Title: ThunderThylacine's Creativity Conglomerate
Post by: ThunderThylacine on December 12, 2009, 04:09:47 AM
Well, my creative bank might be a conglomerate, but here I guess I'll just post my artwork. Feel free to comment, I love attention.  ^_^

I call myself a cartoonist, but I like to push the limits of cartooning. I am working to improve my skills anatomy, and it isn't easy, but rewarding. My colour of choice is the humble pencil. I use Crayolas and Prismacolors, and sometimes any cheap brand I can get my paws on. I've never tried digital art in my life, and I'm not sure I want to. I love drawing with pencils.

My collection includes endless drawings of characters from my stories, and also commissions I've done for my furry friends. I'll tag them as I go.  :)

So, I guess a good place to start is my fursona, Thunder. This is the first drawing I ever did of her. Yes, I know she has two right feet.  o.O Dodgy scan too, sorry.

Thanks.
Am I allowed to double-post in here? :S

This is my favourite drawing of Thunder so far:

And can someone please tell me how to resize these pics so they don't look choppy?

You're kinda pushing against the rules here with the nudity, but I ain't gonna stop ya, this stuff is great. I love the expressions and the colous are quite rich. I never was a colouring pencil man myself, too much patience required. Staying within the lines was pretty much abandoned ten years ago :P

but yeah, great expressions, great image ideas. I'm looking forward to more of your work.

Oh and everyone looks better with flowers in their hair.

I don't draw nudity. Rest assured that that's as skimpy as they get. Unfortunately the best way to learn anatomy drawing is by drawing characters with very little clothes on, and I just love the female figure in art.
So here's some more tasteful stuff:

Leeuw the lion. A FN commission. I loved this piece, and I actually posted it to him! WAAH! Don't ever ask me to post you a drawing, even if it's of you! I just hate parting with my work! :'(

And they STILL look choppy!  >:(

I'm guessing te choppiness is just pixelisation. It depends what file type they are when you resize them. Bitmaps will go all choppy, but I dont think Jpegs will as much. But then this is wild guesswork on my part.

for the choppyness... have you saved as a .bmp or bitmap file? if so, thats your problem as it will get pixelated when resized... if not... im clueless  :S

anyhoo, really amazing work!  i also prefer to use pencils and am only just starting to get the hang of digital art....

would you be able to give a bit of help though? how do you get the colours to be so bold and not, sorta streaky or faded, whenever i try to scan my drawings into my computer they never look good quality, which is why i started to learn some digital art....

and yeah, great drawings, i love the bold colours  :3

Thanks for the nice comments, all. ^_^

Yes, my files are definitely JPEGS, I never use bitmaps. I've tried resizing before linking but it doesn't seem to help. I'll keep trying to figure it out I guess.

As for the richness of colour, well, all I can offer advice-wise is use good pencils and paper. I use Prismacolors, which are damn expensive for pencils, but they are the most amazing things to work with. But don't worry, you can get just as rich a colour lay-down with Crayolas. Cheaper pencils might not be as easy to blend, but if you are firm with your colouring, the results will still be effective.

Here's an example. I drew this with an $8 box of crayolas:

The best tips I can pass on, that I were taught to myself by the good grace of other artists. are;

 1. Be liberal with colour. I mean, go crazy. If you're drawing a fox, don't just find a nice brown and colour it. Colour it brown, then red, then orange, then another brown, then shade with another brown, then blend the edges with white, then highlight with yellow... Seriously, go nuts. There's no such thing as too much colour. If you plaster an area with several shades it will leap off the page and come to life. Try it.

2. Paper quality is MORE important than pencil quality. I spend more on paper than on pencils. You want a strong, thick paper, at least 160gsm, and as smooth as possible. I've seen artists do amazing things with textured paper, but personally I like a smooth page. If the paper is smooth the colour is flat and bold. Colour firmly, don't be scared of breaking your pencil, and if you have trouble colouring in one direction, crosshatch.

3. It might seem obvious, but use black LAST! If you outline like myself, make it the final step. Also, don't be afraid to shade with black.

4. I learnt myself, through trial and error, the best way to get your drawings from paper to computer. Scanning inevitably reduces the quality, but all you need to do is use a graphic program to adjust the brightness/contrast. Simply scan your drawing, open it in your graphic program, and use the tools to increase the contrast by 30 and reduce the brightness by 25. Well, that's what works for me anyway. Some scanners might be able to do it for you. Just muck around until it looks good.

Here was my very first drawing with Prismacolor pencils:

I still have so much to learn. So many times I have drawn a picture, stood back and looked at it and thought "That's it! Perfect!" only to look at it a week later and think "What the hell was I thinking?" Part of being a good artist is constantly trying to improve and never being happy with what you can do. Okay, I might be wrong, but that's my humble opinion.

HUZZA and colored pencils aren't humbling. I find it to be relaxing and sometimes people are amazed at what you can do with them. As for the pixelization, try bringing down the resolution size, anything over 72DPI for internet is just over kill. The nuidity, your like me, theres no naughty bits, but they don't wear clothes. But you are pushing it, it's really the lack of clothes and the age of most in here.

Your stuff is nice, I do hope you post more. I love seeing how other people do traditional coloring.

This was a discussion I would often argue with the IMVU's Staff when I was part of the Access Pass Council, since the "Furkini's" could give a nude-effect without showing parts if used with the right skins. In my opinion (but something that I cannot find a specific reference in the rules), as long as no "parts" are shown, the pictures you would refer to "skimpy" would be alright.

But if you are ever in question about anything, please do ask a moderator or admin.

The anatomy and coloring is amazing, not only that but your style of drawing.
