Title: Tips on making your own fursuits (old threads)
Post by: Thagrahn on November 03, 2009, 11:55:48 PM
I had an Idea for how to make a great set of realistic paws with claws that wouldn't take away the use of your fingers or end up with limp claws.

First of all the Tekko Kagi, or ninja claws ;) should be made of wood so that no issues at cons, and so they can be easily painted to the right claw color. They are a weapon :o so treat them as such.

Next use the foam to shape the paw around the claws of the Tekko Kagi, but make sure you can still move your fingers on the underside. Your hand should mostly be hidden underneath when you hand is flat or balled into a fist, but otherwise you should still have the ability to use your fingers normally.

I'm planning on trying this :$ myself, and will let everyone know how things pan out.

since this is based around a weapon >:3 , do try to avoid hurting others with it.

Has anyone ever found a nice paw glove tutorial? Most of the ones I've seen I haven't particularly liked because of the style of gloves or whatever else. I've been trying to make some gloves but I've had difficulties, and I don't want to waste more material. :(

Well, what exactly how?

Ones that more fit and look like your fingers,
or ones that more look like paws.

I'm actually hoping for something in between, actually. :P

I supposed I'd want them more "fit" though. I'd rather not have any kind of foam or stuffing in them, but I don't want them to necessarily look like regular gloves either.

Can't remember the exact video, I'm positive you may have heard about it, but looking around I've saw a video that shows: sketching around your hand on some paper, using specialised scissors (forgot the technical term, triangly scissors!) on fur after leaving say half an inch to an inch of extra material, repeating and sewing it all together with it inside out... I'll try and get the video for you, just let me edit!

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtdP4hSCdl0&NR=1

Looks pretty good, but what do I know?! :3 I was meaning to have a talk with a friend about this stuff anyway, but for further stuff I can't really look in. I have heard, however that cutting up plain shoe soles is pretty good. There's also using some other fabric sewn onto it as pawpads, which is how mine are done.

Hmm... That might help.

The biggest problem I've had is what to do with the wrist area, because the first time I only made it large enough to wrap around my wrist, then couldn't fit my hand through. Then the next time it was too wide and was all loose around the wrist. I bought some elastic to see if i could sew it around the wrist to help hold it on, but I haven't had time to try it yet.

You could try having a strip of elasticated nylon inside the glove where the wrist is that's slightly smaller.
Title: Furring the head?
Post by: DarkHorse_Steele on June 08, 2010, 02:23:28 PM
 :S
I finished my first head a few days ago. I used a plastic canvas skeleton covered in 1/2 inch upholstery foam. I viewed several tutorial sites and videos. I had trouble figuring out how to cover it in fabric. I tried using the tape pattern method as described in many places. My first head is covered, and is decent looking for a first attempt. But I am not entirely satisfied with it. I used black and grey crushed velvet, but it shows all of the edges and seams. I used it because it was what I had available to me.

I'm now on to head #2 which I am building for my girlfriend. I am using the same basic constructed method as the first head. Although I am following closer to an online tutorial. this head is not completely covered in foam (yet). I am trying to avoid this if possible.

The main problem I am having is fitting the fur to the head with out it sagging into all of the open spaces. I have tried the tape pattern method again on this one, and I can't get the tape to take or keep the shape I want. It is a lot harder fitting the fur I bought to the head than the velvet. I am trying my hardest to make this head look as close to as well done as the others I have seen online, but this is taking a lot longer than the first head did.

I have looked online for videos that better explain how exactly to apply fur, but They all seem to focus mostly on the plastic canvas and zip to the finished head. They keep skipping completely over the application of the fur. This seems to be the hardest part to do, with the fewest explanations. If anyone knows of anything that can help, I  would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have a Live Journal? There are quite a few communities on there for just fursuiting. TONS of tutorials and you can post any kind of question you might have, there are lots of makers on those sites willing to help.

I've recently got some extra money and have decided to make my own fox ears ^^
I have just a couple questions that I'm hoping you guys can answer..

1. What materials will I need?
2. Where can I get these materials?
3. How much will they cost?
Title: Re: trying to make fox ears :D

1. I'd go with some fabric fur, i.e fake fur, i'd never buy REAL fur.
2. I guess you could get it at a local fabric shop, thats where i got my fake fur.
3. Depends on how good quality you want and where you buy it, and how much you want of course. But for a pair of for ears, shouldn't be too much, for bout 200 SEK (~$28) i got enough fur to make myself 2 tails, 1 pair of ears and a pair of paws, and i still have some fur left.

EDIT:
Forgot to say that you'll need something to wear them (obviously), well, you can sew them on pretty much anything, i used a hat for my first ears.

Materials:

- Fur fabric (of your necessary colors)
- Something to put in them to hold them up (such as poly-fill stuffing)
- Thread
- Needle and/or sewing machine
- Something to fasten them on your head with (headband, hair clips, etc.)
- Maybe some glue as well, depending on how you construct them
- Fabric pattern for cutting out the shapes (can be made yourself or probably found somewhere online)

All of those things can usually be found at a craft store. Prices vary too much to say.

how do i make a fursuit with no sewing machine?  :?
Title: Re: how can i make a suit?

