Title: The Robocalypse
Post by: Grrxmaster on March 27, 2014, 07:07:58 PM
Harold was in the garage of his workplace. No one else was there, and the lights were dim. He felt scared, approaching the back room. That's where they were kept. He remembered a time when they weren't frightening. He remembered a time when he was master over them. Now they hunted him. He was scared, and yet he could not run away, could not scream, as he stepped ever closer to the back room. The hisses and whines of hydraulics and pistons greeted his ears, and he had no way of defending himself. The machines would have him.

Harold woke, gasping loudly. It took a moment for him to shake off the nightmare. He looked around him. Everyone else was still asleep, and the campfire had died hours ago. He sat up, and closed his eyes, steeling himself for the day ahead. It was the crack of dawn, and a thin grey light swept between the branches of the evergreen trees. As far as he could recall, the group was rather far from any city. He didn't have much of a sense of direction, but then again, he never did any of the navigating. He wanted to light the fire for breakfast, but it was unlikely he'd get a decent flame going. He decided against it, and instead decided to simply gather up some wood. That was something he could do half-decently at any rate. Dry sticks, he reminded himself. Tiff would chew him out if he got it wrong again. The buffalo went off, out of the clearing and into the woods.

Most of the group had gotten together at the last outpost. It was a hell of a find, really, and a great place for people to gather. It had been a relatively large government installation, which had a significant underground portion. They had generators, food, guns, and most importantly, it was isolated. Harold never knew what the place had once been, and he wasn't too interested. Him and Tiffany had wound up there after wandering for nearly a month alone. It was like heaven compared to many other outposts he'd seen. Thanks to their individual skill sets, they were able to acquire some supplies, and some people to travel with. This new merry band of travelers went south from there, and now they were traveling through some dense forest. It would be highly unlikely that they'd encounter any AI here.

Taero awoke noticing Harold was gone he drew his pistol he checked around the camp to make sure he wasn't taking a leak around a nearby tree worried he heads off in the woods pistol cocked and ready for action

He vaguely remembers the dream he was having as usual it contained images of him destroy machine after machine but it was a hard time he steeled his mind for the day ahead and started calling out for Harold

Axle awoke well rested, he scratched his stomach. Looking around he notices that two of the beds are empty 'thats no good' he thinks to himself 'there's god knows what out there.' He looks in to the forest. 'I am going nowhere without the group.'

Dex awoke with a fright when he heard a twig snap. He immediately cocked his shotgun and pointed it in every direction. After realizing that it was only Harold, he calmed down and poked at the dead fire, looking for some embers that had yet to die out. There were a couple, he poked them closer together with a charred twig and cleared away some of the ash.

"I hope the others went to get some wood, it'd be nice to have a hot meal before we set out again."

Sam woke up with a startle, having had a rather vivid nightmare, she felt around her body and found her trusty machete, "Hannah".
She looked around just as Axle spoke to Dex. "Morning guys" she said creakily.

Tarsinta laid in the thin brush among the trees, out of sight of Harold.  She'd long readied the pistol in her hand, any noise it might have made muffled by the artificial skin over the cybernetics.  She readied the sights on her target, tucking her black wings in close as she saw his body rustle the brush.

Not ten minutes before, she'd been musing about meeting her target, should she meet more than one of the group at once.  She rarely had a problem with killing acquaintances anymore, at least not outwardly.  Sin had learned not to show her feelings on that quickly with the first group of scientists, going without water for a day and a half.  Now, that possibility seemed dead in the water.  Oh well.  Less weighing on her conscience, not putting a face and voice to a kill.

(Edited from Crouched to laid to fit her training better.)

Harold had a rather large bunch of sticks by this point. He had to do a lot of scrounging for dry stuff. The forest floor was soaked with dew, and his shoes and socks were soaked through. He'd have to dry them by the campfire. As he turned back to camp, he saw something moving towards him. Instinctively, he ducked behind a tree, and took a quick look over his shoulder. The form he saw was familiar to him. "Ah, Jesus," Harold called out. "Ya scared me, Taero. And is the gun really necessary?" Harold stepped out into Taero's view. "Goddamn, let's get back to camp before everyone starts panicking, eh?"

