Title: 24XX
Post by: flames on August 24, 2011, 12:21:28 PM
Flames clutched his battered cloak closer to his body as the wind roared around him. Teeth barred and a slight growl escaping his throat, he fights to keep on moving forward as he makes through the wasteland between the cities. As dangerous as his journey has been so far, he considers himself thankful that he knows these safe routes where the air is still just barely clean enough to choke down and the radiation levels are low enough to prevent him glowing green.
Trying to ignore the wind blasting rocks, sand and other debris at him and taking care not to slip as he climbs up and down the countless hills made of rubble that span the landscape, he ponders on his destination: Sanctuary City. Perhaps the oldest and smallest of the cities under the Emperor's rule, it was also the furthest away from the others and one that had relatively few Officials enforcing their power upon it. So far away from the rest of civilisation, it found itself rarely getting visits from the Emperor's Army and it was often the last stop wanted men and women made before they tried their luck in the outside world, searching desperately for those few towns and villages that remained standing.

How appropriate that after all these years, the first city he should return to would be the last one he left, he mused. Glancing down at the holstered blaster by his thigh and with a glance out of the corner of his eye to the weapon strapped to his back, he adjusted his cloak once more to conceal his weapons as the wind died down. The silence was deafening.
A deep breath and his eyes were set on the buildings that loomed in the distance, mostly archaic and in need of repair, but standing with a proud defiance to the world nonetheless. A small smile graced his lips as he made his way to the city that had proved its worth to rebels in the wars and would now find a purpose once more.

Things were just beginning...

Chronin's ocular senses kicked in as his body finished the self-diagnostics that had started a day after the container was breached. He took a few seconds to activate his claws, and even less to cut his way out of the covering. His sensors detected that the room was warmer than what was considered the norm for storage, and soon pointed out the openings in the ceiling and the very ajar door. His nostril ports made a sound similar to a vacuum cleaner before stopping to analyze the air he just took in.
Smog, hints of neurotoxin , but breathable nonetheless. Radiation levels acceptable for optimum performance. In the quiet of the ruined storage building, the thudding of metal against pavement was broadcasted in every corner as Chronin took his first steps since activation and his last steps out of the building that created him...

Boone choked down the last gulp of his "purified" water. He had been camped out on a hillside near sanctuary city for the past two nights, wondering whether or not he would find the resistance here, or if everything he had heard was just nonsense. Either way, he had to enter the city now, with little food and no water, there was no way he could last any longer out here by himself. He tore down the tarp he was using as a makeshift tent and stuffed it into his backpack, hoisting it over his shoulder, picked up his guitar case, and headed toward the city.

Flames paused, still a little short of the city boundaries. Whilst unofficially Sanctuary City was most people's best bet at enduring the oppression (short of trekking into the outside world and hunting down the hidden settlements of course), officially it was still a city underneath the Emperor's rule. This meant that although some buildings were bordering on ancient and the Emperor's power was fairly weak here, the city did possess a more modern protective wall neat its entrances which had guards overseeing those who entered and left.
To say such occurences was rare would be an understatement. Trade did occur between the cities and supplies did have to arrive, but Sanctuary City was so far from the others that travellers were somewhat rare and suspicious. Whilst other people may be able to get by the guards with official paperwork or simply by "dropping a few credits whilst the guard looks the other way", Flames could hardly do either, being away from the cities so long. What few credits he had would likely not suffice to both bribe the guards and get further supplies, but this was hardly the biggest issue.

Indeed, the larger issue was the fact that he was approaching from the exact opposite direction of the other cities, near one of the much smaller gates to the city. This would naturally gather attention and he couldn't trust the guards even if he bribed them to keep quiet. As the Anthro remained out of sight, musing over his options he wished that he had been able to procure one of those stun weapons that seemed to be popular amongst Officials and the guards.
Unfortunately he had to make do with what he had and thankfully there was only one guard. Sitting down behind a dead tree, out of sight of the one bored looking guard by the gate, Flames worked on a plan to gain entrance with as little fuss as possible...

Chronin's eyes adjusted to the light coming in, quickly shrinking to beads of blue as the landscape became visible to him. The second air test had him revise the previous statement of breathable, and his personality counted himself lucky for not needing to breathe like the humans and anthros he was designed to recognize. He continued to through the land, his GPS looking for him before linking up to his HUD. He could see the map giving him a trail to a place called "Unknown City", and only half a mile to go before he would be in sight of it.

Boone approached the front gates, they weren't impressively enormous, but they were still imposing. As he approached the gate one of the guards held out a hand announcing, halt, state your business.
Boone simply pulled out his Badge from Teravale (The village he used to be chief of enforcement at, before it was destroyed). The guards bravado faltered for a second, obviously Boone outranked him. But he still needed to check.
What's in the case.
It's a heavy caliber Mercenary rail gun. He said sarcastically, what do you think it is. The guard let him pass, sometimes there were perks to still being considered an official, although if the guard had checked closer, he would have been able to tell the ID was outdated.

Flames' idea of "as little fuss as possible" apparently involved throwing a rock against part of the wall near the gate the guard was stationed at. The noise and movement in the corner of the guard's vision led to him abandoning his post and looking too and fro for what had caused the disturbance in his otherwise dull day. Just as he about to discount it as his imagination and was returning to his post, a single shot of plasma sounded somewhere behind him and impacted the ground a little way in front of a dead tree.
The guard readied his own MK-III in one hand and a stun baton in his other. Moving cautiously and looking for anything out of the usual, he moved towards the tree. A sound from near a pile of debris past the tree caused the guard to focus on the debris and what could be hiding near it, totally ignoring the tree as he moved past it and-

THUNK! The guard's eyes rolled into the back of his head and he collapsed onto the ground. Flames stood behind him, the hilt of his melee weapon in his hand but with the weapon clearly deactivated. "Pfft, didn't think that would actually work", he thought to himself as he stepped away from the tree, glad that the guard hadn't seen that the cause of the disturbance of the debris was actually Flames just throwing another rock at a rather unstable piece of rubble in the pile.
Thankful that the guards clearly hadn't been trained to call for assistance when something suspicious was occurring, that this gate was one of many without surveillance and that the tricked man hadn't been wearing any head protection, Flames decided what to do with the unconscious body. Upon looking back on the sheer insanity of what he had just done he decided to continue with his madness, half-carrying and half-dragging the man back to his post where he quickly found several bottles of alcohol near where the guard had been standing. Obviously it was a very boring job as several bottles were already empty. The Anthro slumped the guard's body against the his post, scattered some of the bottles near him and spilled one of the non-empty bottles on the ground around the guard and onto his uniform before leaving the half-empty bottle near his hand.

