Title: your creations/projects!
Post by: legolyle on January 21, 2012, 09:20:56 AM
As per discussion with another member-I'm making this thread for everyone to post pics of projects, past or present.

its pretty simple, anything you've created or built, post about it, and if you can, post a pic or pics! :D

If its made of Legos, post it!
If it's made of old magazines, newspapers, and confetti, post it!
If its a really cool powerpoint presentation, post it! (and do a bit of explaining please :P )
If its a cool undertaking of some sort that you think we'll find interesting, post it!

All of you non-artists, now is your chance to show off! do it! xD

I was going to post pics/details of my really cool 11th grade science fair, but I'm still looking for them, oh well! Another day!

So, I'll start off with my most recent project:

the rebuild of my 88' Toyota Supra engine.

bought this back at the end of last school year, just to have the engine blow up on me a month or so later, but instead of scrapping it, I took the hard road...and it took all my moneyz.

I did all of this myself, most without help, and I'm damn proud of it!
I could list the specs of everything, but that seems sorta monotonous.

as it sits today, literally:

Don't leave me hanging guys! leme see what you've done! :D

Nice work sir! Was meaning to ask if you rebuilt the engine for any particular reason.

I spend a bit of time working(playing) on cars but nothing I'd really call a project, however, if I find a good '90/91 Subaru Legacy it will be a different story.

I'm making a Guitar Hero game in VB.net, Wish I could show you pictures but my IDE has stopped working for some reason >.>

Amazing work on the car BTW, that's very impressive! :D

gotta get some pics man! post em as soon as you get it working again!

back in high school, a friend and I worked on making a game in Qbasic-based entirely off the DS/G.B.-advance game called "advance wars" (a turn based RTS)

needless to say, it ended up only half working, we could move the units around the screen, and even were able to attack-sometimes. Qbasic really wasn't a good language for that :P

and yeah, specifically, the head-gasket blew. Which is a common problem with these cars. :/

Hope you manage to find one!

Well, I can't post them here, so I'll be uploading them to my deviantART profile and then posting the LINKS here.
Okay, here's the first one!

Well... I'm not quite sure, actually.
The one that's second to the right took me the better part of the new verson of that "Klaatu Barada Nikto" movie that I can't remember the name of...
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL! Yeah, that's it...
Anyway... here's the next one!

One of my favorites, actually. I reversed the Indiana Jones plane and then added my own personal touch there, i.e. the elongated nose.

Didn't plan it that way, but you're right, he does.
Altough actually, the general is the guy standing directly in front of the camera.

Well I suppose I can talk about Project BONESETTER but it has, FYI, been suspended due to budget concerns :/
BONESETTER (which recieves its name because my database, being entirely flawwed, requires a one-word capitalised project title >.>) is my CLSS Combat Life Support System.
Now lets see if I can explain this *scratches head* without pictures or getting too far into the technical details xD

CLSS [BONESETTER] manifests itself as an undersuit designed to fit underneath Class 3 body armor comprising of three subunits. The first is a series of sensors/actuators arrayed as a skintight web/membrane system. Each membrane exists as a coagulant pack and each "thread" of the web senses lacerations. If, for example, a light lacerations is detected the unit will close the wound. If however, a deeper wound, such as a gunshot, is detected the coagulant is partially neutralised and then a discharge causes the newly-formed bandage to harden. This closes the wound to outside infection without denying access from medical personnel.
The second unit is the cardiovascular module. It operates as a series of [oh what are they called... They cut off blood flow to a certain area. Usually made of cloth... Very simple OH you know what I mean >.>] which deny blood flow to an area if a "gunshot"-type would is discovered, where applicable. It also includes an andrenaline drip and chest-compression device for use in emergency.
- Andrenaline drip may also be initiated remotely.
The final module is the battery/computer set. It's quite literally what the name suggests; Molded packs that contain the batteries as well as a general computer that commands the other subunits. It also includes a "dead-drop" GPS beacon and an alert system design to call field personnell atention to the wounded.

