Title: A "rational opinion"
Post by: Aoren Deringer on July 18, 2012, 04:56:38 PM
This... Makes me rather sad.

I know for a fact that the author of this little thing considers this to be a rational and educated view on the fandom, and finds it applicable.

Lovely.

I don't understand what makes you upset?
Could you please explain a little more?

Although the overall idea is positive, it is misinformed. I can see why you're disappointed. Assuming the fandom is entirely based on a fetish is a broad generalization and, in my opinion, it's something easy to see is not true if you just give it more than a glance at the surface.

Unfortunately, most webcomics (such as this one) have a tendency to poke fun at whatever they can get away with. Sometimes it's religions, sometimes it's foreign countries, sometimes it's a fandom. Although it's annoying when you're on the receiving end, they're mostly harmless. It's also a lot less offensive when they're insulting furries than when they're insulting Jews.

Considering that there is another XKCD comic (http://xkcd.com/629/) about furries, in which the creator seems to be informed about what a furry actually is, I don't think he has assumed anything. Rather, he is just making a joke out of both the sexual side of the fandom as well as those who troll it.

I understand what you're saying, and I see it can be confused as holding furries in a negative light, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to laugh at ourselves. Nobody can deny there is a sexual side to the fandom, but even if that isn't what "defines" a furry, it doesn't mean we can't have a sense of humor about it once in a while. The overall message of the comic is that even the most "devious" or "perverted" of furries aren't any more devious or perverted than any other devious or perverted non-furry, and that people should give them a break.

It's bad enough to waste time and energy getting upset over people who are actually intending to attack the reputation of furries, it's worse to waste time and energy getting upset at non-furries who mean well and try to put in a good word for us, even if they don't entirely "get it."

You make a great point, Zeph  ^_^ Its intentions were good and it was humorous. I think remembering to just laugh at ourselves every now and again is something good to keep in mind. I may have been overly critical in my original post and perhaps I should have given the artist more than a glance as well.

I saw this comic before :P
It's xkcd it's meant to be for comedic purposes :P
It's good to laugh at your own sub-culture sometimes, if you can think of it in a positive light then it's good :P

I don't think the actual creator really thinks furries are all about the adult side of the fandom :P