"Perfect", the fox thought to himself. The guard was probably a little tipsy already and with the scene like this nobody will believe him even if he does remember anything unusual. And with his ridiculously unlikely to succeed plan actually a success, he continued into Sanctuary City, weapons and what few supplies remained hidden beneath his traveller's cloak.

Chronin continued following the map that was set as a sandstorm obscured his distant vision. He sprayed air out of his jets, keeping the sand from getting under his armor and as far away from his inner circuitry as possible. He turned on his motion sensor, then turned it off as the sandstorm had completely covered the display in 'movement'. I don't think I would be designed with a motion sensor this sensitive if sandstorms were common. Most logical reason is that my activation has been delayed for quite some time. Most troubling...

Boone sat alone in the room he had rented until he could find the rebels. The only problem was he had no idea how to find them. All he had heard was that a large amount of them were somewhere in this city. He scratched the fur around his bionic eye, why does it always itch there, he thought idly to himself. He stared at the bionic half of his body. None of the parts used to rebuild him were new, most were rusty to the point where it blended in with his fur, but he liked it. These additions made him better, especially his eye, which made him more accurate with his Mercenary rail gun then anyone out there, or so he liked to think.
Well at least getting here was succesful, he thought while laying back on the creaky spring mattress, I'll just have to see what I can do tomorrow.

As Flames entered the city he was quite thankful that the area near this entrance was empty of other people, who might be a bit taken back by his gaping. To see the city from the distance was one thing, to hear about it was another, but to be inside it was completely different.
He'd gotten so used to the small towns and quaint tiny villages and the endless wastelands with the occasional piece of somewhat healthy landscape still intact...he'd quite forgotten just how large the cities were. And to think that in the past they would have been so much larger, so much more alive...

He shook his head and returned to a fairly neutral expression. Truth be told it had to have been at least 10 years since he'd last been in any of the cities and he was pretty much making it all up as he went along. Sure, he had what information he had managed to gleam from the countless settlements outside the Emperor's control, but that information didn't amount to much. Most homes had been destroyed or struck by natural disaster, some were reduced to but a few people slowly dying and others wanted to completely ignore what was out there.
Only a few wished to do something about it and out of those even fewer actually had any ties to resistance groups. The information was outdated to be sure, but Flames knew that somewhere in this city, the main resistance movement hid and planned. He was unsure how to best go about finding them or convincing them he was trustworthy, as there were indeed a good few Anthros and Androids who were actually spies...just as there would be the occasional human who saw what his fellow man was doing as wrong and decide to join the resistance.

"Still", he mused to himself as he headed closer to more active parts of the city and nobody took any notice of him. "I should worry about that after I've got some more supplies."
He made his way deeper into the city to where there seemed to be a small marketplace of sorts...

I hate cities, Boone thought to himself while traveling the streets, Too many humans, too many prying eyes. He checked the piece of paper he was holding again, confirming the address for the 10th time. He had only been in Sanctuary for 2 days, and already he was hating it, but earlier in the day he had finally caught a break in searching for the resistance. His sour demeanor and attitude must have screamed Anarchists because he was approached, subtly, by another anthro, "Pain and suffering shouldn't be a common occurance, Emperor Draconis sits on his throne letting the land die. Change is coming though, come here if you're interested," he had said, passing Boone a slip of paper with an address and time on it. "We're fighting for a better tomorrow brother," and with that he was gone.

Katayida was near the exit of her underground dwelling, and could hear the howling winds above the wooden shelter doors. The sound alone sent chills running through her spine, but she had made a promise, and intended to keep it. She lifted her backpack up to resettle it on her shoulders because she knew there was a few miles to trudge along in the sand before she got to Sanctuary City. She toyed with her bracelet nervously before pulling the collar of her coat up to protect her neck from the roaring sands above. "Sand storms are always fun," she thought, but wasn't very happy to be encountering one "maybe it will lighten up by the time I get there." She pulled her jacket closed, and tugged at her collar once more before opening the tunnel doors and entering above ground. She squinted, because though it was hazy it was still brighter than her eyes were used to. Gripping her staff tightly in her right hand, and holding her coat up to block the sandy wind from attacking her eyes and face she moved towards the direction of the city.

Kay knew there was some sort of resistance forming in Sanctuary to rebuild a better tomorrow, but wasn't really sure where to begin looking for them once she arrived, only whispers of it had traveled through the tunnels. She kept moving forward now using her staff as more of a walking stick to help her navigate the dunes, and desolate terrace. Finally the borders of the city were in plain sight "dealing with the guards isn't going to be easy" she thought, and pondered what tactic she would use to get past them. She only knew stories of Sanctuary City as her family spoke highly of it, and often, and how wonderful it could be. Though she knew other stories of it being a horrid place, not much better than any other city, only with less radiation. Pffft, as if that mattered to Katayida anyway.

Katayida walked to the entrance of the city, expecting there to be gates, bridges, motes, and lots of guards. Instead, she was shockingly surprised to find one guard sitting outside in a slump at the gate passed out from drinking too much booze! The mare chuckled, "well this is a lot easier than I thought it would be." The guard stirred, "Wha-ah-whozzare?" he slurred and tried to sit up rubbing his head, and looking more disoriented than she'd ever seen any individual before. "Erm...I" Katayida stuttered, and decided to just move past once the guards head slumped over onto his chest again.

Chronin arrived at the city roughly the same time Katayida had, even though they had made no contact the entire time. He however, was not able to sneak in as he stood over most of the inhabitants, and his coloration only enhanced his uniqueness. In a minute or two, three guards had pulled him out of the crowd of refugees and merchants and held him at gun point by the walls.

"Look what we have here... a war-time android. Boss would like to have him rewired." Another guard looked at him as if he was an idiot.

