Title: Therian Physical Quirks
Post by: WhiteTiger89 on February 01, 2011, 09:46:44 PM
It's funny how things can be such a fact of life for us that we don't even think they're significant after awhile.

Reading some of the posts in this section of TFF has really brought a lot of stuff up for me, and just last night, two things flashed back up from my memory and I wanted to know what people thought and if anyone has had any similar experiences, or if they have some physical quirks of their own. By that, I mean certain movements or physical reactions. Senses count as well. (Warning: Wall of text to follow  :P)

For me, the two big things I remembered were the fact that since I was a child, I would climb stairs on all fours. And ironically enough, this started AFTER I was grown enough to walk and run up them "normally". I still do it to this day. It just feels natural to me. I almost had a really embarrassing experience in high school because of this.  :$  The school I went to had three floors with very large staircases, and one day I had the very powerful urge to crouch down on all fours and climb up the stairs that way, even though I was tall enough to walk up them two at a time. I stopped myself from actually doing it, and every now and again, that desire would pop up again.

The second thing has also been with me since childhood. You know how kittens, and cats in general, will curl in on themselves and go rigid when you pinch the back of their neck? I do the same thing. It was really bad in middle school because a former friend of mine told that fact to a group of bullies who'd been harassing me. So for months, they would come up behind me and grab/pinch the back of my neck. Every time it happened, it was like a jolt of electricity shot down my spine and effectively paralyze me. My arms would curl in and lock up, my legs would buckle and lock up, and even my jaw would lock open as a tried and failed to cry out. Understandably, whenever they did this to me while I was standing or walking, it would drop me to the floor like a brick, and it would take me almost a full two minutes to recover and get back on my feet.

One day during PE, one of these bullies came up behind me while we were running on the track and did this. I almost did a backflip because of it. I landed flat on my back, but this time adrenaline came to the rescue. The paralytic effect of this wore off almost immediately and I jumped back to my feet and sprinted after this guy. When I caught him, I kicked his legs out from under him and sent him face first into the track. Needless to say, he stopped messing with my neck after that. B)

I've mentioned in another post that my hearing has been abnormally sensitive my whole life, but I've got one story I really want to share about that. High school also. I was waiting for the bus with a group of my friends, who all knew my hearing was sensetive, and this motorcycle stops at the red light next to our bus stop. I don't think anything of it at first, seeing as my dad had one and my ears could at least tolerate it. Then the light turns green and this motorcycle takes off. I don't know what the deal was, but the explosion of sound that followed its acceleration was so painfully loud that I collapsed! Not stumble, not fall to my knees. I dropped straight to the ground and into the fetal position with my hands clapped so tightly to my ears that my friends couldn't pull them off. I don't know how long I was down like that, but it was a while because at least two of my friends missed their bus to stay and make sure I was okay. They had no idea my ears were that sensitive.

So yeah, those are my big physical quirks and the stories they've caused. Anyone have any of their own to share?

I would like it to be reminded that being therian is not based on physical qualities, therian beliefs are primarily based upon spiritual feelings and/or qualities that could influence physical activities to be caused as a result, this explanation perhaps being one of them. Sounds interesting, though remember to decide what you feel you are is ultimately up to you rawr.

Yeah, I know therian is more spiritual based. I was just wondering if anyone else here had stories/experiences similar to mine.

Just from reading this a few things come to mind:

1)
When I'm not wearing shoes i always walk as if my legs are digitigrade, Apparently I have done this all my life, my parents think its because when I was a child we lived in a house with cold tiles, My brother did the same thing but he stopped as soon as we moved and I have continued to do so even to this day.

2)
When I'm board I get an urge to walk around on all fours, Some of my friends have seen me but I don't mind. I have walk up stairs on all fours randomly once, My friend and I were walking to my house and when we got to the steps I suddenly started to walk on all fours, My friend was like  :o.

This apparent also happens when I get really angry as well, Recently one of the school bullies was harassing my friend, at first I asked him to stop but then he ditched a piece of bark at my face, I dodged it then threw the sandwich i was eating at him, it hit him square in the face, He grabbed the sandwich and rubbed it in my face. I cant remember exactly what happened but according to the people watching I growled got down on all fours and pounced at him. This ended with me getting beaten up, But I haven't been bullied since  :/.

I got called a freak in Primary school but as of yet no-one at high-school has said anything.

She found it fun, I didn't so much and good thing nobody would try that with me cuz I'd throw them into the ground quicker then they could gain grip in their weak fingers. I was very good and showing my teeth when I was young, so nobody would even consider bothering me. :/ Don't know if that counts.

