Title: Gush about that band you love that no one you know seems too have heard of
Post by: Twilight Rose on January 31, 2015, 03:44:43 AM
Not in the hipster sense, but whenever you talk music with people and you mention it, you generally get "who?" as a reply. And hey, maybe we can get introduced to bands we'd never have heard of otherwise.

For instance, my favorite band by a landslide is Moonspell. I couldn't fathom how anyone could have a favorite band until I started listening to them, courtesy of Immelmann, the author of the Concession comic. Admittedly, I'm in the US and they're from Portugal, but their lyrics are mostly English and the music is beautiful... I think it's technically black metal but a lot of their songs don't really hit that.

Turmion Katilot is one of my favourite bands, I understand why others haven't heard of them cause they're finnish, but they're popular in Finland I believe.

Their music is just a great mix of heavy metal and electronic music, it works well in my opinion xD

Most of my acquaintances haven't heard of Relient K, but it's okay that they haven't. Relient K is a Christian-Alternative band from Minnesota, I believe, and were founded just a few short years ago between four and six. This is probably the only band of mine that not very many beings have heard of.

Symphony X is a pretty rare discussion piece when it comes to progressive metal. They do this amazing theme where every album they write is a sort of story with an exposition, a conflict, a climax, and a resolution. They also have little tidbits that kinda tell you more about the growth of those in the story. An example of a song that does this is "When All is Lost." And almost every story has something to do with pursuit of certain ideals or addresses some manner of social concerns. My friend Sean got me into them back in 2008, and he's pretty much the only other person I have seen that knew them well. Hell, I've seen at least two others that like Rhapsody of Fire or Kamelot, at least.

On the other side, you have Combichrist. Zaelis introduced me to them, and only one other person I've met knows who they are right away. Even lesser known is Andy LaPlegua's previous band, Icon of Coil, though he has disbanded that group for a while and just recently got them back to writing material. He also founded Panzer AG. However, I am more of a fan of Combicrhrist. Their music does address social issues, but they also have a habit of just indulging people's dark thoughts. He's also the man behind half of the Devil May Cry 5 soundtrack. He's very much an Aggrotech artist, and he's one hell of a guy. Much like Marilyn Manson, his songs may be pretty harsh and dark, but he's a **censor** good dude. His work varies from time to time, with his latest album (We Love You) full of more Industrial Metal than standard electronic, and his first album having lots of classic Industrial, while he has even experimented with Electro. Hell, even Futurepop and Hard Trance. If you like dark and heavy music in the electronic genre, Combichrist is a hell of a good artist to look up.

Anyone ever heard of Assemblage 23? A lot of their lyrics are identifiable and deal with struggles like bipolar disorder, parental suicide, self-isolation, disillusionment with humanity... Big stuff.

Screaming Females. They are a punk rock trio that have been around for almost a decade, yet have never received any attention, apart from touring with Garbage and some others. A lot of their songs are catchy yet maintain a nice punk rock sound to them.

Jonathan Davis is my damn hero. Their music is so amazing and meaningful, I guarantee anyone who likes metal or appreciates a message in a song will love KoЯn.

The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band.

Lead by musical genius Neil Innes they were strangely intertwined with the Beatles and Monty Python.  They are funny, poignant and creative.  And yet... nobody seems to know them.

@Caitey, I'm pretty sure Slayer and Korn are quite well know hun XD

Pierce the Veil,BlackVeil Brides, Area 11, All Time low, and Falling in Reverse.
They're all rock bands and whenever I try to tall my friends about them all I get is a "who?". My favorite is probably all of them!  X3
Some good songs to listen to get aquainted to them.
Pierce the Veil:King for a Day or Bulls in the Bronx.
Blacl Veil Brides: In the End or Knives and Pens
Area 11:Tokyo House Party or Dream and Reality
All Time Low:Dear Maria Count Me In or Weightless
Falling in Reverse:Fashionably Late or The Drug in Me is You

Leo, you need Slayer. Listen to Madatory Suicide, Ependable Youth, Raining Blood, Angel Of Death, and my personal favorite, Dead Skin Mask!