Yup that's project [M1] out of a current series of 15. It's also one of my favorites. :D

That's the idea, my friend xD Unfortunately it requires some rather advanced equipment to manufacture at any reasonable cost. So putting it out could be a laborious and very delayed process xD

Most cannot. I'm actually designing the machine that makes them as we speak xD I'm for customisation of equipment. Modularity only goes so far IMO

I started to build a Tesla coil in 2003 but I never finished it. During my free time freshman year of college I started reading more about Tesla coil design and construction. I built it over the course of the summer in 2008. Worked the first time too. Ha! Over the years it hasn't changed much. I've only made little changes and additions.

This is how it appeared in 2008:
Since then I've replaced the original saltwater capacitors (in the yellow bin) and made two new toroids (the silver thing on top).

Run about two weeks ago:
The arcs in this picture are only 24" or so. The whole thing consumes about 1kw of power, less than your average hairdryer.

I like the loud arcs, I like the entire design, construction, and troubleshooting process, I like how somewhat simple materials can be put together in the right way to make mini-lightning, and I like that it's based on century old technology. lol

Sweet.
Something that I enjoy doing is making my own Lego figures. And I don't mean just the usual configurations. The arms can be switched if you're careful.

When I finally have the time, I'll upload more of those images to deviantART.

However, right now, my main priority should be sleep.
Good night.

Ah I love tesla coils :D
I'm working on a project (my Directed Electromagnetic Field Generator) which uses a similar process in the preliminary stages.

And I totally agree on your point with materials. It's always funny how on their own they are so limited... But with a little help, a little desgin... The possibilities are endless.

Well I now have an interesting project to work on thanks to a friend. He has a Vauxhall (Opel) Corsa hatchback, which he wants converted to a pick-up to take his quad. :D

So today we got cutting his car up. (which I really enjoyed because I HATE Vauxhalls).

Before.
http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4383.jpg (http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4383.jpg)

After.
http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4397.jpg (http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4397.jpg)

The first stages on the new bulkhead. Still in a rough state to be smoothed off welded properly and painted.
http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4405.jpg (http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z413/Luggz694/DSCF4405.jpg)

But that isn't all we are doing, we are also converting it to rear wheel drive. Which will require building a tunnel for the new propshaft and moving the fuel tank, changing the gear box and running gear.
Title: Re: your creations/projects!
Post by: legolyle on February 26, 2012, 09:14:00 PM
dude. that. is. AWESOME!!!!

what an endeavor!

what kind of motor are you going to be using to make it rear wheel drive and all? Seeing as the current one is likely designed for FWD.
that's quite some fabrication that's gonna be required no? I mean, you might have to relocate stuff in the engine bay, and make new engine mount locations-maybe move the radiator...build the transmission tunnel...all that.
:O
I'd love to see the finished RWD result though. PLEASE! :D
Title: Re: your creations/projects!
Post by: Luggz on February 26, 2012, 09:26:15 PM
Well my friend used to be a coach builder so fabrication is no bother however the reposition of the fuel tank could be an issue. Currently it sits across the width of the car where our prop will be. T_T

The engine can remain as is. Its a 2ltr turbo all we need to do is get a new gearbox (type 9) and bellhousing, for the running gear we can use the RWD Calibra stuff since the only differance is the gearbox as already mentioned. :)

It's also getting a roll cage from front struts to rear struts so the dash is also getting ripped out.

It will be a long project but will hopefully be ready in a few months time.

My current project:

Is my mountain bike....

i've recently repainted and rebuilt the front forks...(they used to be white)

Brand new pink handlebars too! as well as brand new tires, same as what I got now but current ones are worn.

