Title: Statistics
Post by: Tweak on August 29, 2010, 01:42:19 PM
I decided a number of you might be interested in the statistics for the forums. The forum gives statistical information (http://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?action=stats) but this is very much limited to the scope of the forum.

The statistics I'm giving here make use of the server logs and Google Analytics to show trends an information of all visitors to the forum.

Note: All statistics are correct as of 29th August, 12:15am GMT

So far this month the forums have transferred over 10.5 GIGABYTES of data, an increase of over 250 MB from last month and nearly 4 GB more than in January, the data has increased every month bar May when it dropped to only 6.5 GB. This means that per visit each user downloads 12 MB of data through an average of 2.5 visits per visitor. This includes over 2 GB of bandwidth from bots etc.

The busiest day this month was the 19th August and the quietest was the 14th August. By 15 minutes past the "new day" today the forums had already transferred more data than on the 14th. Interesting the busiest day of the week is a Thursday with the quietest being Monday. Most visits occur around 11pm GMT (5pm Central) with the least at 8am GMT (2am Central).

According to the statistics the busiest country is the UK, however as the server IP is included as a host (due to internal calls for avatars etc) this is skewed and the highest is the USA followed by the UK. We've also had visitors from Sweden, Russia, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Malaysia, China, Latvia, New Zealand, Iraq, Finland, Norway, Ukraine, Poland, Oman, Slovakia, Thailand, Austria, Luxembourg, Israel and Romania.

The top 25 users shows Cyan having used the most bandwidth this month (after the server) followed closely by Crevan with Kid Jojo at the bottom of the top 25 - a difference of over 200 MB of data (this doesn't include internal calls to load avatars etc).

When it comes to various robots and spiders Yahoo Slurp has used over 1 GB of bandwidth in its indexing and Googlebot has used 255 MB.

Most visits last between 0 and 30 seconds (probably bots) with the next largest visit being over an hour! The average overall is about 15 minutes.

85% of users use Windows with 36% using XP followed by 32% using 2008 and then Vista / 7 with 15%. Mac accounts for 9.2% of visits with all visitors using OS X. Linux is a measly 2.5% with the majority using Ubuntu, although SUSE, Mandriva/Mandrake and Fedora are shown too. Other operating systems include the PSP, Wii, Solaris and Symbian.

When it comes to browsers Firefox has 33% usages with the latest 3.6(.8) being used, hits come from FF 4 as well as 3.5(.11) and even some from 3.0(.19) with a few still on FF 2. IE users mostly use version 8 with some hits from 7 and 6. Netscape has a small amount of users. The most commonly used browser is Google Chrome with over a quarter of visitors using it. Safari, Opera, Mozilla, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Android are also used.

81% of users have the site bookmarked or browse directly whereas 10% come from Search engines. Another 8% are linked from various sites.

Please note that although this records can all be linked up, the information is presented separately for privacy reasons. Any connections appearing on this page are merely coincidental and I have not "stalked" any specific user.

I hope you've found the mass of information on the forums interesting. If people would be interested in a monthly update I would be happy to consider it.

Oman accounted for 2500 hits - most likely a single person. The UK have quite a lot of users really, we aren't that small! Bandwidth per user differs, I just thought it may be of interest.

Regular updates will be done.

Just to show - another 5 GB of bandwidth has already been used in the past 9 hours, I think I'm going to have to increase the limits!

Interesting info, I look forward to seeing how the data changes in the future. And Solaris? I know the workstations and severs are still in use widely enough to matter but I didn't think any visitors would be running the OS.
Anyway, thanks for the info Tweak.

Technically it would, yes. But as the package isn't paid for directly it won't cost me more out of pocket.

I don't really understand what you mean by not directly, but that's good to hear. This place is expensive already o.o
Title: Re: Statistics
Post by: Tweak on August 30, 2010, 10:24:27 AM
The server is what donations are collected for, the server hosts a number of things as well as providing paid hosting. Each site hosted has its own package which cost a certain amount monthly, because no-one pays for the forums directly (donations cover everything) it means that no costs increase with upgrades unless it hits the server limits.

This gives more expansion without affecting costs. Donations cover all my costs as it cuts down my time and money input allowing me to focus on more.

This month's statistics have been uploaded earlier as I will have no further chances before October.

The statistics I'm giving here make use of the server logs and Google Analytics to show trends an information of all visitors to the forum.

Note: All statistics are correct as of 24th September, 14:37 GMT

So far this month the forums have transferred over 14 GIGABYTES of data, an increase of over 1.5 GB from last month and nearly 7 GB more than in January. This means that per visit each user downloads 15 MB of data through an average of 2.5 visits per visitor. This includes over 4 GB of bandwidth from bots etc. As many of you will have noticed, this actually hit the hard limit set on the account, this will be raised for next month to insure it doesn't affect the forum availability in the future.