"Of all the people you want to give more power to, you want the Boss to have this one?! To heck with that, lets make him ours!" Chronin stood there, his eyes running a scan of all the equipment, then giving the emotional response of an inward sigh, he slowly shook his head.

"Your weapons are in poor condition at best, I would be amazed if your pistol could even scratch my pa-" A bullet pinged off his armor, and he glared at the guard with the gun.

"Just shut up and stand there, that is an order!" Chronin looked at him with curiosity, but he still had to respond to hostile actions...

The guards jumped back and the crowd panicked as Chronin shot jets of fire from his body and effectively immolated himself and everything within three feet of him.

"Your authority does not concern me..."

Meredith stood in front of the city limit, the mighty walls showing nothing but hostility. As she walked towards the gate, two guardsmen came out, eying her, before confronting her.
"Now what is such a pretty lady doing out her alone? You know it isn't safe?" One of the guardsmen said with a smirk. Meredith opened her mouth to begin speaking but was cut off.
"More importantly, how is such a pretty thing going to get into our city?" The other guardsmen let out a chuckle, Meredith rolled her eyes as she began to got through a small pouch. "I'm sorry mama, we can't take your money... but we wouldn't mind finding some other way for you to repay the favor." The guardsmen reached to touch Meredith's face, but she wouldn't have it. She grabbed the mans hand, pulling him towards her before twisting his wrist and pushing him back snapping his wrist with him falling to the floor. The other guardsmen, surprised by the female, raised a baton to strike the women down, but he had her Mp4 that was strapped around her covered by her coat pointed at his face.
"If you move I will shoot you. Now you simple minded fools, look at what is in my hand." She and her barrel eyed down the man, her words as cold as her eyes. In her hand was an official contract that granted Meredith into any city until the contract expired. The man nodded, and then Meredith proceeded to walk into the city with a large grin on her face. Now was the fun part, she were to locate the resistents grop and pay the leader a visit.

Flames had been faring relatively well, all things considered. He'd managed to acquire some further supplies and he'd been able to keep a low profile so far. He'd heard some disturbances in the distance and although he wished to investigate and possibly lend his aid, he grudgingly reminded himself that he still had to recover from his long journey and some previous wounds. Although mostly healed they still flared up from time to time and he had to admit that his rationing had kept him a bit weaker than usual.
"That's one problem I don't have to worry about now, though." The cloaked anthro thought to himself as he rested against an alleyway way in one of the quieter parts of the city. Sure he was now broke but he had managed to acquire a cheap portable water purifier and a good supply of old food tabs. Sure the former probably wouldn't be able to make entirely pure water, but he was fairly certain it would at least make water drinkable, if not pleasant. On a similar vein, the food tabs weren't the most pleasant or filling things to eat in the world, but they did make for a good supply of daily nutrients and remained safe to eat for a very long time.

A voice shook him from his thoughts. A quick glance around him confirmed that he was no longer alone in the alley. A few humans were around him and none of them bothered to hide their clear contempt for the anthro. One of them who looked particularly vicious approached him and sneered. "We don't like your sort in OUR territory, you got that you sneaky fox?"
The man, who appeared to be their leader, made a show of drawing his weapon, a battered MK-II, as the others also levelled their weapons at the cloaked fox. Flames didn't even flinch, although an eyebrow was raised at the crude metal clubs a few of the humans held and the arm cannon that revealed one of their group as an android.
"I apologise gentleman on intruding upon your area and I must regretfully inform you all that if it is money you seek, I have none to spare." The cloaked figure said calmly and politely with only a hint of amusement in his voice.

Whatever they had been expecting, it wasn't the calm reaction that met them. Just as the leader's frown deepened and he was about to squeeze this trigger to give the Anthro a piece of his mind, Flames revealed his fangs in the briefest of smiles as he blurred into motion, his crimson eyes burning all the time. There was chaos, confusion and a few shots were fired before the last body hit the ground.
The fox stopped, caught his breath for a moment and glanced down at the unconscious humans before his eyes flickered over to where the android remained standing, clutching what had previously been his arm cannon, which was currently lying on the ground. She was almost indistinguishable from a human were it not for the sparked wires and leaking fluid that the remains of her limb revealed. Fairly young in appearance and clearly she'd been having a hard time in life judging from the numerous cuts and minor burns on her synthetic skin.

Flames approached her slowly as she flinched and shuddered, unable to move, still staring with a mixture of horror and awe at the bodies laid out before her. As the anthro came closer she clenched her eyes shut. Time passed. She opened her eyes again and the fox was gone. She turned around to see that he'd just wordlessly walked past her. He stopped and simply stated "They should be sore and angry but mostly unharmed when they wake up. I'd suggest that you don't stay around unless you want them to harm you further."
He looked back with a little gleam in his eyes and simply said to her with a hint of mischief "Now would be a great time to taste freedom, huh?" before he turned back and vanished off into the city. The android remained still for another few minutes before she decided to take the stranger's advice and leave her tormentors who had captured her but a few weeks ago.

As for Flames himself, he was glad he was able to get away with that and avoid using lethal force. The idiots had little more than reinforced kevlar and their clothes for protection and thus the simple thugs were little match for one who had fought for his life with some of the wild, mutated beasts that roamed the more polluted areas far from any city. None of them were trained for combat in the slightest and probably hadn't even run afoul of the guards before, simply choosing to do their activities out of sight and with minorities.
Even the incompetent guard Flames had dealt with to get in could have probably dealt with them in a flat-out fire fight. And with that thought and a quick wish that the android got to safety, Flames searched for somewhere else where he could rest undisturbed...

Katayida peered cautiously around the city, small disturbances seemed to be a common thing, but seeing lush parts of the city was also very alluring to the equine. She spotted a crowd of humans who appeared to be in similar height as her, and she decided it was time to blend in as much as possible so she could avoid one of those small disturbances. As she walked along with them through the city streets a small human girl looked up at her, after noticing her hooves. She was holding her Mother's hand, and then grasp onto it with both hands tugging just a bit. The Mother looked down at her child who pointed at Kay, and the child's mother pulled her away quickly. Katayida nervously pulled her backpack up on her shoulders and kept moving, now wishing that she had brought something with a hood to cover her head. Maybe at least something to hold her ears down, and make her less noticeable as an anthro. There was no hiding her hooves though, they didn't make shoes for horses that weren't made of some sort of metal, mostly left-over titanium deposits, which Kay wanted none of. At least, no one had convinced her they were important thus far.

