Title: Not improving art, even with practice!
Post by: Yoshimaster96 on October 07, 2015, 11:47:22 PM
I like art and drawing stuff in my free time. However, I'm really upset that, as much as I practice, I don't improve. At all. I really need advice.

Hey don't feel bad. I can't draw either, but I try. I bet you could draw better than me considering you have practice haha. I usually end up drawing some really bizarre almost horror like stuff because its so bad. What do you typically draw?

tell you what

you draw something as good as you can, put it somewhere you'll remember. No looking back at it.

in a few months to a year, do the best drawing you can. Compare the two.

I have an FA, and looking back at my art from several months ago, I can't see improvement.

Maybe you should try to vary your art. It seems like you have the same theme throughout your FA. Have you thought about drawing something different?

...Yeah. I took a look, and it'd definitely help to draw something else. Can't learn from doing the same thing over and over.

What should I draw, hyperbolic paraboloids? I'd rather eat Pringles.

You could draw pringles.

Draw your conscience. I'm sure that would be an interesting picture.

If you keep sticking to it, you can slowly but surely improve. I can look at my art from 8 years and laugh because it's so weird looking. Maybe I'll do the same to how I draw now in 8 more years?

Regardless, it's helpful to have some goals. HOW do you want to improve? What style are you going for? You seem to primarily draw chibi/super deformed characters. Do you want to keep on that track, or maybe something a little more realistic? Know what you want and work towards it.

And again, it will take work, and time. Draw as much as you can, and stretch your comfort zone. Draw tons of different characters, try out different shapes and styles. Maybe find an artist you like and trace of copy their pictures to get an idea of the shapes and lines(but for goodness' sake don't steal anyone's art  ;)). Maybe look at some pictures of humans or body diagrama to get a better grasp on anatomy if you need to.

I hope I have at least one helpful tip  XP

Okay, I'll try harder. The head is just lots of ellipsoids, so I'll start there.

I will give you some advice that is different from what you have been given so far. This relates to my musical endeavors, but it may help you regardless.

Sometimes I end up banging my head against a wall when it comes to learning a specific piece or trying to nail a tricky musical passage, and no matter how hard I try to get it I either hold steady or actually get worse. I might get frustrated, say a curse word or two, and get a bit worked up from sheer frustration.

So I take a break.

The break might be a day. It might be a week. It might even be a whole month. I just completely disengage and do something else for a while. Knit, write, play games, whatever. I just do something completely different. Sometimes that break allows your brain to dislodge whatever obstruction is in the way that is keeping you from improving.

Oftentimes, when I return to what I was doing after my break is through, I find out that I am able to do the task better than before.

Food for thought.

Dare I say, try and put as much detail in as possible.

For example drawing the fur on a wolf or the detail in an eye.
Try different styles of shading or drawing backgrounds.

Also not using digital isn't an excuse to not use colour and if you're having trouble, try drawing from a reference. Also if you find a character or a certain species is becoming too easy to draw, it may be time to try drawing an entirely different character or species.

Drawing wolf or fox fursonas is usually the way to go because so many people have them and they require a fair bit of detail to be good.

Also if you're serious about this, understand that this block is just the first of many. Just have fun doing it :)

Is it normal to, when using a ref, use the same pose as the ref?

What type of ref are you using? Sometimes I'll use stock photos of people as references if I need to figure out a certain pose. You can always tweak the pose any way you want to to fit what you are drawing. For instance, I've seen someone use a reference pic of a person swimming to draw a flying character.

If you're using another person's art as reference, I don't think it's a bad thing to copy the same pose, so long as you don't copy their character/design to claim as your own ^^

Okay, that's good, I don't really use their character, just the pose.

Now I have the same thoughts that's Normal or I think. It may look like it but it probably is improving although you cannot notice. I know I have this problem way to much. But sometimes I save an artwork for a year and compare with my others and start to see a difference trust me I get this all the time and it may seem that way but I'm sure your artwork is very good and it's getting better as you work. Also don't compare your work with others since I used to do that and it made me feel awful and stressed. Just keep it up, and stick with it. don't put yourself down and give up!

I know what you mean Yoshimaster96, I'm also attempting to improve my own drawing skills, I don't seem to improve much either. It won't prevent me from trying and practising. Watching other's art always inspires me to keep trying.

For me, other people's art makes me feel bad about my own art.

Also, here's an example of when I try to draw (the lines show what goes through my head):

Ain't that the truth. I get jealous sometimes, but it also inspires me to practice more. Good art makes me appreciate it more because not everyone is good as other people

everyone is different - when I see other's art, it just inspires me to keep trying.
