Title: Vampire Books
Post by: WingedZephyr on March 24, 2011, 03:18:23 AM
I'm interested in vampire-related fiction, and I'm always looking for related books to read. I have a small collection going. So far I've read:

Interview with the Vampire (by Anne Rice)
The Twilight Saga (by Stephenie Meyer)
The House of Night series (by PC and Kristin Cast)
Thirsty (by M Anderson)
Peeps (by Scott Westerfield)
The Blue Bloods series (by Melissa de la Cruz)
Companions of the Night (by Vivian Vande Velde)

I also own Thirst (by Christopher Pike), but haven't read it yet. And there are still others on my "wish list" that I haven't gotten around to yet. Just curious if anyone else knows some decent ones they could recommend. I generally enjoy "Young Adult" books, but whatever is fine.

Well, I personally can't stand vampire books because I think it's annoying how the YA section is filled with nothing but vampire books, rehashed ideas for vampire books, and even more vampire books......BUT I will put out an option for you since you enjoy them and you have every right to: I'd like to reccomend The Passage by Justin Cronin. No it isn't romantic vampires. It's more like evil bloodthirsty monster vampires and sci fi. It's also longer and more adult and ilterary...but hey, there's vampires? D: sorry I was no help.

I'm not a Twilight fangirl, I'm not only into cheesy romantic vampire stories. Thirsty and Peeps are probably my two favorites from my list, and they're both a bit unconventional.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look it up.

I love Ann-rice's books.
Their just so beautifully and elegantly written with a great story line and characters.
Lestat is almost irresistible to both love and fear.
xD

As for the Twilight series, I loved the book series.
But I greatly dislike the fanbase and movies.
Stephanie Meyer writes great and her characters are somewhat interesting.

Ooo! Ooo! Pick me, pick me!
Hehe.

Umm...you might like the Vampire Academy series. (*whispers* I may love it more than Twilight, so yeah, you know... Haha.)
The absolute main character isn't a vampire but a dhampir. There are also two types of vampires: Moroi (the good vampires) and Strigoi (the evil vampires AKA pretty much our ordinary vampire image, bloodthirsty and heartless and whatnot).
I think you'd enjoy it. It's got a lot of substance to it and things don't go perfectly so you don't know exactly what's going to happen (unlike with Twilight when you can pretty much tell what's going to happen).

I've also read the Vampire Plagues trilogy but it's kind for kids between child and young adults (yeah, the age range says 9-12) so I don't think you'll want to read them. I had read them when I was a couple years over that age.

That's all I've got though because I haven't had a chance to read any others. But now I've got suggestions for what I should read by looking at what you've read, a couple of which (Blue Bloods and Peeps) I was planning on reading already. :D

One of my favorite vampire books has to be, of course, Bram Stokers Dracula. I know its not young adult, but I feel almost obligated to recomend it to you...

Yeah, been meaning to get around to that one. :P

Woo! Lots of suggestions, thanks! I enjoy watching the True Blood TV series, so the Sookie Stackhouse series has been on my to-do list for a while. Will definitely look up some of the others as well.

Yeah, I've heard you talking about Vampire Academy for a while. XD Might check that one out next. I thoroughly enjoyed Peeps. Blue Bloods is okay, but I've had a hard time getting into it as much because I've had to wait a long while between each book release.

You know this werepyre, I get pretty worked up over things like this. :P lol. Actually, I get worked up over any book/book series that I really love.
Yeah, the last Vampire Academy book came out in Fall 2010 or around there so you wouldn't have to wait for any more to come out. Though there is going to be a spin-off series using four of the "less important" (kind of) characters from the series as the main characters of the spin-off.
Glad to hear that you like the others. It's good to have an opinion on them beforehand.

Ooh.  I love vamp novels too and have several to recommend.  All mine are via kindle.  By far the best I have read read recently is the Dark Days series by Jocelynn Drake, 5 books.   Blood destiny series by Connie Suttle is good too.  The only thing that I really didn't like about that series was there were too many overly powerful races and characters as well as a time shift of 350 years.  Time travel is a hard concept to make believable.. esp when its not the main focis of the story.   I can recommend more too..   Vampire Vacation is an erotica novel that I liked because it is written well and has a good storyline. The second half of the book is mostly focused on the story and not the romance/erotica

Since I was able to get an e-reader a few months ago, I've read a few more books than what's listed on my first post, and bought a few more that I will get around to reading soon.

Thanks for the continuing suggestions though, I still like to hear about new books I might like. :P

You should let us know what you think of the ones you have already read esp if they are ones we suggested.  if you tell us more of what you like and don't like about them we can do better recommendations,  I must have a couple dozen on my Kindle that I have read.   I am now reading the third book in the the Secret McQueen series.  they are good, she is half werewolf and half vampire and has assends the ranks from rogue hunter to much more powerful positions but doesn't want to spoil it.   I do have a pet peeve about a lot of these books in that the character is so conflicted about their human vs supernatural tendencies.  In this series for example the character needs to just deal with the fact that she is not human at all.   Just get over it and embrace who you are already ;)

Ones I've read:

Interview with the Vampire (by Anne Rice)
- ★★☆☆☆ (2.5 out of 5) - I found it difficult to read, honestly. I only forced my way through it because everyone and their mother talks about it. The characters themselves were interesting enough, but the writing style was just... ugh. Not my thing.