The busiest day this month was the 12th (nearly 1 GB) and the quietest was the 6th. Interesting the busiest days of the week is Sunday and Thursday with the quietest being Friday. Most visits occur around 11pm GMT (5pm Central) with the least at 8am GMT (2am Central).

According to the statistics the busiest country is the USA followed by the UK (now the server logging has been fixed). We've also had visitors from Oman, Poland, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Ukraine, Czech Republic, China, Latvia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Spain, Thailand, Luxembourg, Brazil and Japan.

The top 25 users shows Crevan having used the most bandwidth this month followed closely by Lita with Macid0031 at the bottom of the top 25 - a difference of over 600 MB of data.

When it comes to various robots and spiders Yahoo Slurp has used over 2 GB of bandwidth in its indexing and Googlebot has used 450 MB.

Most visits last between 0 and 30 seconds (probably bots) with the next largest visit being over an hour! The average overall is about 15 minutes.

85% of users use Windows with 30% using XP followed by 40% using 2008 and then Vista / 7 with 10%. Mac accounts for 10.7% of visits with all visitors using OS X. Linux is a measly 4.5% with the majority using Ubuntu, although SUSE and Fedora are shown too. Other operating systems include the PSP, Wii and Symbian.

When it comes to browsers Firefox has 27% usage with the latest 3.6(.10) being used, hits come from FF 4 as well as 3.5(.13) and even some from 3.0(.19) with a few still on FF 2. IE users mostly use version 8 with some hits from 7 and 6. Netscape has a small amount of users. The most commonly used browser is Google Chrome with over 42% of visitors using it. Safari, Opera, Mozilla, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Android are also used.

88% of users have the site bookmarked or browse directly whereas 10% come from Search engines. Another 2% are linked from various sites.

Time is going far too quickly. Here are the statistics for November.

The statistics I'm giving here make use of the server logs and Google Analytics to show trends an information of all visitors to the forum.

Note: All statistics are correct as of 27th November, 12:07 GMT

So far this month the forums have transferred over 14 GIGABYTES of data, a decrease of 10 GB from last month but still 8 GB more than in January. This means that per visit each user downloads 14 MB of data through an average of 2.6 visits per visitor. This includes over 4 GB of bandwidth from bots etc. The decrease may be partially due to you finally going to school or some changes to our caching procedures.

The busiest day this month was the 12th (over 800 MB) and the quietest was the 17th. Interesting the busiest days of the week are Tuesday and Thursday with the quietest being Sunday. Most visits occur around 3am GMT (6pm Central) with the least at 12am GMT (6am Central).

According to the statistics the busiest country is the USA followed by the UK. We've also had visitors from Australia, Oman, Finland, Canada, Russia, Poland, Sweden, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany, Puerto Rico, Portugal, China, Latvia, Romania, Israel, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg and Japan.

The top 25 users shows DrakeFox having used the most bandwidth this month followed closely by Macid 0031 with Somebody at the bottom of the top 25 - a difference of over 700 MB of data.

When it comes to various robots and spiders Yahoo Slurp has used over 2 GB of bandwidth in its indexing and Googlebot has used 1.14 GB.

Most visits last between 0 and 30 seconds (probably bots) with the next largest visit being over an hour! The average overall is about 15 minutes.

80% of users use Windows with 34% using 2008 followed by 25% using XP and then Vista / 7 with 19%. Mac accounts for 14% of visits with all visitors using OS X. Linux is a measly 5% with the majority using Ubuntu, although Android, Mandriva and Fedora are shown too. Other operating systems include the PS3, Wii, Blackberry and Symbian. (It's likely Win 2008 it caused by school browsing where traffic is forwarded through the school's servers)

When it comes to browsers Firefox has 37% usage with the latest 3.6(.12) being used, hits come from FF 4 as well as 3.5(.15) and even some from 3.0(.19). IE users mostly use version 8 with some hits from 7 and 6. Netscape has a small amount of users. Google Chrome has 25% of visitors using it. Safari, Opera, Mozilla, Samsung, LG, Motorola, iPhone and Android are also used.

91% of users have the site bookmarked or browse directly whereas 7% come from Search engines. Another 1% are linked from various sites.

The statistics I'm giving here make use of the server logs and Google Analytics to show trends an information of all visitors to the forum.

Note: All statistics are correct as of 1st February, 12:04 GMT. Period reporting is for January, slightly late posting.