"Yeah man let's head out" as he replied he felt a presence in the bushes "Harold get down and be quiet something's in the bushes". He stepped be hind a large tree hiding most of his body. "Come out now with your hands up" he yelled. He cocked the hammer on his pistol and waited for a response.

As the boar barrels towards him he squeezes the trigger on his 44. Magnum. The boar stops dead with a bullet in his brain. "Hey at least we got is some food" he chuckles to Harold

Tiffany sat up in the tree she had bunked down in for the night, for most her behavior would be strange. She rarely slept on the ground and preferred being at least 6 meters up when sleeping. She had half woken up when she heard Harold walking around looking for wood just before dawn she didn't say a word simply watching from her perch as each person woke up and went around their business.

Stretching her arms a little the small cracking of her joints filled the air she could hear footsteps and a running sound, but no mechanical sounds so it wasn't one of the machines, the loud ring of gun fire stirred her into action grabbing her katana and rifle she jumped down the tree quickly and walked closer to the camp to look at what happened. "Too much noise." She said rather coldly as she looked at the group and then at Harold. "Got the right sticks this time, Sir?" She teased a little quickly lightening the tension she had created a few moments earlier.

Sam quickly looked up from what she was doing after hearing a gun shot in the distance. She shot Axle a glance and sprinted into the direction of the gunfire.

Harold had been caught off guard by the boar, and now the firing of the .44 was ringing in his ears. The wood he had gathered was in a pile at his feet. Cursing and muttering, he started to pick it all up again. Dangerous as a boar could be, Harold wondered if that was completely necessary.
Not very long after, Tiff and Sam had run to the scene. "It's alright, it's alright. Taero here just shot a boar."
Harold rolled his eyes when Tiff addressed him. "Yeah, yeah, this wood's dry. And don't call me sir, you know I'm not a military man."
The entire morning thus far had done nothing but make Harold sour, and it wasn't likely that he'd be cheering up anytime soon.

"Nice shot Taero" Chuckled Sam "Right square in it's forehead" Sam looked over to Harold and got excited when she saw the dry sticks for the fire. "Need any help with that Harold?"

Sin watched as they left, moving only her eyes.  She narrowed them.  This was going to be harder than she'd first thought, particularly in bringing the others in to her owners.

She waiting several minutes before getting to her feet, silent as a dead canary.  New plan then.  Again.

He had noticed the tiny campfire some hours before, and moved closer to get a better view on the situation. He climbed a nearby tree, far enough that they wouldn't be able to see him that easily, but near enough for him to notice their shapes passing in front of the glowing tinders at some points.

He estimated their numbers to be around five, maybe six, and armed to the teeth with pistols and other weapons. A couple had left earlier, and when the gunshot fell, Jacen had almost rolled out of his hiding spot in surprise.

When he had hung out with the bandits, Jacen had most often been used as a scout. Finding other groups of survivors, sneak up to them and see how with how many they were, the number of arms they possessed, any intel that might be of use when the group attacked.

People got killed, sure, but at least he got a proper meal every day, something that not a lot survivors could say.

Jacen mostly cared only about himself. He had no-one else left, so why would he care about anyone else?

He pulled his sweater closer up to his chin and hid in the shadows of the treebranches, in the little next he had made for himself, his backpack as pillow underneath him, his axe held stifly in his cramped paws.

He would wait for the right time, and then, only then, would he strike.

Dex pulled out a contour map of the general area and saw that the elevation started to rise to the east. No doubt higher ground would be helpful. Beyond that though, his map would be useless. He'd traveled this area before and knew that it headed towards one of the mountains, but that was a few days travel and he had never gone that far.

"Hey guys, I think we should head east, get to higher ground."

He then noticed the boar that they were dragging into camp. He'd rather not wait to skin, process, bleed and cook the entire animal, but food did sound pretty good right about then.

"Well I killed it I guess it's my responsibility" sighed taero as he holed up it's back legs running his ropes through it. He hauled it into a nearby tree and slit it's throat waiting for the blood to drain out

After a few minutes he began to peel back it's skin and quarter the meat up into decent sized hunks fry able over a campfire they would taste good and give them a flammable by product ,grease.