Noticing a small merchant booth tended by a seated cloaked being, she cut through the crowd making her way to the booth. "We don't have any" a raspy male voice said from under a deep hood. Katayida was confused, "but I didn't ask for anything..." A hand was raised from beneath the booth to shoo her away, but Kay noticed flecks of black fur sticking out from under the sleeve, another anthro, she thought. "Look at me" Kay's voice shook slightly, and the hooded shadowed figure moved his head up just a few inches. A set of green glowing eyes opened only slightly, and the figures head tilted back downward. "You fool," the mysterious anthro said "if the guards don't get you, a corrupt human will." He warned her sternly, "you need to find shelter, and rest...." he paused looking back up at her for only a moment, "you only carry a walking stick?" Kay looked down at her left hand where she was gripping onto the wrapped portion of her staff tightly, "I have a pocket knife as well." The mysterious figure shook his head which was still tilted down in order to conceal his face under shadows."You have come to Sanctuary for a reason, I suspect?"he asked her in a flat tone. The grey mare toyed with her bracelet again, feeling it's grooves and the inscription, "I made a promise."
The figure hunched over and she could hear some things clanging around in a cabinet under his booth returning back, and reaching his arm out to her again. His claws were filed incredibly short, but she could tell he was some kind of canine. He handed her a piece of folded paper,"put that away. Read it later. For now you must go find a place to rest. The day is coming."He pointed to his right, and then motioned a bit to the left."There's a motel two blocks down and in an alley to left, it's run by humans, but they are very friendly, or greedy, I haven't decided yet. In the mean time, I recommend getting yourself a hood, and a better weapon....you'll need it here if you want to survive. Now go." Katayida placed the folded paper into her coat pocket, and nodded in thanks to the mystery anthro. She slipped back into another crowd of people, and then ducked into the alley that she was told to go to. Opening the front door she was greeted by a human."Hello, may I help you?"a kind face said to her, but she noticed that the human female couldn't help, but stare at her ears. "I need a room," Katayida said to her. The woman handed her two gold keys on a ring, "12b", was on the tag. "Pay or trade, when you leave"the woman said. Kay nodded, and walked in the direction of her room. Upon entering she bolted the door, and threw her backpack onto the bed. Taking off her coat she grabbed the folded piece of paper. She sat on the bed staring at the floor for a moment, and then unfolded the paper, it had an address, a date, and a time on it. She refolded it sitting it down on her night stand before closing her eyes for some much needed rest.

Meredith pushed her way through the crowded, she was filling a bit woozy, she hadn't eaten in a while. When in the city, she trusted very little places for food, being such an eye catching women, she had to watch out for all kinds of things. In the center of town she found the store she was looking for, it was a "Dr. Fiend" store, one of the few franchise in the world.
"Hello" a android man greeted her as she entered, ", can I help you?"
"The sum of the square root of a square is X" There was a silence as the android processed the words it had heard.
"One 011011 coming right up" The android smiled before going in the back. In about a minute an old man came down along with the android.
"Well I'll be, if it isn't little oh Meredith." The human was balding and had a come over, his voice was ruff like a smokers.
"Hello Doctor, its been a long time." Her hard faced melted as she finally felt as if she could let up her rough physique.
"Child." The old man said as he opened his arms to hug her, and she embraced him. "Now tell me, what is up, why are you here?"
"I took a bullet in my left arm and it hasn't properly healed, I wanted to know if you could take a look at it."
"Of course." The old man smiled. He moved towards some supplies as he began to ramble around in them, "Now I'm out of morphine, all these drug fiends seemed to of robbed me." The door of the shop opened and a little bell rang, Meredith barley even glanced at them. "Just go to up and I'll hook you right up-"
"We told you to give us what we wanted!" The person that just entered screamed as he raised arm raveling a small range gun pointing at the doctor. Meredith's eyes widened as she swung her arm to knock the goon flat as fast as she could. She felt her hand connect as the sound of a gun being fired filled her ear drums, she released her lethal electric current into the goon making sure he wasn't going any where.
"Doctor!" Meredith screamed as she changed to look back to make sure he was ok, his face was a bit surprised and covered in some cuts, but other wise ok. The bullet had changed directions as Meredith hit the man, breaking some glass above the doctor.

Boone looked back at the paper for the fifth time confirming the address and time. He was at the right place, and the right time, but there didn't seem to be anyone there. He was in an Alley between two buildings, both looking very insignificant and the sun was starting to get low on the Horizon. Suddenly an Anthro Wolf lurked out of the shadow and looked Boone over, he slipped Boone a piece of paper. It read looked like an old War poster asking for volunteers for service, at the bottom was a short note, Welcome aboard Freedom Fighter, the resistance needs fighters, but also recruiters, go throughout the city and see who you can find. It then had an address to send new recruits to. When he looked up to yell at the other Anthro for such a lame job, he realized he was gone.
Boone stormed out of the allyway furious. He wanted to fight, not recruit. He stormed down the streets for a few minutes before finally deciding that it must just be part of a new recruits job. But where was he going to find someone to recruit. That was when he ran into another Fox anthro, who had seemingly just come from a scuffle in a nearby ally where several humans were laying unconscious. He smiled at his good fortune.

The three guards that stopped him soon had others join in, totaling six guards against one war android. To the onlookers, it seemed that even though the guards surrounded the dragon robot, they were still very outmatched.

"Turn off your fire jets or we will fire upon you!" The guard yelled, his voice obviously the only thing that held any trace of fortitude. Chronin simply turned to the guard and held his hand out before immolating him in a quick series of fireballs. The others simply lost their nerve at the sight of one of their own dropping to the floor and turning to ash in seconds.

"You will walk away from this if you simply put your weapons down." Some followed his statement, and promptly ran back to the gates they were guarding. Only a few remained to fight on, and die trying.