I've heard of almost all the bands you've named, can't say I like any of them however.

Slayer is the epitome of Thrash Metal.

Frankie Cosmos and Flatsound. Probably my two favorite artists that almost nobody knows about
also Willow Smith (seems like the only song people know by her is "Whip My Hair" but she has some really great music)

The Mighty Lemon Drops

They were a British band from the 80's. One of the first indie rock bands ever. Their music is very energetic, very fun.

It seems like all of my favourite stuff is by artists and bands that are a little too obscure for me to accidentally find fans of. Most mainstream I got into recently was Nana Grizol, which is fairly popular but I still hadn't heard of them from anyone but myself.

King Crimson would be mine. They have been around since the sixties and Robert Fripp is a guitar god, but I have never met somebody in the wild who knows who they are. Then I put on 21st Century Schizoid Man and jaws typically drop.

Zoogz Rift. Just... Zoogz Rift.

Imagine someone like Frank Zappa, with heavy jazz influences, bizarre jam sessions, lots of instruments not customary to rock, i.e. marimbas (guy loves marimbas), saxophones, brass sections, usually surreal or comedic lyrics. The main difference is that he doesn't really sing as much as rant angrily in some songs. Definitely not for everyone, but it works for me. If you're into avant-garde music, give Zoogz Rift a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Hmm... Lets see if I can think up some really quick...

Team Sleep (Post Rock / Experimental)
Crosses (Dream Pop / Witch House)
JMSN (Alt R&b )
Acid Bath (Sludge Metal)
Black Light Burns (Industrial)
Butthole Surfers (Experimental / Neo-psychedelia)
MSTRKRFT (Electronic / Glitch)
Majid Jordan (Alt R&b )

Give 'em a shot!

Sabaton.

Riff-centric power metal with historical lyrics.

They've been my favorite band for 5 years and counting. About a year ago, I saw them live after waiting about 4 years for them to do an all ages show in my area. It was AMAZING.

I also met their drummer after the show. He was a really friendly, down to earth guy.

Slough Feg seems very underrated. A metal/folk metal band, sometimes raw and lo-fi sound but not very forced and sounds genuine.
I found them about a year ago and I've come to listen to them religously.

The singer and guitarist was involved with another great band called Hammers of Misfortune.

A lot of people know of Ninja Sex Party but not many know of Danny "Sexbang" Avidan's previous band know as Skyhill. It's pretty awesome, Danny's awesome vocals but in a serious setting so it appeals to those who don't like the comedy stuff, only problem is one album.

I only listen to, like, 1 band, but that's just because I don't feel like getting any music from the other band I like. The one I currently listen to Pheonix, which when I mention, my friends just stare at me. The other one I may just like because I'm the drummers son, but I really like this old band called Slowburn. :) Bet nobody's heard of THAT band before?

I really like "Tristam".  They release their music under the Monstercat Albums and do some work with other artists but they are what I call Lyrical Dubstep. I don't know if others call it that but yea.

I have also heard and like Relient K, falling in reverse and Pierce the veil which have all been said.

Foreign bands that I like are "Abingdon Boys School" and "Nightwish" . The first is like a Japanese Linkin Park and have a lot of songs as openings for anime. The second is a Finnish rock opera band that also tends to turn their albums into stories. They even made a movie out of one of their albums called Imaginaerum.

Eclipse.
It's such a shame that they never became popular (Metal/rock band.)
Dragonland
They're also pretty good.
Ruskaja
But they're such a weird music niche that it's understandable that no one has heard of them. (German, Rock, Polka.)
Poets of the Fall
Another Rock band.
Nonpoint.
You guys probably know them if you played, WWE SUPER SLAM 2008. (They're the ones that made the song Everybody Down). They also did the remix of In the Air Tonight for Miami Vice. I love their song, I said it.
Pain
They're a weird rock band.
Crimson Glory

And finally Alstromeria Record for there awesome Electric dance music.
