Title: What is an Adopt?
Post by: Ori on July 14, 2016, 12:08:44 AM
So I've been looking around on Deviant Art and I see some of my friends making these things called 'adopts' and I was wondering what the heck is that? I understand that basically people buy/make/trade/sell adopts, and adopts are generally cute animals or chibi people. But what do you  do once you get one? Is it your OC or what?

Adopts are characters (human, animals, or creatures) created by the artists.
Once you bought an adopt it's now considered yours and only yours (of course if people ask about your character, give credit to the artist). You can sometimes name, or choose the gender of the adopt. Also can pick the personality, Make or commission art of your newly adopted character.
Hope this helps out.

I see people mentioning adoptables are creations you buy. While this is very common practise, adoptables can also be given away for free. You literally 'adopt' a character.

So in plain laymen's terms, an adoptable is: A character design you wouldn't have made, but someone else made. However, you own the rights to that character.

But, if you -for example- only have artwork of that character from the person who created said character, you can only mention that the character is yours, but the artwork and design is theirs.

The character is your own, and you can use that character as you do when you make your own entirely. But the design -and any artwork- the original designer makes is not 'yours'. Just the character.

Makes sense?