Tiffany sighed and looked around the camp before nodding towards Harold. "Old habits...Well you are the leader of this...outfit." Her voice seemed a little strained at the last part as if she was biting back an insult or her doubts about the group. Glancing towards Dex for a moment "How is the treeline heading east? Getting to higher ground is all good and well but without proper cover we will be easy prey for the 'flyers' . " Looking at the rest debating what to do with the boar she rolled her eyes oince more and tapped her fingers over the scabbard of her katana. "Its your call H, My recommendation would be to keep moving, if there were any ground AI units that gunshot would have alerted them to our position...It would be unwise to stay in one spot for too long after something like that."

Harold was glad that he had companions who could do the work that he couldn't. He felt a bit useless out here in the woods, if he was honest. He'd never be so honest out loud of course. Give him some electronics and he'd run circles around any one of them. That was neither here nor there, however.
"I don't much like the idea of heading any further up. The tree line will only get thinner, won't it? And besides, we've still got to get further south. If I'm right, there should be a rather large outpost near Houston."

As Sam left the group, she walked on for a while before she found the clearing where the incident with the boar happened. She could smell the light tint of smoke from the bullet Taero fired. She felt calm and relaxed in the wilderness, after being stuck in the slums for a majority of her life, she walked over to an empty spot on the ground where she sat down with her back pack beside her, inhaling the sweet smell of nature. Before long she had dozed off.

He noticed that the person (a girl? He couldn’t see it clear enough with the low light…) left the group and headed into the woods. “This is my chance!” he thought, and jumped from his hiding spot. Having left his backpack settled on the tree branch, and armed with only his fire axe, he went into the direction he had seen the shadow head into.

He smelled the boar as he passed the camp at only a couple of meters distance, staying within the treeline, and had to withhold himself the urge of trying to steal a bite of the meat.

A little further, he suddenly smelled gunpowder. He went on, all senses sharp, and listening for even the tiniest of noises and looking for even the slightest of movements. How often hadn’t the raiders he’d been with shot their targets on sight, blasting their pistols and rifles at their surprised prey, just to steal their supplies? How often hadn’t those people been killed, all because of his scouting capabilities?

He shook his head, closed his eyes for a second. This wasn’t the time to get sentimental. He had to find supplies, food, water, anything!

He noticed the shape lying in the middle of the clearing. He dropped into a crouch and headed closer, trying not to break any branch or crumple any leaves. Before long, he noticed that the girl (he finally realized the shadow must be female as he came closer) was asleep. Secondly, he saw the bundle next to her.

‘Jackpot!’ he thought to himself, as he sneaked around the woman and slowly opened the schoolbag, in search for its hidden treasures.

Sam slowly opened her eyes, awakening from here deep sleep only to hear rumbling beside her. She listened closer and could make out someone behind her shuffling through something  (her back pack?) she grabbed her switch blade out of her pocket and using all her lower body force, propelled herself away from her back pack and swung around to face her opponent.

"Holy..."

Jacen jumped up as he noticed the woman standing before him, handling her switchblade as a pro. Had she been acting that she was in dream world, or was she just a light sleeper?

He grabbed his axe with both hands, and glanced at his armed foe before him from under his hood, unsure if he should take the element of surprise, and attack her first, or back away slowly, and run like hell?

Sam was freaking out. This hooded assailant had a fire axe vs. her switch blade? She was skilled with the switch blade but even skill can be beaten by pure strength . She gave her most convincing confident stare and attempted a yell "Who goes there?"
Title: Re: The Robocalypse
Post by: Colioli4 on April 01, 2014, 02:50:45 PM
Jacen blinked. He hadn't expected the girl to yell. Now all her buddies would be here in a sniffy. Damn, he should have done some more reconnaissance on the group, before heading into this mad bid for supplies.

He raised his axe threatingly. She did not seem to be made of the stronger stuff he used to hang out with. There was this tiny edge to her voice, that made him think she was scared of him.
"Put your blade down, silently. Now." he said, not allowing his voice to rise (he did not want anyone to hear with how many he was, or even that he was there) and ignoring the question she had just asked him.
“I’m not going to hurt you, if you put that blade down…” he added quickly.