Flames' quest for a place to rest was once more interrupted, this time by a black fox who seemed to be smiling at something. The fellow anthro was a little unusual in that they appeared to have android parts grafted to themselves but that in itself wasn't suspicious. During the war people with mechanical replacements or implants were fairly common and a good few older folk still maintained their original replacements. Even after the war, the harsh reality of life meant that damage was still done and the useful tool that was technology was always there to offer a solution.
What was suspicious however was the fact that this anthro clearly wished to speak with him, the smile he wore on his face and the scrap of paper he held in his hands.

The cloaked fox didn't say anything, he just stopped, turned to look the other anthro in the eyes and gave an expression that clearly translated to a "Yes? Can I help you?"

A few hours later Katayida had awoken from her nap. It was still daylight, but would be nearing darkness soon. She decided that it would be in her best interest to heed the words of the shadowed anthro she met earlier in the day, and get a hood, or at the very least something to hold her big floppy horse ears down. It was never something comfortable for her to do, but since she had witnessed a few of the fighting outbreaks in the city upon her arrival she realized that she could be killed very easily without getting the proper defensive materials. How to obtain such things would be more of a challenge though. Currency wasn't much of an issue as she had plenty of it, but she knew nothing but tales of Sanctuary, and the mix of the tales seemed to be truer than she had hoped. She looked at the folded piece of paper on her night stand once again, picking it up and placing it into her pocket. This time she'd only take her backpack and her knife with her. The staff and her coat would stay in the room she was renting. Being sure that the curtains were closed, she double checked that she had her keys, the locks were secure, and that she had the folded note in her pocket.

After leaving the motel, and crossing into a neighboring alley way trying to remain unseen by most, she found a clothing shop. There was an older gentleman behind the counter and two women in the back of the store who all appeared to be workers. Kay once again toyed with her bracelet nervously, and headed to the coat section. She found a black coat with a hood that looked pretty similar to the one that the mysterious anthro was wearing earlier. Eying it for size she didn't spend any time trying it on, and noticed that there were a variety of headbands that humans used to hold their hair back when they didn't want it in their faces. Katayida picked one up and stretched it as wide as it would go, because she would use it to hold her ears down, not hold her mane back. Upon looking up she noticed that the two women who were in the back of the shop were no longer anywhere in sight, and the man behind the counter looked suspiciously anxious. It was about that time that she decided it was time to purchase her coat and headband, and get out as quickly as possible. In the middle of the transaction she turned her ear in the direction of the back of the store, hearing a woman's voice speaking frantically... "yes, that's correct, anthro equine. Dark. No. I don't know."

Kay started to panic a little, and finished the transaction as quickly as possible, and exited the store. Great...now the authorities probably know I'm here, know I'm anthro, and they're going to be looking for me, she thought. She sighed, and put the headband on flattening out her ears, which made hearing anything clearly almost impossible, and then put on the coat, pulling the hood over her head. She was very happy that she had eyed the sizing correctly, because it fit her well. She felt a little more comfortable, sticking her hands in the coat pockets she boldly decided to explore the city just a little bit more, but not wondering too far from her motel. There were many people around, and many androids, but she still kept a low profile. Anthro creatures were much less common, and weren't liked all that much either. She kept her guard up, and her hand on her knife. It wouldn't do her much good against any kind of guard with a high powered gun of sorts, but she knew exactly where to stab an android to short circuit it's fuses and render it useless until repairs are made to the main circuit board. Walking more towards the outskirts she noticed two obviously anthro foxes in an alley, one cloaked, and one who appeared to be part android. Kay crept closer to listen in on their conversation, but hopefully would go unnoticed. Keeping her back to the wall, and her body out of sight, she reached up to release her left ear to turn it back to listen in on their conversation. Hoping to maybe hear something, anything, about what exactly was going on in this mess of a city.

After stashing the attacker in a storage unit, the doctor deiced that it was about time that they took care of Meredith's arm.
  "Now just sit down and-"
"Doctor," Meredith cut him off ", how many times have we been through this?" She smiled as she sat in the chair, taking off her main shirt, revealing her quite real fleshy arm.
  "Is it hard to move?"
"Kind of, but its more limited and-"
"The one you hit the guy with?"
".. yea I don't like using it unless I need to.." Meredith wasn't big on talking about her body when it comes to her more mechanical aspects. She looked human, her flesh felt real as far as she was concerned it was real. The doctor cut her arm a little lower then her shoulder area, a little bit of blood ran down her arm. She bleed just like any human, her hair grew but to say she was she knew she would only be lying to her self.
"Sorry I forgot to stick you with a relaxer." The doctor face palmed as he called the android over, it was a medical one that the doctor him self had built. Opening a compartment, the doctor pulled out a needle and stuck Meredith with it. The blood began to slow down, not pouring out as fast. The doctor moved the skin away and a couple of pseudo ligaments, and reveled her inner main frame. It was defiantly more complex then almost all androids any one has ever seen, but the doctor was familiar enough, that is why Meredith had to see him alone in this town. The Doctor began to tinker with the arm, and Meredith decide to lose her self in thought.

"You look like someone who can handle themselves in a fight," Boone started off, leading the cloaked fox down the road, "Which is good! I don't know if you've heard or not, but the world is . . . off-balance, for lack of a better word. We need people like you and I to . . . turn the tables, if you understand what I mean. Now tell me, are you interested in changing this world?" Boone waited anxiously for his answer. Maybe if he brought this fox to the address he was given, he would actually start getting to do things in this resistance.

Chronin eventually got inside the city as there were no more guards coming to stop him. It took him some walking, but he managed to get far enough into the city so that the ones who had witnessed his 'evil' were not within eyesight of him. Unfortunately, he had no idea of where to go from the city he just entered, and no idea of why he was even going to the city.

Post by: flames on September 04, 2011, 11:07:54 AM
Flames had to smile, if only briefly, at that. "Off-balance, huh? That's one way of putting it. Even those of us who have been living under a rock for their entire lives could probably say that much."
The anthro paused for a moment as if trying to best judge how best to continue. The other fox who appeared to be trying to recruit him for something seemed a bit unsure of himself. If Flames had to judge based on the few moments he'd spent with the guy, he'd have said that whatever group the black fox was working with was something he was pretty new in and probably had little experience with. Chances are that it was some resistance movement or something along those lines but all the same, it was best to err on the side of caution and so Flames simply stated: "I can change the world by myself if need be. Only after I see this group that seems to want me will I decide whether I'll join."

