Title: Critiques
Post by: [Sov] on September 04, 2011, 09:12:30 AM
My new avi is the most recent drawing I stayed up doing, tomorrow whenever I wake up, I plan on giving it a background and starting a different one. I'm looking for critiques though, as I'm a new anthro artist. I've been drawing horses all my life, but not like this.

Attached the file for people who want to look at it bigger. It was done with colored pencils.

You're doing very well so far, but I'd be careful with the eyes so they don't look painted on. Remember that eyelids are fleshy and have a shape too.

Examples:

I've also noticed that if you rub an area you've coloured with soft tissue/toilet paper, it gets a lot smoother. You could try that out if you want a smoother look, however you've done great so far with it.

Thanks. I'm trying to get more of the cartoon look with my art, but it's hard with the eyes. I struggle especially with eyes, and mouths.

I didn't, I'm just pointing out that if you want a cartoony look with an easy way to draw mouths and eyes, then that's the style you want to look at.

This is very true.

I'm not 100% sure where to go with my art. I've been drawing feral horses and wolves since I was wee, but they've only had an extremely REAL look to them. I think it's best to probably play around with it a bit and find a style that I like the best. May it be manga style, cartoon style, or realistic style....but so far through looking at other peoples art I find that the manga/cartoon style is the most appealing to me for avatars, or comic strips. Though for fursuits I prefer the more realistic looking types. There are just so many directions an artist can go!

I've seen others being prompted to draw character studies. Maybe you could try and draw your fursona with different angles, poses and expression, one study for at least the three styles mentioned. At least that will give you good practice.