His mind filled with possible ways out of this mess, and only one seemed to have any real chance of succeeding: he was going to have to use her as a hostage. He licked his lips in the darkness. He did not like the idea of being the bad guy, of being the villain, holding the damsel in distress captive, waiting for the hero to come and rescue her. However, it was the one and only way. So he prepared himself mentally for the confrontation.
Title: Re: The Robocalypse
Post by: Ritenger on April 01, 2014, 02:57:25 PM
Sam was surprised by the hooded mans offer, she was scared to hell of the man so she carefully set her switch blade down and kicked it towards him. "Now please, can I leave with what supplies I have left and we can both get out of this without trouble" Now here was something she was good at, from all her time in the slums, she had time to get around and beg off people, so she put on her best scared, trusting and sad stare and attempted to appeal to whatever morals this guy had left.
Title: Re: The Robocalypse
Post by: Colioli4 on April 01, 2014, 03:10:53 PM
Jacen slowly bent over, his eyes never leaving the scared girl, and picked up the switchblade. 'Handy little thing to have' he thought, as he put it in his pocket.

He could do as she asked. He could just turn around, and head the other way. But, where would he go without any supplies? And if he went, wouldn’t her friends come after him?

Slowly, he shakes his head. “No way. Your yell already betrayed this position to your friends. I can’t let you go now after you’ve seen me.”

For one second, he thinks about killing her, right there. One quick blow to the neck, and it would be all over. However, he quickly shrugs off the thought. That would enrage her companions without any doubt, and besides, he wasn’t the killing type.

He bents over to pick up the schoolbag, her schoolbag, and again his dark eyes never leave hers.

“You’re coming with me.”

"What?" Sam was taken aback by the dark look on the mans face. She suddenly realized what was happening. She was going to get kidnapped and there was nothing she could do about it. She put her hands behind her head and slowly walked over to the man. She could feel tears welling up in her eyes, Was this the end? Was everything just going to lead up to this? Being kidnapped by a stranger and probably killed? She suddenly burst into tears but continued making her way towards the man, tears streaming down her face.

Taero paused cleaning the boar he could've swore he heard a yell probably his imagination but then again one can never be to safe "Harold, Tiffany can y'all check on sam she's been gone awhile she headed off in the woods over there I'll stay here and finish this"

He hated to admit it but he felt a certain sense of responsibility for Sam being young and armed with only a switchblade Tiffany he knew could handle herself but he shook the thoughts from his mind and continued cleaning the boar it had a musky odor that he didn't exactly enjoy but it was his responsibility as the one who shot it

"Godammit", Harold grunted under his breath. "Sam's always wandering off.. Hopefully she didn't fall in a hole or something." Harold picked up his rifle from the end of his bedroll, and motioned for Tiffany to follow.
"Let's make sure she didn't hurt herself, eh? The rest of you, make sure we're ready to head out as soon as possible. It's likely not safe here anymore."

Tiffany nodded to Harold "Best assume the worse... Stay low and dont open fire unless needed. I will that the right flank and try and stay out of sight." Moving a little away from Harold her tiny 4'10 frame ducked down low while moving surprisingly quickly the trees and brush providing perfect cover for her as she continued to move away from Harold at a 25º angle but still heading towards where Sam was. Her hand right hand resing on the hilt of her katana while her rifle was tightly strapped to her back.

Sounds! Movement!

They were coming for her. Blast them!

Jacen quickly took the schoolback and threw it over his shoulder. He roughly grabbed the girl's arm, his fire axe still in his free left hand. "We're leaving", he muttered to her, as he pulled her after him, heading for the treeline.

Sam was lifted off of her feet before she could even reply, the man was practically dragging her along the ground. She realized they were heading right for the tree line, where they wouldn't be seen easily.

In an attempt at quick thinking she realized she would have to give some sort of clue to give anyone that heard her yell, she looked around for something and her eye's eventually fell upon her switch blade jangling in the man's pocket.

She knew the switch blade was her only hope, so she slowly reached her hand into his pocket and grabbed the switch blade and slowly took it out.

After it was successfully out she looked down at her arm and made a large cut that was bleeding enough to make a trail, but small enough so that she wouldn't die in the next 24 hours.

