Title: Furry Name?
Post by: Kittie on February 17, 2012, 01:50:54 PM
Okay I suck at this game...I need help coming up with a good name for my furry... I know, I know, I should be able to do it myself but I'm stuck! I mean honestly what DO you call a three foot feral purple cat/wolf with wings????  o.O Any ideas on what to call her, or where to go to do some research?

I think that you should stop thinking about how to name the species of the furry, but actually the unique name. Rather then trying to come up with a name for your furries species, you need to come up with a name for your furry. So, I'm thinking, think of some names that mean something to you, your online name, your real name, a name you thought up with in a story, and just mix and mash until you get a nice unique name for your furry. :P

I guess my post wasn't super clear the first time. :( I am looking to give her a name. Like a birth-name kinda deal, not species. As far as I'm concerned Winged Cat/wolf hybrid works fine for me. But I feel unknown without a real name...somehow Lupusfelina just doesn't cut it :/

Well, as a writer, I love to give names to characters that mean something. To me, the name is not just a series of letters that the character responds to, it's a description of that person or a joke about them. For example, I love to take Latin and build joke names out of combined and misspelled roots.

Viedonnia (a female deity created for a story) = "Viva" is Life in Latin, "Donner" is the verb to give in French.
Luc = Latin for "light"

Or I love to give names that mean something about the character itself that has nothing to do with a language. For example...

Alexander = "defending man"
Duncan = "Brown Warrior"
Mikhael = [Russian translation of the Hebrew Mikhail {probably misspelled}] which translates into a rhetorical question "Who is like God?"

I'd research names on a database or even just google search for a baby names website to do that. Take a few aspects of your character and find a name that you like!

If you want I can supply you with a database of first names and a database of last names. It's just an internet site that I use for ideas and it's usually fairly helpful.

Thank you Otebon. I actually figured out a name with the help of a kitten name site! With a dash of my own book character thrown in for good measure...you would think I would have this naming thing down but I'm very picky. I saw the name and I looked at my fursona, then I looked at me, then I looked back at my fursona and it just seemed to fit. I would have never thought to look through a database though. Thanks!