I've just remembered I also tend to hiss, click, and whistle too now that I think about it... so making strange sounds is mainly my special quirk.  o.O

To this day, I will still growl/hiss at whatever character in movies/video games/books that irritates or angers me. I don't have the will or desire to hold myself back in those situations.

I make a growling noise in the back of my throat when I'm annoyed. And when answering people I (This annoys my parents) make a "Grunt-like" noise, similar to that of the growl I make in the back of my thoat. It varries in pitch and length depending on what it means. Ex: A short higher pitched 'grunt' can be equivilant to say, shrugging ones shoulders. I have alot of combinations that mean different things, I don't feel like listing them xD I make these 'grunting' noises all the time, same with the growling.

The more I read about it the more I feel normal lol...I instinctively would growl, hiss, and howl when I would feel strong emotions. I also walked up stairs on all fours and sometimes when running or walking I would use my arms more like front legs that were sweeping out in front of me and grabbing the ground with my "claws". I've also jumped up on my bed using my front end like a cat. I feel much more connected to my inner self when these actions take hold so I think that a lot of the desires and reactions are the inner animal spirit coming out. But that's just a theory  :/ I often wonder does anyone else feel the need to avoid "human" interaction when exploring their "territory"? I often leave the house to run and explore the wooded area behind my house and if I think a person is in my area I'll freeze and get low like an animal trying to blend in...this happens automatically like a heightened fight or flight.

I've had this happen before when exploring the woods outback my house, or when exploring the woods/less popular areas at my campground. I freeze when I hear noise also, Kinda like a deer would I suppose, then I usually scan the area for awhile before continuing on.

I've also jumped up on my bed using my front end like a cat.

I do that all the time ;)

You have a rare gift white tiger.. u should be proud for what instinct u have compared to a feline.. im also glad im not alone.. but my animal condition is a far more proovin aspect throughout mental, physical ways.. [removed]

My family have been around horses for decades.. mabye centrys. and my father told me my mother was horse typical.. i havnt seen my father since 5 years ago.. ive been seperated from him for a whole 9 years.. that image stayed in my head.. ive been more socail to the horses than people.. i didnt like people.. the physical condition is the digesting and nuetrition system.. I have a stomach that wont stop growling.. I can eat as much possible but i cant even grow a pinch of fat nearly anywhere visable.. now the mental condition is yet connected to nerv.. reaction, [removed]. the nerv is a simularity to a horse, it takes a harder pinch to hurt.. and an easy scratch for saticfaction.. or the palm of some1s hand running down my neck.. [removed] the coincidences of all this remain a mystery :( but ive had a few suggestions for it.. 1 and the 1 ive researched involving acient religouns and conected all around the world.. haunted my mother before she was pregnant.. she had ufo and paranormal encounters in her childhood.. scary huh? another is just simply me haloosinating but either way.. its always been with me.. and always will..

1. I tend to walk on my toes
2. When I'm angered/annoyed, I growl and swipe at people as if I have claws.
3. At times I believe I have a tail.
4. I nuzzle people instead of hugging.

I feel so normal now <3

- I also jump on my bed like a cat does
- I walk on my toes (maybe just because my parents say i stomp when i walk normal)
- I growl and show my teeth (but not at stranger)
- I like to walk on all fours. I don't do that often right now, but always have the urge to do it. That started with beeing a horse fan in my childhood. I always walked on all four, in different gaits. I jumped about obstacles with a height of around 60cm/23,6", maybe nore. My parents always told me to stop doing it and walk like a nomral human does. Haven't done  that for some time now. I don't know how good I'm at it now, got some weight  since then and I don't wanna hurt myself <_<
- When something in our house scares me with a weird noise or something like that, I move quiet, ducked and with my hands under my chest. Or I walk slow on all fours

I think there are some other little habits, like using me teeth instead of another tool, but the ones above are the main ones

Lolz this pretty well describes what I do, though I don't consider myself a therian. Dog food is quite tasty ^_^
And I still bite  XD Why not? It's a useful tactic :P

It's a good way to find yourself talking with a psychologist or a psychiatrist. I know first-handedly.

I do have several weird thoughts about anatomically difficult activities, but the experience mentioned above made me horribly self-aware and I don't practice them (fearing it will make someone notice), at least not when anyone can see me. Except one thing that's very hard to control - I tend to walk extremely silently even in heavy boots on gravel. I've been yelled at for sneaking a lot :$ even though I really try not to do this.