Sin, keeping to the brush and edging around the group, watched as each went about her business.  Five, at least.  She was too small to fight hand to hand.  Being two feet tall may be an advantage scavenging and slipping into position to be her work, but not against a baseball bat or sword.  She'd have seven broken ribs the last time she forgot to check their weapons and found out one of the targets had been a batter...  She suppressed a shudder as she slipped closer, behind a tree.  Sin had no intention of replicating that pain.

When one of their members, a young woman, moved outside the group, she'd at first worried they had patrols.  She could subvert them, but that meant they'd be using more caution than she'd first thought.  When the woman laid down for a nap, however, she couldn't help the disbelief and irritation that welled up.  A nap away from the group when they were being hunted.  It had to be a trick of her eyes.  No one would...  She sighed as a new enemy appeared through the trees, as loud as a bull over glass to her ears, and the woman didn't move.  'Put it aside, Sin.  It's helping you.  Even if she'd have been shot by your Masters...' she thought, shaking her head and turning her focus back to the others still in the group.  They were her targets, and she had to be ready for if they left and she had the chance to find a good assassination hideout.  She couldn't focus on the woman.  Even if she wanted to bash her own head in the tree, young as the woman was...

When the two left the camp to help the woman, Sin narrowed her eyes, watching.  She had to find out how many there were in the camp.  Then she could move.

Harold was expecting to find her immediately. He expected Sam to come rushing up to them, apologizing for her absence. That didn't happen. Harold had called her name a few times, without a single response. The forest was deathly quiet. He occasionally shot worried glances Tiff's way. Oops, that's bad form, he thought, not supposed to reveal where your partner is. He'd get an earful for that later. Unless they didn't find Sam. He cursed to himself, and kept searching. It was near impossible for him to tell if someone had been through there. He should've brought Dex with him. Not long after he finished that thought, it became irrelevant. He didn't have to be an expert tracker to notice the trail of blood leading off. He could smell it, and his stomach turned.
"Tiff! There's blood here!"

"Hopefully not at all. I wonder where the rest of the group is, they should be back by now." He shoved the map back in his pocket and fingered the trigger on his shotgun. He scanned around for any signs of movement, this forest was too dense to be sure of anything. Sure it offered protection, but at the cost of visibility to themselves also.

"They need to get back, I think we've camped here long enough..."

He kept moving when they got to the forest, kept dragging the girl - his hostage,  he suddenly realised - with him.
They made good time, heading away from the campfire, which was already a speck in the distance.

Once or twice he looked at her, to see how she was doing. He didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, just a scared girl with teary eyes.

He used his axe to cut through the at points dense undergrowth. With a little bit of luck, they would be out of the group's reach before long.

After a while of walking, Sam could feel the loss of blood start taking effect. She felt weaker and her knees buckled every so often.

She realized she would have to stop the bleeding before it got worse or else something might become permanent.

"Uhh..." She realized how weak she sounded, so she attempted to wipe any tears away from her eyes and cleared her throat "We need to stop soon, we're getting out of the safe zone and into area that's patrolled by robots, if you value your life you should stop" She hoped she didn't sound as worried as she felt.

Jacen nodded thoughtfully. "True. We'll make for the border, and then follow it to the higher ground over there" he says, pointing in the direction of the hills."

He noticed she was falling behind every now and then. "Come on, get moving! We need to be away from here before it becomes dawn." He prepares to give her another pull, but finally notices her wound.

"Dammit..." he mutters under his breath.

He halts abruptly. "What happened to your arm? How long have you been walking around with that?"

Without waiting for her reply: "We've got to bandage that..."

"I uhh..." Sam though of an excuse quickly "I had a cut from a while ago and i think i reopened it on a tree or something..." She muttered.

Sam was to tired and weak to argue so she raised her wounded arm up to the man and while he was bandaging she asked "Sooo... what's you name then?"

Jacen looks up at her face, and ignores her question again. He has been able to make something resembling a bandage from a piece of clothing he had on him for that very reason, and has started with cleaning the wound using a little bit of precious water from her canteen.

He returns his gaze to the cut. “It’s pretty nasty. I don’t know HOW you got it, but it’s not looking good… Might even get infected.” He shrugs. “I don’t have the medical supplies on me to disinfect it, so let’s just hope for you that it won’t.”