Last month the forums have transferred over 17 GIGABYTES of data, despite the downtime we experienced. This means that per visit each user downloads 12 MB of data through an average of 2.6 visits per visitor. This doesn't include over 10 GB of bandwidth from bots etc.

The busiest day this month was the 17th (1 GB) and the quietest was the 21th (3 MB). Interesting the busiest days of the week are Monday and Wednesday with the quietest being Friday. Most visits occur around 1am GMT (7pm Central) with the least at 9am GMT (3am Central).

According to the statistics the busiest country is the USA followed by Canada. We've also had visitors from the UK, Germany, Australia, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, China, Czech Republic, Latvia, France, Mexico, Israel, Croatia, Romania, Spain, Denmark, Brazil and South Korea.

The top 25 users shows Macid having used the most bandwidth this month followed closely by WingedZephyr with shadowfox at the bottom of the top 25 - a difference of over 900 MB of data.

When it comes to various robots and spiders MSNBot has used over 4 GB of bandwidth in its indexing and Googlebot has used 1.8 GB.

Most visits last between 0 and 30 seconds (probably bots) with the next largest visit being over an hour! The average overall is about 15 minutes.

84% of users use Windows with 35% using 2008 followed by 26% using X.P and then Vista / 7 with 18%. Mac accounts for 10% of visits with all visitors using OS X. Linux is a measly 4% with the majority using Android although Ubuntu, SUSE, Fedora and Debian are shown too. Other operating systems include the PS3, Wii, Blackberry and Symbian. (It's likely Win 2008 it caused by school browsing where traffic is forwarded through the school's servers)

When it comes to browsers Firefox has 50% usage with the latest 3.6(.13) being used, hits come from FF 4 as well as 3.5(.16) and even some from 3.0(.19). We do have images to. However, it's the PHP files which use most of the bandwidth and it'll be the sheer amount of visits we get. It may decrease a little due to the new caching methods.

I was always confused how each month I saw that there were netscape users but I finally got around to looking it up and found out that it had stayed in development a lot longer than I thought it had. (posting this via netscape 9 for sake of irony)

Also, question, what's a spider?

An automated "robot" which browsers web sites for some reason. In the case of search engine spiders it indexes the pages and allows them to show up on search pages.

Oh, neat. It's totally cool to think how much the internet has developed over the past decade or so.

The statistics I'm giving here make use of the server logs and Google Analytics to show trends and information of all visitors to the forum.

Note: All statistics are correct as of 1st November, 12:14 GMT.

Last month the forums transferred nearly 13 GIGABYTES of data and has so far experienced 99.85% uptime. This means that per visit each user downloads 650 KB of data through an average of 2.4 visits per visitor. This doesn't include nearly 25 GB of bandwidth from bots etc.

The busiest day this month was the 4th (over 650 MB) and the quietest was the 23rd (over 250 MB). Interestingly the busiest days of the week are Tuesday and Wednesday with the quietest being Friday. Most visits occur around 3am GMT (9pm Central) with the least at 10am GMT (4am Central).

According to the statistics the busiest country is the USA followed by Canada. We've also had visitors from the UK, Sweden, Norway, China, Russia, Germany, Australia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Hungary, France, Poland, Gibraltar, New Zealand, South Korea, Denmark, Latvia, Belgium, Brazil, Austria and Hong Kong.

The top 25 users shows Macid having used the most bandwidth this month closely followed by Kaya_0223 with Chris Lively at the bottom of the top 25 - a difference of over 400 MB of data.

When it comes to various robots and spiders MSNBot has used nearly 5 GB of bandwidth in its indexing and Googlebot has used 10 GB.

Most visits last between 0 and 30 seconds (probably bots) with the next largest visit being over an hour! The average overall is about 17 minutes.

73% of users use Windows with 45% using 7 followed by 15% using X.P and then Vista with 9%. Mac accounts for 17% of visits with all visitors using OS X. Linux is at 3% with the majority using Android although Ubuntu, Redhat and Fedora are shown too. Other operating systems include the PS3, Wii, Blackberry and Symbian.

When it comes to browsers Firefox has 38% usage with the latest 7, 6, 5, 4 and 3.6 being used, hits come from 3.5 and even some from 3.0 as well as the beta versions 8, 9 and 10. IE users mostly use version 8 with some hits from 9, 7 and 6. Netscape has a small amount of users. Google Chrome has 23% of visitors using it. Safari, Opera, Mozilla, iPhone and Android are also used.

86% of users have the site bookmarked or browse directly whereas 11% come from Search engines. Another 2% are linked from various sites.

The drop in bandwidth usage is not necessarily a bad thing, these shows that our caching systems are working correctly!