And here's my bike currently...with the back up forks on it....I'd rather keep these forks...but 1) the're  a bit heavy 2) they don't have the kind of adjustment i'm wanting (which is what my other fork has)

they have been lowered though.... because the fork angle/rake  was too much/steep for the frame I have and I was at risk of snapping the headtube(Where the fork attaches onto the bike frame)

here's what it looked like before adjusting the forks.Notice how they look"longer"

When the weather is decent again,I’ll be stripping all the parts off the frame and sanding it downto repaint it….I wouldsandblast the frame…but it’s aluminium and unless it’s set up properly…paint won’t stick to it very well..so I’m just sanding it by hand to get rid of the clear coat on it and rough up the paint under neath and to feather out and paint scratches/scuffs/blemishes that are already in the paint…and there’s quite a few. No not from crashes…just from riding, as well as cable rub, it’s only a cheap frame…($100 or so for just the frame…nothing else)

I’ll be painting it Plum Purple…..similar to the ever popular Plum Crazy purple of the Hemi Cuda.

And it’ being an  Iron Horse brand bike…..I’m nicknaming it Twilight Sparkle, because it’ll be purple and pink

And I've put about $1,000 worth of parts in to it in to it this year….but never paid that much..I only paid about $450 some thigns I Bought used and some thigns I bought new….and got one hell of a deal on the new stuff.(Used stuff was a great deal too :P)

Rear shock: “Fox Float RP3”  Paid $100 -used/almost new (Worth $300 new)

Hydraulic Disc Brakes: “Avid Juicy 5s” Paid $190 –used/almost new  (Worth $400 new)

Cranks and BB: “Race Face Evolve XC” Paid $120 -new (Worth $300) (got them on sale new in box)

Handlebars: “RaceFace Deus (pink)” Paid $30 (new) (Worth $60) (got on sale)

and my basement seems to be warm enough to paint...I'll just put on a respirator when I do it, it being a confined space and all..

This bike isalways a work in Progress...as I"m always changing some part on it....but it's almost perfect....new chain is all I need

and when I get a job, I plan on building another bike up...

Twightlight Sparkle is looking impressive. Just looking at these photos is making me wish I hadn't got rid of my bike (altough you are far more serious about it than me) but it got to the point where it rarely was used and I wasn't really fit enough.

Do you compete or is it all just for fun? (or both I suppose)

So guys, its about time I post here :P
now, disclaimer, I DID NOT MAKE MOST OF THIS CAR, like, try 98%. This was a team effort, and I joined late. I wanted to share it anyway, I love it.

This is a formula SAE car. It's basically a go kart powered with a Honda motorcycle engine-I forget the displacement, but we estimate when done it'll put out about 70-90 hp. The car itself (with driver) will weigh less than 800 pounds. Which means, it will get from 0-60 faster than most supercars.
It was/is being built by students from my university, designed to go into competition. At this competition, automakers tend to be looking around at the best teams-so there is a drive to do well ;P

The amount of work, talent, drive, and pure engineering that went into making this car is unbelievable. The work required is out of this world crazy-and the cost is high.

but, the idea behind the competition is simple-build the car, make sure it meets minimum specification and follows all rules, and compete with it in a series of different competitions ranging from fuel economy to an all out timed track trial.

here are some pics:

and finally, the car was started for the FIRST TIME tonight :D just a few hours ago, and I got it on camera. I was the only one to capture the moment, and they dubbed it the "JFK tapes" XD as this was the first start and IDLE of the car. It sounds beautiful :D

UNF Formula SAE first engine start up/idle! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGtFA78Ln-o#ws)

I can take very little credit for this car to be honest-but I did help them with a bit of machining and unskilled labor :P

An unlikely hobby for a demon, but whatever.
Someday this is going to be a blanket for my mother.

Fun note: It's a wide blanket, so each row takes about 30 minutes to complete, each color stripe consists of two rows, so each color stripe takes an hour to do. You're looking at almost 10 hours of work, and it's only about 1/4th of the way done lengthwise.

well, I went to pick up a part of a roll cage for my friends Vauxhall Corsa pick-up last night because it wouldn't fit in his car... it only just fit in mine and I had an hour and a half drive like this. I went straight from work and had all my work stuff with my which got thrown about the street as we fought to get the cage in.

The destruction was aided by the fact I didn't bother emptying my boot after work and that I had Landrover springs, shockies and a hi-lift jack in there too.