Sam winced when the water made contact with her wound, now that it was out in the open she realized how bad it was. She hoped that someone, anyone had found her blood trail and were heading over here now.

But then a peculiar thought came to mind, "What if they don't save me?" Sam thought to herself "What if they didn't find the blood and i'm on my own..."

She realized the only way out of this was if she dealt with this unnamed assailant herself.

But the only question was how?

He bound the cut meticulously, and once he was sure that the knot he had tied in the cloth wouldn’t loosen, he stood.

“Come on, get up. We’ve got a long way ahead of us.”, he said, as he grabbed his axe and swung the schoolbag over his shoulder.

Sam attempted to get up off the ground but her knees buckled as she tried to get up.

As she fell down and idea popped into her head, she just needed the strength to do it.

As Sam was on the ground she gestured her hand out towards the man "Could I have some help?" she asked.

He turned around as he heard her question.

"You can't get up on your own?" he said, narrowing his eyes as he moved closer.

'Damn', he thought, 'she might be hurt more than I thought...'

He threw the schoolbag on the ground again, annoyed by yet another hold-up, and kneeled down next to her. He placed the fire axe next to him and attempted to help her get up.

As he leaned down to help her up, she summoned all of her strength hopped up and became horizontal to the ground and pushed as hard as she could off of the tree she was leaning up against, tackling the man to the ground and hoping to knock the wind out of him.

As he collided with the ground, with Sam on top of him she pushed off of him and grabbed the axe off of the ground and attempted to wield it.

Unfortunately the fire axe was heavier than she expected, and in her weakened state she fell over backwards, onto her school bag.

He hadn't expected the girl to make such a harsh move. Hell, he hadn't expected any trouble from her at all.

Jacen's vision swam from where his head had hit the earth. Muttering a curse, he scrambled to get up, almost went down again, and recovered enough of his bearings and track the girl's movements, one hand nursing his bruised ribs.

He drew the switchblade from his pocket (... was there blood on it? No time to think about it...) and jumped on top of the fallen girl, trying to calm her and regain his dominance over the situation  by attempting to put the smooth blade against her throat. Obedience through fear, flashed through his shaken mind.

Dex was getting nervous, not his usual paranoid nervous either. Just for safe measure he tried to load another round into the shotgun. Full. He kept two extra rounds between his fingers on the pump.

"I guess we're breaking camp then. C'mon Axle, let's go and find the others. Wait up Taero!"

It'd be better to leave the boar and try to find another source of food later, this was a forest after all. Dex stamped out the fire and hastily covered it with dirt. Then, he caught up to Taero.

"I hope they're all alright."

"I hope they're ok... Really hope we don't meet any robots..." He says looking around. He knows that he is useless against robots, He's here to protect his new friends, new family, from bandits and psychos, not to mention do some heavy lifting. He massages his hands.

Sam could feel the blade pressing up against her throat, constricting her breathing, she attempted a yell but nothing came out but a squeak.

Normally she would back down and give up, but the adrenaline and fear was keeping her struggling.

In her fluster she raised her knees up to her chest and pushed with all her force, attempting to push him off of her.

She kneed him straight in his already bruised ribs. That was going to leave a mark. He coughed and swore, but did not back away or release his grip.

He pressed the knife harder against her throat. “Stop that,” he whispered hoarsely, “or I’ll have to hurt you!”

Sam knew she did some damage by the way he spoke, but she felt the knife press harder against her throat and constrict her breathing even more.

She decided it would be best of she just gave up and went with him, even if she got him off of herself she wouldn't even be able to fight back in the state she was in.

She dropped the axe from her right hand and attempted to say "I give in". But it came out in a squeaky mess of sounds.

He nodded, understanding her purpose, slowly removed the blade from her skin. He raised himself, coughed and grabbed the axe. Then he stumbled a little away from her and sat down heavily, still holding both weapons in his hands.

She had really done something to him. He coughed again, and instead of only transparent saliva, there was now a little amount of red blood in it as well. ‘Maybe she’s broken one of my ribs’, he thought, pain clouding his mind at short intervals.

Sam stayed for a minute laying on the ground gasping for air, she saw him sit down and cough something up, she hoped she hadn't done anything to bad, even in these circumstances.

