Title: Musical Instruments
Post by: Caesium Iodide on June 19, 2014, 08:22:18 AM
So my curiosity has gotten the best of me and whatnot.

I was wondering if anyone did musical things like played an instrument, sang, composed music, etc.

I play the baritone saxophone, and sing in two choirs. Music is pretty cool  :) .

I play piano, and I'm not a composer but I like to make piano transcriptions of songs sometimes.

I typically transcribe music by C418 (Daniel Rosenfeld), who does mainly electronic music, so it's not often written down. However the music he makes is fairly easy to write, so I've often written played the music at school talent shows and stuff.

I played piano for quite a while, been playing since I was five but only really took it seriously when I was 12. I quit for 2 years and only recently got back into it. In terms of making music I've made a few songs, not using a computer though, but I find I am quite good at improving songs, making up songs on the fly.

Not really. My piano playing, I've done for 22 years. But guitar, I only played for like 5, and now I can't even play more than chords anymore. The sax is easy to pick up again, played it for a solid 10 years. If anyone wants to know, an alto-sax is a giant, brass recorder. Not hard to learn. chaps the hell out of your lips, though. And singing just comes naturally. I've been in over 15 different choirs in my life, but then again, I kinda cheated because I grew up with a Karaoke machine in the house that I used every single day.

I believe I can post here.. Maybe.

I play guitar, bass, I'm slowly learning piano. I know various instruments inside and out as a result of working almost a year at a local music store (It'll be a year on Sept. 14!). I can tear apart a trumpet or clarinet or pretty much any instrument at this point, but do I know how to play them? Nooo D:

Learning a musical instrument is all about patience, I've more than once go "I'm never going to play this song", but sure enough with a few weeks (or months) of practice, the song becomes easier and easier.

I tend to have jumps in ability with practice too.  So it feels like it isn't helping and then you level up!

Sometime it feels like gradual improvement but rarely for me.

Practice is key.

When it comes to instruments and development, when just playing on your own without any sort of guidance (lessons), I've noticed development coming in plateaus. You'll improve a bit and then nothing will help and then you'll get better again.

I have my first real piano concert soon.  I've played in many concerts but they were for the American Guild of Music and I only performed in front of a small group of judges and people.
Now my teacher thinks I'm ready for the "big shows". I have three weeks to perfect the first movement of Beethoven's pathetique.

Yesterday I auditioned for NWIHB, which is "North West Iowa Honor Band." I was accepted on my Bari, and I got first chair. FIRST CHAIR. I simply could not contain my joy and I'm very happy about this. All this past week before auditions, I told myself that I was going to make Honor Band, and my junior year, audition and make the Iowa All-State High School Band because I know I can do it!! Practice practice practice!!

Salutations!!

So, because I am in jazz band at my school, this requires me to wake at what seems to be an uncodly hour, but it seems that ways if you are not a morning person…

Now, the tunes that my jazz band is playing:
Critical Mass - Jeff Jarvis
Satin n Glass - ((I can't remember at the moment))
Pagan Pie - ((Same))

If you ever get the chance, listen to those. The band' favorite and my personal favorite is Critical Mass, as it will be featuring me on Bari sax!!!

I hope you all have a wonderful day!! Because it's like 6 am here…

I play guitar and flute.

Ah yes. I used to play flute. Unfortunately, I couldn't stand playing it anymore and at the time I was learning how to play tenor sax, which is really a beautiful instrument but not as majestic as Bari. DAT BARI!! Hnnnnn~

Anyway, both are good instruments. But just because I don't play flute any longer doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.

Yay music!

This past weekend, I went to a state level competitions where I participated in multiple ensembles and a solo. I received a Division I, AKA a "Superior" rating, in all the events I was involved in. My solo was really pretty. And tomorrow, I will be leaving for my state's jazz championships! Hope we place first!! B)

As a musician in high school/secondary school, I've grown very attached to my band director; by far the best teacher I've ever had for anything. But today I learned he is no longer staying with my school. I am sad, because he is really cool and wanted me to do crazy cool things on my bari. It is a sad day for a band kid at my school…

Graduation.

I played with my band and all of my senior friends. My band director was somber but he also looked happy. I was going to cry…

The song we played is called "Solas Ané (Yesterday's Joy)" by Samuel R. Hazo. It was commissioned for a music teacher who had passed away. It's a nice piece. And I realized my band director is Yesterday's Joy. He's wonderful and so good at what he does.

Anyway, I'm not going to use my voice as an instrument anymore. I'm not good at it.

I love stringed instruments and I play a few different ones. I started and an early age with the acoustic violin but I mostly gravitate towards electric now. Thinking of getting an electric cello. That would be awesome!

I used to be in a choir, though I left a few years back. Now I play the bass saxophone and I have never been happier. <3 Went from Recorder when I was young to flute than to Sax. Weird transitioning, haha.

x3 -Highpaws Nemael- I used to be in the choir as well in my school though I may get into choir once again in college if it has one. I used to play the piano, recorder, but now I'm playing the guitar and so far it's sticking... till I get bored of it like the other two xD. I want to try the trumpet or violin since I saw an amazing video (gliding fingers look awesome o_o x3), though I know that I wouldn't be able to get either one of those two since money problems are always op :P. I hope in the future I could at least get the violin and rage at it since that's what I like about learning new things. You rage at first but once you get the hang of it you look back at your old self and laugh x3

You know... I played flute before I switched to sax. I learned to play tenor when I was still playing flute, but playing saxophone made me feel a hell of a lot better about myself though, and I could do more. So that next year, I switched to bari. I absolutely LOVE baritone sax. Hhhhhh, I currently play two different ones (that my high school  owns), one is for marching and pep and the other is for concert/solos/jazz band.

I began at a very early age, so I suppose I had that as an advantage. Are there any music stores in your area that sell instruments? Oftentimes they will have lessons or know of people who give them. That is how I got started with electric guitar.

There is also the whole self-taught route, but the violin is one of those instruments where I would strongly recommend lessons.

I mainly play guitar and piano. Blues, Jazz, Folk, Electronic, Atmospheric, Metal, rock, Classical, Romantic, Baroque, Renaissance and Chant pieces, I used to sing but I kinda suck at it so I try not to. Compose my own music, transcribe and play covers.

Also play around with my other instruments from time to time, various percussion instruments, some wind instruments, a violin which I never got around to learning, other things tooooo.