Basically...you'd have to sew it all by hand...which means it will take even longer.
Title: Re: how can i make a suit?
Post by: juut on September 26, 2010, 05:20:26 PM
I think it's safe to say it's almost no possible. There is just so incredibly much work in a fursuit that you'd be working on it for years and years if you have to do it all by hand.

Can't you buy a cheap second-hand sewing machine, or perhaps borrow one from a relative?
Title: Coloring Suit without airbrush
Post by: Lacers on November 02, 2010, 11:39:29 PM
I made a plain white fursuit for fun awhile back, but i just recently made a new sona who is mainly a white wolf but has some markings. I was gonna make the suit into her, but i dont know how to color the markings. and I have no airbrush. any suggestions?  :?
Title: Re: Coloring Suit without airbrush

Sometimes markings can be sewn in just using a different color of fur material, but it depends on the kind of markings. You wouldn't want to do that with like, leopard spots, after all.

Well, you can commision someone to buy it (pay someone else to make it for you), or just experiment. Im experimenting with making mine.
Title: Re: How do I make a fursuit?
Post by: Renamon on November 08, 2010, 07:28:52 AM
I do commissions! I am also less expensive than most.

Anyway, coming from a cosplay background, the thing I have found is that you need to find someone who has made a fursuit before! I have seen some fursuit type characters done by people who have never worked with fur and have never researched fursuit construction, and they do not look as good as they could. These suits would not pass the test with fursuiters. I find that it helped that I had not only made cosplays before, but that I had been around fursuiters and furry cons before, so I knew how they were constructed. Also if you can, go to panels at a con dealing with fursuit construction.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: RESEARCH BEFORE YOU EVEN START LOOKING AT FUR!

You will want to go on the web and look at DA pages, youtube, furry pages, etc. to see how others have made them and get ideas. Google is your friend! Also if you are making a preexisting character then be sure to get lots of screen shots, official drawings, etc. as reference material (say a furry anime character).

There are things that will carry over to your project, but remember every fursuit is different and there is not one right way to do anything regarding a fursuit, so be creative. If something works for you, use it!

Also, be sure to integrate a fan system into the head! You will burn up inside the head if you do not have airflow! I use CPU cooling fans and Duracell 9V batteries!
And remember cheap fur is cheap fur. You may get lucky and get some fur that does not shed much even at a fabric store. I have found good fur at a fabric store before, so be sure to look. Just be sure to pull at the fur if you can and see if it just comes off in your hands (a few strands may, but it should not be very much), and also look at the general quality of whole, and if it looks good and the prince is good, then buy as much as you can afford. Meaning, if you can buy WAY WAY more than you need. Believe me, you will make mistakes or want to revise parts later and you will be thankful you have the extra fur!!! I have bought a whole bolt of fur so that I would have all I need!

REMEMBER: You will think that your first attempt at a fursuit basically sucks in many areas! Don't worry this is normal! You can go back and do things like revise an area that needs redoing! I have made several versions of, say, a head for a suit before I was OK with it.
Title: making a Fur/Scale suit
Post by: ZombiezuRFER on November 17, 2010, 02:05:04 AM
Ello all again.
I decided I would definitely be making making a fur/scalesuit.  I'll be posting my progress both here and on my twitter, which is Zaktan Zanamu or just ZombiezuRFER. (not sure which, made it a while ago, only started it today.)  The suit will be for cons, some reviews on movies, and for a personal activity (troll slaying! >:3)  Right now I'm brainstorming, but I have a few features that are difinitely decided on.

This list will be edited with each new feature
FEATURES:
Fans in head (of course)
Digitigrade
claws
scaly (of course)
vid cam headset (goes on over the head)
claws are black
my fursona's color scheme to the letter
tallness (OF COURSE!!!)
Moving mouth (of course!)
Some Special clothes for Raving that go on over the feet and gloves.
Modular: Head, Torso, Spine and tail, gloves, arms, feet, and claws (removable for bowling)

Well, thats all for now, except for this badly and quickly put together MS paint render of the head (the file name is even badlyhashedspino!) If only I could figure out why it wont appear in the preview...

Nice!
I always thought a scalie suit would look good with stainless-steel or blackened steel scales sewn into a kevlar frame. Unfortunately most people dont want to make their suits bulletproof  ^_^   But other than that, I look forward to seeing it!

Ok, now I just need someone to help me get started with some links to tutorials or some in thread tutorials.
Question 1, what's a duct tape dummy and how do I make it?
2, what part of the suit should I start with? (suit is modular separated into legs and feet, torso, spine and tail, gloves, and head)
3, what materials should I use for the head?

1. A duct tape dummy is a manequin made to the proportions of your own body, it allows you to work on you suit without having to take it on and off all the time.  just look up 'how to make a duct tape dummy' there are tons of tutorials out there.
2. I always start with the head
3. I use plastic canvas for the dome of the head and PVC foam board for the jaws because it doesn't flex when the jaw opens and closes like the canvas would, then you need upholstery foam to make up the bulk of the head
As for tutorials there are tons of them out there just start haivng a look around and you will find everything you need.
Hopw I helped a bit

You can use spray paint in place of an air brush like so
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4582518/
or you can just freehand it if they are larger markings. I picked up the trick from Beastcub years ago and she still uses this technique and so does Beetlecat as far as I am aware

Thanks for that... Now I go to get materials!  I guess the second part to work on is the spine and tail.