The cloaked fox said no more, merely following, hoping that this was a resistance group rather than some other gathering or a trap and that these people were actually competent. He was probably being a little harsh with his judgements today, after all, most people hadn't seen the sort of terrors he had or lived the same way. In any given resistance movement most members would likely have lived in the cities most their lives and even those that hadn't generally tended to stay in the villages and towns that weren't too far out.
Flames had ventured further, had navigated the areas and routes that were merely "deadly" instead of "will near-instantly kill you", had seen the villages that didn't survive on their own, had seen distant rubble of settlements from before the wars. He'd fought tooth and claw against the animals that these wastelands produced, the mutants and creatures that thrived in the radiation-poisoned grasslands, the arid deserts, the toxic swamps. He'd seen what was mere rumour to even those on the outermost settlements still surviving with his own eyes.

So yes, the long journey and his own experiences were probably making him be a bit unfair in his judgement towards those around him, but fending for yourself outside the city with no settlement to call your own did that to a person. Still, he'd listen to what these people had to say, at least...

Meredith watched as the doctor finished sowing up the cut he made in her arm, it should fast enough.
"Where are you off to?" the doctor asked as he cleaned Meredith's arm.
"I have to pay my respects to the resistance group." The doctor stayed quite for a second, washing his hands as he thought.
"Just try not to anger the powers that be." The doctor handed Meredith a piece of paper and left the room. She put on her shirt, tucked the piece of paper in her pocket, and left the room and store.

The two foxes had not noticed Katayida standing at the end of the alley, listening in on their conversation. Though it was exactly what she was there for. She tucked her ear under her headband and fixed her hood again. It at least covered her ears, but her muzzle still stuck out a bit from it, although the end of her muzzle was dark enough that most people wouldn't pay much notice to her. She crept behind the two walking idly at a respectable distance to see where they were going. Keeping her hands in her coat pockets she felt through the coat that the note that the mystery anthro had given her earlier in the day was still in her pocket. It was, and she kept moving on.

Chronin continued walking until a group of armed humans in uniform caught his attention as they trained their guns on two Anthros that had left an alley.

"You are under arrest for unlawful entry into the city, you will come with us if you cannot justify your entrance." The guards were too focused on the two and did not notice Chronin creeping up behind them, getting ready to remove another 'threat'.

Boone was leading the cloaked fox to the address he was given when a voice made him jump. The group of humans didn't look to happy, something about unlawful entry. "Hold up guys. What do you mean by unlawful," he approached the humans slowly with his hands in plane view, trying to look cooperative. He had no intention of being arrested, and something told him the android sneaking behind the group was probably a good thing too. "I'm here on lawful business. Let me show you." he reached into his coat, the guards tensed but didn't seem ready to open fire yet. He gripped onto his blaster, ready to draw, all he needed was that android to make a move.

Flames didn't seem overly concerned about the current situation. Keeping his neutral, almost casual expression he leaned against the wall as he took note of the scene. He'd like to avoid having to actually draw either of his weapons just to deal with this group of guards but either way the situation didn't worry him too much.
The other fox anthro seemed to be distracting them with his talk and was reaching into his coat to stall for time and the android sneaking up on the guards looked like he could probably deal with the guards on his own if need be. He'd also noticed out of the corner of one eye a flicker of movement some way behind them and deduced that someone had been following them at a safe distance until the guards had appeared.

The cloaked anthro tried not to look too bored or let himself chuckle as he lazily looked over at the guards, careful to ignore the android behind them and thus not blow his cover. Despite his relaxed appearance he was ready to spring into action the moment he'd be needed, his modified MK-II being slowly and silently charged underneath is cloak as a just-in-case measure.

Kay stood far enough away that she could still be injured if there was a firefight, but there was nowhere for her to go that could get her out of harms way at this point. She just looked on as the guards held the two anthro's at gunpoint, and the android crept behind the guards. Her expression was still, and calm, but her heart was pounding.

Jinx finally found it. Sanctuary city. A place loosely monitered by draconis and his rule. Perfect for jinx and the 50,000 credit bounty on his head. With his hood low, he walked over the rocky rubble hills to the gates below.

He was greeted with a halt from the guards.  "do not be alarmed my friends. I am but a weary *giggle* traveller looking for a *snort* place to rest."  he struggled to keep from laughing. Little did the guards know who they were talking to.  "please take off your hood before passage."  jinx sighed and rolled back his cloak.  "An anthro! We don't like your kind here! You shall not pass!" "yes, yes, i'm an anthro, jeez, no need to friggin lose it! Now i'm just gonna pass through these gates cuz i don't want any trouble."  jinx started to walk, but he was stopped in his tracks by the spears the guards were holding.  "sorry bud. But you're not getting in here. there is no way i'm letting y--"
his words slammed to a halt. As blood dripped out of his mouth. He tried to gasp for air, to no success. He was dead before he hit the ground. The other guard stared blankly at the body. Jinx smirked and flipped out a knife. With a flash, the second guard was on the ground. Jinx flipped his hood back on, and passed through the gates.

When Chronin got close enough, he caught the attention of the guards by creating a rather loud 'fwoosh' from the flame jets. When they turned to him, he unsheathed his energy claws to gore the two closest guards and immolate their bodies with the fire from his body. Then the bodies flew from his claws and at the other guards, spreading the fire to them as well.

Flames resisted the urge to facepalm or otherwise broadcast his thoughts. Would it really have been that difficult to simply knock all the guards unconscious or at least grant them fairly painless deaths? The one who called himself Boone was approaching the android, something Flames thought unwise. Sure the war android had helped them out and Boone was clearly being somewhat cautious with the slow movement, but it still seemed more appropriate to maintain a distance. The old saying "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is rarely ever true after all and should the android either be working for its own agenda or have simply become...unstable...then the fellow anthro would quite likely be killed very easily.

Still, he had helped them, so the cloaked fox wasn't exactly going to go out and level his blaster at him or speak his suspicions aloud. He'd give the android the benefit of the doubt...from a slight distance. "Appreciated." Was all he said to the android with a quick nod and some eye contact before containing to look around, searching for any more threats that may appear and checking that the fallen guards were indeed motionless.