The Twilight Saga (by Stephenie Meyer)
- ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5) - I'm not a hardcore Twilight fan at all, but I actually quite liked the first book. The rest of the series was a little meh, but still enjoyable enough. I don't care if the vampires in books are monsters or softies; as long as the characters are interesting to me.

The House of Night series (by PC and Kristin Cast)
- ★★★☆☆ (3.5 out of 5) - The amount of teenage slang and giggly "boy talk" in this series drives me absolutely crazy, but for some reason I still love to read it. Some of the books are much better than the others.

Thirsty (by M Anderson)
- ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5) - I just really liked this book. It was engaging, interesting, and I liked the darker sides of it.

Peeps (by Scott Westerfield)
- ★★★★★ (5 out of 5) - I really liked this book because of its perspective on vampires. I like books that don't use all of the same typical "rules" for vampires. The characters and writing style were great.

The Blue Bloods series (by Melissa de la Cruz)
- ★★★☆☆ (3 out of 5) - I keep falling in and out of this series. I enjoy it when I read it, but it's been very easily forgettable for me. I completely lose track of what's going on, and end up having to re-read the books again each time a new one comes out.

Companions of the Night (by Vivian Vande Velde)
- ★★☆☆☆ (2.5 out of 5) - Was okay. Nothing particularly bad nor great about it. Just an average vampire book.

The Anti-Vampire Tale (by Lewis Aleman)
- ☆☆☆☆☆ (0 out of 5) - This was a really terrible book. I hated pretty much everything about it.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side (by Beth Fantaskey)
- ★★★☆☆ (3 out of 5) - A light and easy read. I liked most of the characters.

Thirst (by Christopher Pike)
- ★★★☆☆ (3 out of 5) - I've only gotten through Thirst No. 1 of the four books, but it was okay. It was a little slow in some parts, but I like the main character. I'm going to continue reading the rest when I get a chance.

Sweetblood (by Pete Hautman)
- ★★★☆☆ (3 out of 5) - Like Peeps, I appreciate this one for its fresh perspective on vampires. The story isn't as well executed as the one in Peeps though.

Ones I currently have but still need to read:

My Blood Approves (by Amanda Hocking)
The Sookie Stackhouse series (by Charlaine Harris)
Vampire Academy series (by Richelle Mead)

There's also a few in this thread that I am interested in getting at some point. It's just hard to keep up with too many series at once. :P

Based on my history of books I end up liking, these are the general guidelines of what I am likely to enjoy:
- Female protagonist (preferably one with "strong" character, rather than a damsel in distress)
- Unique vampire theories
- Humor
- Dark themes (violence, vengence, uncontrollable urges to kill/maim)

And things I tend to dislike:
- Stories that stay strict to traditional vampire "rules"
- Boy drama (as in, "OMG these two totally hot guys are drooling over me, MY LIFE IS SO DIFFICULT OMG." or "LOOK AT THOSE 16-PACK ABS AND GLITTERING WHITE TEETH *swoon*")... Ugh.
- The main character being just plain stupid and dramatic for no reason.

But these are obviously not "set in stone" rules. I can put up with minor annoyances. And sometimes those things that are normally annoyances are actually helpful to the story. So whatever. :P

Vampire Academy! Do eeeeet!

CHECK - Female protagonist (preferably one with "strong" character, rather than a damsel in distress)
CHECK (though some traditional stuff) - Unique vampire theories
CHECK - Humor
CHECK (in some parts) - Dark themes (violence, vengence, uncontrollable urges to kill/maim)

The main character does have some "boy drama" but not in the way that you described. It's sort of a more realistic sort of drama and they don't make it extremely over-the-top.

Really not into fan fiction. The once in a blue moon that one is actually really good doesn't make up for the hundreds that are lame. I don't like to waste my time wading through them. I used to read more of it, but got tired of it.

I just finished the 3rd book in the Secret McQueen series.   Title is "Deep Dark Secret" it was released last month on kindle.
I think you will like it as Secret is a hybrid.  Vampire/werewolf.   Also it has Fae, demons, shifters (ocolet, ferret).  My same pet peeve occurs in this series where sh wants to hold onto he humanity by not feeding on live humans.    However she is not even part human.  (See above) and I have never understood the hangup on feeding off live prey.  Interesting in this book though that one of the characters actually points this out to her.   I hope there is a fourth book as there are some loose ends that need adressing at the end of the book

This thread was made quite some time ago, and it's entirely possible you've discovered all sorts of things in the interim, but I can't pass up the opportunity to recommend The Dresden Files to anyone interested in occult fantasy. It's not entirely about vampires (the main character is a wizard/private eye and there are werewolves, faeries, demons, ect.) but they're fairly prominent in the series, and it has some interesting takes on old mythology. For example, vampires in the Dresden Files universe are repelled not by religious symbols but by the faith behind them - because the main character doesn't have faith in the Christian God, crosses et al won't work as a ward, for him.
The fanbase seems divided on the more recent books, but I find the series itself enjoyable, on the whole.

i'm not really a huge vampire person (i lean more towards werewolves) so i don't have many books that feature vamps.

there is, however, one series. the main character is a werewolf but there's a really unique and original vampire concept. look up Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn owo