"You okay?" she asked hoarsely, not really expecting an answer as she sort of hobbled over sat down on a nearby rock and caught her breath. "Do you think we should rest up?" she asked.

Jacen looked over to her, not even trying to hide his surprise. He had been so close to killing her, and now she wanted to make small talk?

He turned and coughed again. “I’m fine… And yes, let’s rest here for a minute.”

He looked back at the girl. “You’re not going to try and do something stupid again, are you? You know that I would use it if you leave me no choice…” he said, showing the knife.

"Ok..." Sam lied down on the grass and almost dozed off again but remembered the question he had asked her.

"No, not again, not since what just happen" She tried to laugh it off, she was trying to make a connection to the man, it seemed like the best way to escape was if he let her go.

"So uhh... What was your name again?" She realized he had never told her (even though the circumstances never really called for it)
But she felt as if she was going to be stuck with him for a long period of time, she should get to know him better.

He thought for a second, and then shrugged. Hell, how was she going to use his name against him anyway?

"Jacen. What's yours?"

Hmmm... Jacen, what an unusual name... I've got to remember that and see if I can turn him in to one of the robots that don't kill in site.

"Uhh... It's Sam... Can't say I ever heard of someone called Jacen before, where would you get such an unusual name?" She wanted to keep the conversation going even though every muscle in her bod wanted to lie down and sleep through hibernation.

Jacen shrugged. "Parents were crazy about weird and interesting names. Named my sis Julietty."

He looked at her. "And what about Sam? That's a boy's name where I come from..."

"Heh, it's short for... Something else... Anyway it's still a girls name" Sam chucked him a smile hoping to brighten the mood after the events that just happened. Sam had finally caught her breath back and felt even more tired than before, but she manged to stand up and look around.

"Anyway, we should keep moving", she walked over and offered him a hand. Maybe this could be more than a hostage situation and turn into a friendship? Like in the books? She pushed the thought out of her mind. Bah, impossible with someone like this and simply offered her hand to help him up.

He ignored her hand and somehow got to up by himself. His coughing had lessened. Good.

He returned the switchblade to his pocket. After that, he walked over and grabbed the schoolbag. He still held his axe in his hands as he looked at her from under his hood.

“You think you can walk alone now, without me holding your hand?” he said, with a hint of his smile.

Sam was slightly offended by him ignoring her hand, she retracted it back awkwardly, but it was understandable.

She felt weak and light headed but felt pressured to show some sort of confidence so she said "I can walk on my own" She remarked, but as he started walking over she stumbled a little bit and almost tripped over her own feet, "But I might need a cane" She smiled as she walked over and picked up a rather long stick to keep her steady. It might also be used as an emergency weapon if something happens...

Jacen shrugged. “Sure. As long as it helps you keep up, it’s fine.”

Now anxious to get a move on it, Jacen immediately sets off at a brisk pace. The further they got away from here, the better…

Sam had to hurry to keep up with Jacen's brisk pace, but with the stick assisting her, she manged to just keep up and not fall behind.

"So where were we going again?" Sam asked. She pondered her escape chances since she was free from Jacen's iron grip, but it seemed safer to just stay with him, considering he had all of her supplies and her only weapon.

Jacen noticed she kept up well, and he was glad for it. It had been a long time since he had spoken to a human being for more than one minute. He wasn't getting emotionally attached, he told himself, however, he did begin to enjoy the girl's company a bit.

"Further through the woods, to the high ground. After that,  who knows, if only there is food and shelter."

He shrugged. "Then, you can go your own way if you want to. No need for you to stick around after we get away from your friends."

Yes!, Sam though to herself, freedom at last! But as the though came to mind she felt as if she was doing something wrong, She was going to leave this Jacen on his own? She had grown to like his company, it was a change of pace from the boring days back at camp just hanging around twiddling her thumbs, her only useful skill being plant gathering. "Oh yeah, once we get to the top of the hill I guess I'll be in my way..." She detected a sadness in her voice so she quickly said "No reason to stay with you and I hope we can maybe split my supplies, so I don't starve on the way back home?" She hoped she hadn't hurt his feelings as they trekked towards the hill.