I have found I have a bad tendency to bat at dangling objects or feel the strongest urge to chase after rapidly moving bits of string of other small moving things.

I've always had the "walk on all fours on stairs" quirk. I had to get used to not doing that when other people are there, especially at school or at my friend's house. I often do have the urge to bite people, and I hate having my nails clipped short. I feel sorta "defenseless" without my claws, honestly. XD That's really all I can think of right now.

I'm not therian, though I find the topic pretty interesting and wish I could have that sort of spiritual feeling and whatnot. Personally, I think most of these "quirks" are normal ancient human traits that are still with us from before we created the civilization we have today. It's just that most people have grown to ignore these urges and such, as they are viewed as socially improper in modern time. And I think the all-fours-on-stairs thing is just to keep balance better. :P

On the subject of arm wrestling, I am quite weak physically, but in the few seconds from the start to my loss, I feel... I dunno... It's kind of like a cloak? Hard to describe. It starts at my wrestling hand and I feel I have claws; I feel other alterations begin and spread but by then I've lost and the moment has passed.

Also I have excellent night vision; to the point where if there is the tiniest glimmer of light in the room, I can see colour. When my friends are blind, I think: "What the hell? You wimps it's only dusk... oh..." and realize it is actually night time. I still get confused over this at 18.

I have also had to fight the urge for years for the all fours on stairs, and now it is only lack of flexibility that stops me; going up or down with a handrail on either side I can still do it, and usually do before I can stop myself

Whenever I get into a fight; combat seems to be multiplied fourfold - the urge to drop to all fours, the urge to ignore tactics in favour of wild flailing, the urge to revoke technique - all need to be fought in someone of my physical strength. And that is before we take into account the enemy himself. Technique, tactics, speed, and agility are key for me, and the threat of losing it in even my karate sparring scares me for a RL fight; and indeed I have had the crap beaten out of me because of losing control at the wrong time.

Still, on the other hand, momentary lapses have conversely saved my bacon; a strike that I had no chance of blocking dodged because my other self took over, dropped me into a crouch and pounced, or I spot someone creeping up who thought themselves cloaked in darkness.

TL;DR Although not realizing it at the time, my secondary self seems to affect my state of mind in times of stress, and there may be something of an animal's keen eyesight in me. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

P.S. Yes I love writing about combat  ^_^

It's funny you bring up martial arts, FeralWulf, because it reminds me of my own experiences.

I don't know if it happened consciously or subconsciously but at some point, my limited martial arts training started fusing with my animal side. I started moving more like a cat, and fighting based on instinct as opposed to strict observation. It's a weird mix. Formal training powered by animal instinct and ferocity. I tried practicing again a couple years ago, but left before long because I didn't trust myself to stick to the techniques we were being taught. My animal side wanted to test itself against a legitimate opponent and I knew if that happened, I would run the risk of really injuring my classmates. I felt that was a risk best left avoided.

You aren't the only one who loves some combat talk ^_^
I recently joined the fight club at my college dorm due to being interested in seeing if i was any good, since I've had absolutely no training, don't have that much upper-body strength, and altogether not much fighting material.
Turns out I have a knack for it :P I beat the dorm champion my first night  ^_^ Still immensely proud with myself over that  :3
There's just something about the adrenaline rush you get when you get into a fight. And though it's all just friendly submissions-only combat, it still just gives me that rush and urge to win. My heart-rate rises, my hands get kind of twitchy, and my vision gets crazy focused. I wear glasses, and my vision is not good at all without them. Well, I took them off to fight, but after the first fight and that first adrenaline rush, I could see better. I kept my eyes locked on him, and I could see everything about him crystal clear.
Just thought I'd throw in my two cents there  XP

Sadly, I wouldn't be able to participate because any time I even think about getting into a combat situation, my instincts take over and...yeah. Simply put, my fursona has a very strong fight-to-kill/incapacitate mentality when it comes to combat.

