Title: How do you see color?
Post by: Goblin Cat 😸 on December 30, 2012, 12:18:05 AM
I found this (http://www.xrite.com/custom_page.aspx?PageID=77&Lang=en) test... And as an artist, I figured it would be interesting to take! I scored a 4.

Apparently purples mess me up.

Doesn't this highly rely on your monitor and environment?

I seem to remember I got a score between 10-20 on my old laptop but got a score lower than 10 a few months later when I got my current laptop. I seem to be improving as well, because I don't think I was this low last time.

4 apparently I have slight trouble distinguishing hues between green and blue :P

I got 8. All were in the teal area. And now I am seeing bands of colors from staring at the screen for so long! They should time that test

Apparently, I see colors better in the morning than at night, which makes sense.
Last night I got a 15 and just now I got a 7. All seven were in the blue-green area (3 in the middle of the green and 4 in the middle of the blue).

I got a 54, which goes to suggest exactly what I always think. Contrast is something I do not have.

I remember doing this about a year ago...Scored a perfect...found it again few months ago...yet another perfect... Though personally I'd say the third blue row was what I had the hardest time with and it's also the one that took me the longest time.

Let's try this again...

And what I actually got ;)
Pretty proud of this as a photographer :D

I look at this test on my Samsung Note 10.1, the colors look kind of more vivid, on my laptop computer (Asus something) they look like they have less contrast, so I think like what Puncia said, it can depend on your monitor and environment. But hey after I did this my eyes went funny for about few minutes. I notice visual snow a lot, anyway but I kind of had that and it was like going from outside in the bright sun to a real dark room if know what I mean. I think I struggled more on the cooler colors, myself. So I wouldn't worry if your score isn't exactly perfect :3

I don't think 12 is bad at all, anyway. Plus, if you had distorted color vision, may be that'd be an artistic benefit :P.

Also, it's really near impossible to do this test on a tablet PC with no mouse/touchpad, seems the dragging on the page is near impossible with a stylus with Android but I can tell the colors by simply eyeing them up. Is your screen warm or cool? Seems cooler displays are better for a range of color, but warm is nicer on the eyes for like gaming or watching cinematic films, I suppose because all the colors blend together better (hence it's harder to determine their differences).

I got a 4 as well, with aquamarines (blue/green) being my trip-up. Sigh.

I wonder if that's something to do with display technologies.
Having said that, I don't look at many aquamarines, do you? May be some of us aren't so used to that range of colors?

I feel like if my photography were underwater photography, I'd be better at it. As it is, I'm mostly good with more natural colors, especially colors you would see on flowers.

Or may be of exotic beaches? Don't need to be "under" water :P

Test score hasn't changed since I took it when this was first posted. I scored 8. Four in purples, four in reds.

Yup. Sure is.

Might be your screen and not your eyes, then, or you don't look at those sorts of colors very often to tell.

I know that one, known it for years now. Computers aren't all the same, with my last computer, I always noticed the greens and yellows were duller and less vibrant than this one.

Mine (which a laptop) feels a bit more warmer on my eyes than, say, my mom's which looks really much brighter and thus cool on the eyes with less contrast I think. Might be helpful to change the color / brightness / contrast settings, as well, though. May be the color test can serve as useful to test this :3

Just proves it, I think most have the ability, effort of looking at it the right way and environment are the biggest hurdles :3

The screen and the environment indeed can make a HUGE difference in color perception.

However I believe this test is rather universal and made to fit most screens. All colors are midtone colors where contrast and gamma even on cheap monitors are reproduces the best (quality of shadows and quality differs a lot in high and low quality monitors and midtones are the easiest to display.

I think rather the contrast or gamma, what matters the most in this test is the vibrancy and saturation of the monitor. I believe though most modern monitors should have good enough reproduction of colors.

My point is that I believe it seems like the test is made so that the quality of your monotor should make an as small difference as possible.

Seems everyone would have perfect color vision with good focus (i.e. not random moving around without eyeing the hue gradient and/or some proportion of it) and a good monitor, though :3
