I'm a big fan of this area of writing. I was curious to see how many others happened to have the same interests! Since the Horror Genre is full of sub-genres, anything can really go here. Cosmic horror, Paranormal Horror, Monsters, Killer, Psychological, so on and so forth.
I figured I'd lead by example by posting some things I've read that I particularly like. If anyone wants to suggest some spooky reading, feel free to leave a booklist!
Authors
-H.P. Lovecraft is a favorite author. I'm a big fan of isolated townships filled with creepy cults to things that are maddening beyond reasoning.
-Koji Suzuki's another favorite, with such books as The Ring series, and Dark Water.
Novels
-Recently read a book called The Black involving a group of people on an oil rig preparing to start drilling. They brought up a sample and things go to hell. It has some Cthulhu-esque influence, and it shows in the isolation and what they unearth.
-House of Leaves is something I'm in the middle of. It's one of those books you have to take breaks in reading because it's thicker than the Christian Bible XD Quite a bit of it is psychological, and I almost want to say some paranormal.

I found The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to be pretty good. It has a fantastic feeling of mysterious isolation throughout and builds itself up really well.
The Divine Comedy is also great, the poem is ridiculously creepy as Dante explains hell in intense detail.
Darth Plagueis isn't exactly a horror novel, but it has plenty of horror elements as it explores the inner workings of the dark side of the force.
Utopia by Sir Thomas More is a horror novel depending on who you ask. More describes what he sees as being a Utopia, a world that is largely catholic with religious ideas outside of that general frame being looked down upon. If you are an atheist (like me) or any type of non-religious person you are persecuted and only by the grace of god not put into slavery, which is central to the society More describes.

By far my favorite author is Stephen King he's what got me back into reading and the horror genre X3
definitely my favorite book from him is "It"

I read some Stephen King books, but all I read is tragedy D: I don't think he's a true king of horror :P
But I suppose 'real horror' is tragedy xD
Without going so deep on it, there was a writer I used to read a lot until a few years ago. Darren Shan. Not technically an 'adult horror writer', but still worth mentioning. His books were always quite interesting to me.

I guess it's not traditional horror, but 'Johnny Got His Gun' by Dalton Trumbo is pretty damn haunting.
To be a soldier and survive a mortar, only to lose all your limbs/sight/voice/hearing and feeling? That's probably the most horrific story ever. But to then be denied death? Kept alive to be a freak show for "normal" people? That's definitely the most horrific story ever.
The movie did the book justice and it's cool how Metallica used it for the music video of "One" (which is pretty much just a song version of Trumbo's novel).

The scariest author I've ever read is M. R. James. More than once has his use of haunted or supernatural creatures, combined with what I can only call a linguistic jumpscare, kept me awake all night.