I get the same rush when i play paintball and also my glasses dont fit in my mask (without vision cut in half), when i play my vision gets a little better but my hearing gets turned up to the point that i could hear a pin drop a football field away. I never get hit when my other side wants to play, LOL Then there's my reflexes/speed get fast enough that getting hit with a paintball will be hard. ^_^
The last time i played it was VSing a trained marine that was fun.   XD

Yeah I know what you mean. When I get into a ranged combat situation, and my other self joins in, if in the day my sight seems to shut down; I don't remember seeing anything, but I remember hearing the tiniest sounds. At night my night vision kicks in and again my hearing improves; not sure if I just don't notice it when up close but it is somewhat scary that it might depend on range, and the daytime sight thing is just strange.  :?
Paintball is fun for me during the day; people in full camo, laid down in the grass, entirely stationary - me wandering around in bright clothing; I shoot them first and then proceed to not get hit; near regardless of range. Afterwards they ask how I knew they were there; when I state that I heard them they mention the range and the lack of motion and the relentless dodging of paintballs, and I don't know how to reply, other than to reiterate that I heard them. XP

Haven't faced a marine, but I've only played paintball a couple times, and usually against people who claim they are good; indeed, some of them only have my paint on them, so... T_T

Even in indoor situations, I can dodge any thrown item if my other self joins in; even dodged a table by leaping it. B)

TL;DR again; if accompanied by my friendly other side, you are best off closing rather than trying a ranged fight; in close combat he is a hinderance at times while at ranged he is just pure win. :*

P.S. Because I can. Squee! ^_^

I walk digitigrade often, I hiss when irritated, yip when surprised, which gets me looks at school, I meow sometimes, and purr when I'm truly content, though I've never noticed myself. Sometimes I growl, too. When I stretch or yawn, I do so like a cat. And if I'm outside at night, I tend to prowl.

I have the urge to growl at people when im angry, but I rarely do it since I got bullied ever since. I make those whiny noices dogs make when get hurt when I get hurt or when im sad. I have a pretty sensitive hearing, when I listen to music I have it on the minimum volume. My friends cant even hear it, but for me its often too loud. I have got the "fight or flight" instinct pretty much all the time, but it once hit me pretty hard. The bully gang at school started to throw rocks at me, so I ran off. I were 50 yards away and the bully leader took a pellet gun out from his jacket. You know those that have a little gas tank and shoot small steel pellets. He fired four pellets at me, I dodget two of them, one missed and I cought the last one in my hand. No joke. My right arm was bleeding pretty much but I walked slowly up to him and punched him in the face, he broke his nose.
He is now a 17 year old alcaholic and I am doing just fine.

I growl when I'm annoyed or angry. When I stretch I tend to be lying down, my hands are above my head with my arms bent. I move and stretch my entire body, generally rolling over in the process. Sometimes I'll randomly rub my head against things.

While being a child, I acted more like an animal than a human.
I tended to walk four legged, while at kindergarden and grandparents house, especially up the stairs at grands'' house, since their staircase was is damn tall. I also digged with my hands dog-like, instead of tools (and I still consider it more comfortable).

Also, till this day I tend to:
yawn like cats,
growl and show teeth when angry,
use teeth to hold objects (thou' I think it's completely normal),
purr when rubbed and/or happy and
sometimes rub cat-like instead of hugging.

I considered myself... different... like... completely different, if not strange, because of "normals'" reactions to these actions. Now I see that I'm just part of wrong society.
I mean... We, therians, should/could make our own society, where all of these will be percieved as normal.
*awkwardly: * Right? :s

When I'm happy I stick my tongue out and pant. I bite when I feel threatened. I feel like I'm curling a tail between my legs when I'm sad. I growl if I get really annoyed, though my friends think that's funny and just keep enhancing it which gets annoying. I put animals higher than people, idk why. I walk upstairs on four legs, even done this in middle school couple times XD. I also have urges to howl sometimes.

I feel phantom ears a lot, phantom muzzle with different teeth, and I recently started feeling a light coat of fur on my arms and chest. I also some times have an urge to growl or howl, which I like to give into if no one is around. My lip curls up like I'm ready to bite when I'm mad, and I yawn like a canine. I also find myself walking around with my legs bent, especially when I'm feeling wolfish or trying to move quick but quiet. And I have always had a growl in my voice when I'm ticked.

I am a semi-arboreal Dromeosaur

-I chase small animals (for play not to consume but im very quick and precise as if i might.
-I climb trees and honk into to the distance (i especially enjoy it in mornings and foggy days) i also produce a couple other sounds
-I run with my arms slung close to my body and staying primarily on my toes (talons)
-I hiss when aggravated
-sometimes i clack my jaw abruptly to get a snapping sound
- have a tick that causes me to puff up and twist my neck all the way in any direction, i also lift my arms and put my head under it when resting in  class to keep my head warm and hidden.
-I can also be found fighting with my legs and leaping(if i get anywhere near you neck your probably done)
-Sometimes i feel an electric impulse go up my spine and my head if someone goes behind me or crosses my "electrical pulse field"
- and i have bit my friend you grabbed my shoulder abruptly (im easily startled by sudden movements and noises)
