Title: Dragon Books! Looking for suggestions.
Post by: [Sov] on December 14, 2012, 05:19:43 AM
I'm looking for books about magic, and dragons. Magic or dragons is fine too. Fantasy ahoy! Please to be making the suggestions?

Well, it doesn't have much magic so to speak, but it is an amazingly well-written fantasy series in itself. Look up the Temeraire series if ever you can. The first book is called His Majesty's Dragon, second is Throne of Jade, third is Black Powder War, and then there are four more books after that, with another one to be released next year.

The series is about Captain William Laurence, a man hardened by the British navy during the Napoleonic wars. Dragons are a great asset in this retelling of history, being what makes or breaks each side of the war. Eventually, Laurence finds an egg and the dragon inside becomes very attached to him. And so, things change for Laurence incredibly. While Laurence might be more strictly official and stiff in demeanor, Temeraire is the perfect complement; overly curious, questions authority often, and desires to be regarded just as any man might. But, this is an alternate history, so keep that in mind.

I might also suggest the Inheritance Cycle, if you haven't read it. The cycle is very good. It has magic and dragons, albeit they have been diminished by the main antagonist. If you don't know, Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance are the books in order from first to last. Eragon is the main protagonist, a young boy from a farming village. To be honest, if I say too much more, it will spoil quite a lot. There is much to tie in when reading these stories, and you'll notice them as you go through the cycle.

I've read the first two and they are quite well-written indeed. I haven't picked up on it yet since I've been reading other series in between and I've been too busy (lazy) to read any books lately.

I might also suggest the Inheritance Cycle, if you haven't read it. The cycle is very good. It has magic and dragons, albeit they have been diminished by the main antagonist. +1 on this! It's more or less this series that got me into this genre (dragons and all that) and so far it remains my favorite series I've read! I can warmly recommend all 4 books!

I'm guessing no one has suggested these yet. I am putting the suggestions in reading order. I have added the official webpage for these books.

Eye of the Oracle (Oracles of Fire book 1) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/eye_of_the_oracle.htm)
Raising Dragons (Dragons in our Midst book 1) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/raising_dragons.htm)
The Candlestone (Dragons in our Midst book 2) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/the_candlestone.htm)
Circles of Seven (Dragons in our Midst book 3) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/circles_of_seven.htm)
Tears of a Dragon (Dragons in our Midst book 4) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/tears_of_a_dragon.htm)
Enochs Ghost (Oracles of Fire book 2) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/enochs_ghost.htm)
Last of the Nephilim (Oracles of Fire book 3) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/last_of_the_nephilim.htm)
Bones of Makaidos (Oracles of Fire book 4) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/bones_of_makaidos.htm)
Song of the Ovulum (Children of the Bard book 1) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/song_of_ovulum.htm)
From the Mouth of Elijah (Children of the Bard book 2) - Bryan Davis [Link] (http://daviscrossing.com/mouth_of_elijah.htm)

You could also read Eye of the Oracle (Oracles of Fire book 1) after Tears of a Dragon (Dragons in our Midst book 4) but I think it makes sense to read it first.

These are mostly about dragons, but there is some magic involved in them. The books span from Noah's Flood all the way to modern times... then (I think) even into the future.

Hope you enjoy them!

I think Eragon is a pretty decent dragon and magics book, It's actually really quite good, I'd try looking that over. The blurb is in the spoiler:
When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands. . . ."

Talon by Janet Lee Carey is another good one, more focused around the general medieval/fantasy genre, but does have some heavy ties with dragony folk. It's quite short, but fantastically written and well worth a look.

Also Cornelia Funke's novel Dragon Rider is an enjoyable read, although it's aimed at a younger audience.

Also mentioned by the others; The Inheritance Cycle and The Dragon Keeper series get a thumbs up.

I read the first book of the Jennifer Scales (https://www.goodreads.com/series/43000-jennifer-scales) series a year or two ago and thought it was pretty good. No idea what the rest of the series is like because I haven't gotten around to reading it yet though. It's about a girl who is a weredragon (and if I recall correctly, the rest of her family is, too). Worth a try if you might be interested.

Robert Asprin's "Dragon Deals... Or something along those lines. I haven't read it, but Asprin's is a considerably good writer. It's about this guy whose family owns a casino in New Orleans, and... He's a weredragon.

Also, there's Vladimir Nabokovs short story "the dragon," which I'm afraid doesn't end on a happy note. Tom Holt, also, is sure to have tackled dragons somewhere.

I barely skimmed over this, may of been mentioned already. Try the Wings of Fire series. All dragons, and some magic. The first book is The Dragonet Prophecy.