Kay still watched cautiously, knowing how hostile this situation could get very quickly, but seeing how quickly the black fox was to introduce himself to the war android made her feel a little bit more at ease. She held her knife in her coat pocket ready to flick it open at any moment, but didn't feel the beating of anyone near her to worry about. She had the thought that the cloaked fox had noticed her, but he wasn't going to make any moves. In fact, she didn't notice him making many moves at all.

The anthros that were standing in the middle of it all were probably the victims of some sort of attack. And above all, a huge dragon towered over the scene. Jinx decided not to approach. He was confused by the androids motives, he wasn't even sure the android wouldn't turn on him next. "Listen . . . buddy, we should get out of here. Flames nodded to this and decided that he may as well contribute to that line of thought as well: "I don't advise us to return the way we came, I'd imagine that this part of the city might be swept pretty thoroughly. I don't have much knowledge of city layouts or how well people will investigate incidents but I'd imagine that losing ourselves with the crowd near the centre of the city and then making our way to another less-populated area would be a good starting strategy."

Stretching a little as he adjusted his weight so he was no longer leaning on the wall, the anthro threw a few quick glances around before continuing: "Regardless of where we're going I'd say that leaving swiftly and preferably with someone a little more experienced with cities that I at the lead. I fear we may already have witnesses to this event."
With that he threw a significant look over his shoulder before turning his gaze back to the other two.

Katayida decided that now wasn't the best time to approach any of these fellows, unless she wanted to become roast pony, and that wasn't exactly on her list of things to do while in Sanctuary. The first thought was to get away unnoticed, and her unshawed hooves made that extremely easy on the pavement, barely any noise was made from her hooves as she slinked back into the alleyway they had just came out of, quickly disappearing into the shadows. Her first priority now was to find some weaponry that was going to be suitable for this town, because her staff and pocket knife, even though she knew how to use them, were absolutely no good to her against flame throwers and plasma-blasters. Kay was very smart though, and had a few ideas on exactly what to do, but first she needed the resources.

I need to find that mysterious anthro wolf again, Kay thought to herself. I bet he'll know where I can get the supplies I need. She walked quickly in the direction of her encounter with him earlier, but he was nowhere in sight. Damn, now I need a new plan. She walked much further down the road past her motel, and saw a shop that looked even more shady than most of the places in this town. It was dimly lit, and the windows were mostly boarded, but there was a small sign that hung crooked and was chipped that said "Enter" on the front door. "H-hello?" Kay said as she entered the shop.

An anthro bulldog walked out from behind a black curtain, he had thick rolls of skin around his neck, a lit cigarette hung from the corner of his mouth. "Whadaya need?" the bulldog said to her in a very raspy voice, "What kind of shop is this?" Kay asked, and then thought that it was likely a very stupid question to ask. The bulldog snorted, and took a drag of his cigarette flicking the excess ash onto the counter top between them. "It's a flowa store, whadya think it is, lady?" Embarrassed Kay replied, "I'm sorry, I'm just new in town, and I-" The bulldog held his paw up to her shaking it back and forth, and took another long drag of his cigarette, this time snuffing it out on the counter top. "Look lady, I'm an honest dawg, an' I don' like alotta fuss in my store, 'ere, ya see? Just tell me what yer lookin' for an' I'll see if I's can help ya out or not. Capish?"

The corners of Kays lips frowned a bit, but in a very serious tone she told the dog what she wanted. "I'm looking for a set of tools- preferably, something that can cut hardwood and metal, perhaps a laser of some sort, a mailable metal sheet, a durable metal sheet, and all the standard tools..." The dog didn't break eye contact with her while she was talking, and crossed his arms leaning back on one of his legs to shift his weight to his back hip. "I'll also need coil wire, small wing-nuts, and some screws. Also, if you have a battery with some jumper cables laying around, I'll take that too." The bulldog snorted again, like he had too much phlegm to handle, and Kay made a face. "Show me who you is fiest. Take off yer hood," the bulldog asked. Kay took her hood off and removed her headband allowing her ears to pop back up which was very relieving. "Whatcha bizness wit all dat stuff anyways?" He asked curiously. "Just some repairs I need to make." He raised his chin up knowing she wasn't going to give him any more information. "Fallow me." He lead her into the back of the store, behind the black curtain, and turned the lights on in a room full of equipment. "Dis stuff ain't exactly top of the line, but it'll getcha through. Name's Vinny, but yous ain't know dat, or I'll have onea mah boys off ya." He winked at her, and took out another cigarette, lighting it. Kay's eyes lit up as she saw all of the things she'd asked for in piles around the back room. None of it was organized, but she could get what she needed, and then some.

After getting what she needed from Vinny, she thanked, and paid him, "anytime miss. 'ere's mah card. Keep it close if yous eva in a bind." Everything she purchased was in a large brown leather duffel bag that she slung over her shoulders and onto her back. It was time to get back to her motel room, and start the alterations she needed to make.

Meredith smiled, grabbing the bounty by the scruff of his neck.
"Your going to listen, and your going to listen real good. You don't you die, simple?" Not waiting for a reply Meredith continued.  "You run, I shoot, you move without warning, I shoot, you go to scratch something, I shoot. The moral, I shoot. Now, your worth less dead, and plus I'll have to carry you, so over all I don't want you dead. All I want to do is, turn you in, get my loot, and we can be on our merry way. Now you look smart, so I'm sure you will get out, if not, sucks. But if you do, I'll take you out for a drink, of course with the money you get me, and maybe I'll have an offer for a quick scheme I need." By the time Meredith was fished, they arrived at a small guard post, "Don't do anything stupid till I have my money and am gone, or else they might take it back, in which case, I might have to you know, shoot. Any questions be fore I drop you off?"

Boone wasn't too sure about the android, nor the fox who didn't seem to do anything during the encounter. But he didn't care too much. His "job" was to find some new recruits, and maybe after he did that he could start doing some actual work. "Common then, follow me." he told the android and the anthro. He took another look at the address he was given, and headed off.

