Title: John Red Beard's Art Thread
Post by: John Red Beard on July 10, 2016, 04:18:06 AM
Here's my art thread. Let's start with the portraits of my two fursonas I just finished. The male is named Tsainoa. He's the older brother (by about 10 minutes). He's a romantic and an idealist, but also quite anxious. The female is Daome. She's creative and intelligent, but depressive.

P.S. Sorry to the mods if I accidentally made two threads.

Here's a few Zootopia pics I drew recently, starting with a silly little comic strip.

I recently re-read a very short-lived webcomic I did several years ago. The story was simple and the art was primitive, but I realized that I still love the characters. In my head they had lives and personalities far beyond what got portrayed in the comic, and I kinda want to do more with them.

This brother and sister Nick and Iffy O'Hare, the main characters.

This is Allistair Furlong, a character I've had in mind for a long time, but haven't drawn him until now. I was inspired to finally do so thanks to an episode of Stuff You Missed In History Class that featured a story about a real-life badger digging up some artifacts that archaeologists might not have found otherwise.

Title: Re: John Red Beard's Art Thread
Post by: John Red Beard on May 15, 2017, 05:18:52 AM
No secret per se, more like a lot of little tricks and techniques that each help a bit. It has a lot to do with getting to know whatever program(s) you're using, learning what the tools can and can't do and how to use them to their best effect.

I got a book about speed painting for Christmas. I've learned a few things from that, but overall it's not nearly as helpful as I was hoping, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I see a B-25J 1, I'm happy.

Maybe on Laudine you could try raising the eyebrows a little?

I can't put my finger on it, but for some reason she just looks about 50 - 60 years older to me.

My only guess is that the eyebrows need some sorta change. It's the only thing I can find that could be suggestive towards an older age on her art.

In the first picture I drew of her, I didn't do a great job on shading her hair and it looked like she was going gray. I figured that was what did it. Plus, I'm sure her granny glasses don't help, but they're part of her awkward charm (IMO).

Here are portraits of my two fursonas, Tsaenoa and Daome. I changed the way I draw them a little to make them look more lion-ish.

Foxes. They're red foxes with Georgian white coloration. They were inspired by the Russian fox domestication experiment. That's why I gave one of them a Russian name and the other's name (Lisa) is a Russian word for fox.

Oh kinda hard to see the name when it's all one word.

Now a couple professors from All Fur U (the fictional university I made up). Barbara Cotswold is a professor of linguistics and Balthazar Beaumont is a professor of history and medieval studies.

Drop bears are fictional carnivorous koalas that drop down out of the trees onto their prey. Ausies use them to scare tourists (sorry for exposing your prank, Ausies). I’ve never seen an anthro version of one, so I made one myself. He doesn’t have a name yet.

I’m experimenting with a Bruce Timm inspired toony style.

The style is based on the art of Bruce Timm, who’s probably best known (at least to me) for Batman the Animated Series.

Drop bears hmm you'd think us americans would have scarier versions since we have big black and brown bears in some places in the US.

You’d think so, but it seems to work for scaring tourists.

There’s a whole genre of creatures in American folklore called fearsome critters (I think) that are fun to look up. Most of them are more silly than scary though.

I’ve heard of Man Bat, the Batman character. He was an inspiration for this drawing. Is there a giant bat criptid?
