown belt in karate, although I always regretted not staying with it a little longer and getting my black belt.

I’m also super proud of the sword-designing contest I won. It was run by a sword-making company and voted on members of a sword enthusiast forum. I’m so proud of it in fact that it’s the sword my fursona has in my avatar.

This month has been pretty good, as months go. I've made progress on a few creative projects, and Stranger Things season 2 comes out tomorrow, so that's a big plus.

What was the most traumatic thing you saw on TV as a child?
Title: Re: John Red Beard's AMA

I don't remember if I first saw this on TV or in the theaters, but I do know I was too young for Robocop. As much as I liked it, there were a few scenes that scared and upset me more than I realized at the time.

A good meal usually does the trick. Also, being productive. I feel satisfied when I’ve had a productive day at work, or when I’ve finished or made good progress on an art project.
