Most of these are sleep based... (I like knowing sleepy stuff)
DID YOU KNOW....
-We dream 1,600 times per year?
-Keith Richards, Guitarist for the Rolling Stones, dreamed up the music for the song "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction?"
-When we dream, our brain works like a computer. They consider what are choices are in life and organize messages to broadcast only when we dream.
-Napolean Bonaparte would wake up at 3am and demand his secretary write out all of his thoughts.
-The loudest snore registered 90 decibels.
-Humans smell up to 10,000 different odors.
-Most of us need 2,000 words to communicate.
-Babies have more bones than adults.
-The average brain weighs about 3lbs.
-There are 72 letters in the Cambodian alphabet.
-5,000 languages have been identified on Earth.
-We have 5 stages of sleep.
-In Rome, soldiers ate garlic because they believed it gave them special strength.
-20 million pounds of garlic is grown and consumed each year.
-The largest tomato that ever weighed was four and a half pounds.
(hehe. I like "did you know's?")

Some weird (but real) Museums:
-The U.S. National Tick collection (contains about 1 million dead ticks... Ick!) in Statesboro, Georgia.
-The Frog Fantasies Museum in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
-The American Sanitary Plumbing Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
-The Crayola Hall of Fame in Easton, Pennsylvania.
-The Museum of Questionable Medical Devices in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
-Marvin Johnson's Gourd Museum in Fuguay-Varina, North Carolina.
-The Tooth Fairy Museum in Deerfield, Illinois.
-The Church of One Tree Museum (a church made out of a single redwood tree that stands about 275 feet tall) in Santa Rosa, California.
-The Combat Cockroach Hall of Fame in Plano, Texas. <--That's my favorite! Hehe!

How about some animal facts?

There are only three animals with blue tongues: the black bear, the Chow Chow dog and the blue-tongued lizard.

Camels have three eye lids.

Flying squirrels don’t really fly, they glide from branch to branch. A blanket-like furry skin stretches their front and hind legs, and acts as a parachute, enabling the squirrel to soar like a kite.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.

No two zebras have the same striped pattern.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

A beaver can hold it's breath for 45 minutes.

Toucans are found only in tropical areas of Central and South America. Some Toucan species have bills more than half as long as their bodies.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards.

The longest recorded life span of a tapeworm was 35 years!

Roadrunners are large (about two feet long) crested birds that prefer to run rather than fly. They eat rattlesnakes whole, and they can sprint 15 miles per hour.

A purple finch is really crimson in color.

You're 20 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bit by a rattlesnake.

A male Angler fish attaches itself to a female and never lets go. Their vascular systems unite and the male becomes entirely dependent on the female's blood for nutrition.

Bengal tigers are the most water loving of the big cats. They will even chase prey into the water.

Read this: http://www.colba.net/~tempest/Draconology/

I found it a few years ago. It's because of this that I believe that they were real.

Actually, I believe dragons were/are real.
How do explain that there is a dragon in every culture?
Cultures across the world were isolated in development.
There's no WAY that a person in each culture could think up the exact same creature.
They had to have had live accounts of the creature.

Well... I actually wouldn't know if it hurts, seeing how I'm female; but from what I understand getting kicked in the nuts hurts, so I'd imagine them geting eaten off would be excrutiating pain.
Title: Re: Random "Did you know...?"s
Post by: tweak on January 04, 2007, 12:25:24 PM
I'm male so I can tell you it hurts.

However being female doesn't stop you realising how much it hurts, if you get kicked in the groin it hurts just as much as it does for a male, many people don't seem to realise this.

I'm not too sure that about the squirrels is true though, squirrels are playful creatures among their own species and with the claws they have, it seems doubtful that they would have to remove another squirrels testicles to invoke pain.

I have been kicked in the groin really hard before (I take karate and when you fight novice belts, you get used to below the belt shots.)... It doesn't really hurt. At least not as much as getting punched in the chest for us women. I had to buy turtle shells to protect my... chest area.

Fossil farts are  extremely rare, but they have recently been discovered to exist by
University   of Massachusetts at Amherst biologist  Lynn Margulis and her
colleagues.  The scientists had noticed that fossils of a particular species
of termite,  trapped in amber, were always accompanied by bubbles of gas.
The scientists  drilled into the trapped bubbles and analyzed the gases inside,
and found  them to be rich in methane and carbon dioxide. They had also found
gut microbes  fossilized within the termites' intestines. Their hypothesis
is that the microbes continued to live and digest the termite's last meal,
even after the termite had been trapped in tree sap and died. These intestinal
gases then seeped out of the termite, forming bubbles in the sap. Eventually
the sap hardened into amber, containing fossil termites, fossil microbes,
and fossil farts.

I will never look at that pretty, sparkly amber the same again. :(

Did you know that there's an animal that looks like a zebra but is actually the only living relative of a giraffe? It's called and Okapi.
Did you know that since Okapis like to keep themselves clean, zoo keepers oftentimes put medicine on a sick okapis back so that it will lick it off?
Did you know that Okapis can reach behind their ears with their tounge?
Did you know that white bengal tigers eat the equivalent of 3,000 McDonald's Big Macs a day?

okapi: (http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c74/Twilight_Knight/okapi.jpg) lol, sorry, i'm an animal geek. I used to play Zoo Tycoon nonstop and i learned a lot from that game. I wish i didn't lose the disks! T^T