Flames slowly and silently let the charge die in his MK-II. Charging would normally create an odd whining sound and the discharge would also be rather noticable, but reducing the speed of the charge allowed for a more stealthy surprise attack if the situation called for it. However, all did appear to be under control with no sudden movements from the bodies on the floor and thus he needed to drain the charge as even his modified MK-II couldn't sustain such concentrated energies for too long without sustaining major damage. The obvious method would be to simply fire the weapon, but that would attract further attention and possibly cause the anthro and android to attack him.
Instead the charge was slowly allowed to drain away as silently as it had been built, although at a much slower rate, creating some slight excess heat beneath his cloak. He tried not to let any discomfort show as he followed the other anthro. He wouldn't be able to use his blaster safely until the charge had completely drained again and the weapon had re-stabilised, which was a major drawback to the otherwise powerful modification.

Flames could only hope that the android would be more preoccupied with following the one who had announced himself as "Boone" and wouldn't notice or question the heat draining from the blaster hidden beneath his cloak. Sure he could explain it and he had legitimate reasons but these people had no reason to trust him, especially as he hadn't done anything to aid them in that short skirmish.
Sure, he'd been prepared in case these couldn't handle it on their own but in such narrow and tight spaces he'd only have made fighting more difficult and gotten in the way. His best use to them then had been to watch their backs and ensure that they weren't about to fall into some trap when occupied. Flames doubted anyone would see things his way.

All the same, this was his only lead on any resistance movement that existed and he'd rather not turn potential allies into foes.

Chronin slowed his pace so that he was walking alongside the cloaked anthro. "My sensors are not limited to the same five as you anthros and humans." The volume of his speech was only loud enough to be heard by Flames, as he was not physically capable of whispering like some more "advanced" models. "You have a source of energy underneath your cloak that had built-up before my attack, and it has been draining away ever since we started walking. Of course, the energy is only detectable within ten meters of you, but the output on that charge is likely to draw the attention of most androids."

Flames glanced around to make sure nobody was listening and that Boone was still ahead of them enough to avoid overhearing his whispered response: "Understood. The current situation means that I'm a potential liability to our escape and attempts to keep a low profile for a while. There's nothing I can do about the charge dissipation for now...but if it does attract unwanted attention, I want you two to go ahead without me."

He paused a moment to adjust his cloak once more before continuing to walk alongside the android. "If I stay with you we'll be easier to trace and you'll probably have a harder time to avoid attention should anyone become...interested...in us. Under this scenario I'd understand if you'd rather have me leave now and avoid getting you spotted. In either case, I'll attempt to regroup once I've lost attention and safely drained the charge."

Chronin's voice changed pitch, almost taking on a mirthful tone. "I am not wearing any form of covering beyond the armor I was built with, and I am taller than you both. Your energy pistol is the least of my concerns when it comes to 'blending in'. You could fire that round into the air, and the first thing their eyes will settle on will be me."

Boone ignored the fact that the other two seemed to be trying to talk behind his back. He didn't really care what they had to say, or what their motives for following him was. He just hoped that once they were recruited, he would be promoted to a higher position, where he could actually start what he had come here to do.

Flames tried not to let his embarrassment show on his face. "Ah, you are correct. Very true..."
He turned his head slightly to cough a few times before addressing the android again: "Would I be correct in assuming that you have some sort of course of action? Somehow you don't strike me as the type to start up conversation about how I stand out like a sore thumb to sensors and you're effectively a massive attention-magnet..."

Chronin was silent, then an odd laugh came out of his voice box. "You would be incorrect. I had just awoken only half an hour ago... much has obviously changed, and the factions that had commissioned my creation, have yet to be seen."

As Meredith counted her earnings to make sure everything was there, she noticed how much time she had wasted.
"They should gather soon.." she thought to her self as she left to go find who she was looking for.

Kay had been working tirelessly on her staff to modify it into a useable weapon for this city. In Vinny's shop she had found a few schematics on the inner workings of an MK-II left over from the repair wards of the last war, and an actual, but completely broken, MK-II plasma blaster. She had seen them in action before and knew how much of a reaction they needed to charge up and then to fire, but wanted to fix the broken one and keep it as more of a back up than her first line of defense. The first line she had was going to be her staff.

She used the laser cutting tool to cut a clean chunk from the top side of her staff, and then a clean slice all the way through to the bottom, but only boring halfway through, making circular slices and sealing the wood with a paste so it wouldn't crack. Then she took the maliable metal and covered the inside of the portion of the staff she cut out to make it able to withstand the heat of the coils and the charge. Screwing the metal into place, she then took the thicker coils and two reactors with fine copper wire and placed them on the ends of each coil to the reaction chamber where the plasma would build before being able to be used. Checking over the schematics once more she knew she was doing it right, and was pretty proud of herself, but owed it all to the family that raised her.

She fused the coils and the copper wire together, taking two bolts and fastening them down tighter into the staff. She bored out a hole through the top of her staff where the plasma would be shot from and coated that with the goo, and maliable metal as well. Securing gagues on the top outside of her staff to check the pressure and the current, the next thing she did was take the jumper cables and the old battery, and hooked them on to the bolts connected to the wire, connected to the coils. She could hear a buzzing, so she knew it was getting a charge and watched the charge gague go up to the halfway mark, before she unhooked it, and let it go back down. That was only a test to see if what she was doing was working. So far, it was. She then cut a piece of the durable metal and placed it on the outside top of her staff, covering the entire thing for ultimate durability, and bolted it closed using the wing-nuts to fasten it down tightly. She cut an opening over the part where the coils were again to make a hinged door, and another hole where she would attach a button that would act as a trigger would on a normal MK-II. At the middle of her staff she still had the halfway bored line and cut another section out for the plasma container that she carefully removed from the broken MK-II and took the knobs from it as well to attach the canister inside of her staff.

Several hours later she had managed to create a staff that looked like a normal walking staff, except now it had a metal casing around the top, a hinged door, a few gagues, and two buttons. The firing button, and the charge button as she decided to toss the idea of fixing the old MK-II, and just use it's parts instead. Looking at her watch she noticed that it was getting close to the time that she was supposed to go to the address on the paper that the mystery wolf gave her. She grabbed her staff and her pocket knife, throwing on her headband to flatten her ears, and putting her hooded jacket back on. Leaving her hotel room she headed in the direction of the address on the crinkled sheet of paper.
