Forgive the huge racial colour brush smeared across the poll for a moment and ask yourself this question. Who are furries?
I recently read a speech made about social networking sites and the use of them in interacting with the wider world. It took the example of Facebook vs Myspace in the USA and how they had unconsciously been defined by class, race and age.
Now I'm not saying anything about the furry community, but i would like to see what comes out of this little experiment.
Obviously this is hardly scientific. Taking data from only one site which has people from different countries, different societies, while also painting people as White, Black, Yellow, Brown and Other when the difference between a white brit, a white bulgarian and a white turk is quite clear.
But you cant plan for every factor, and I'm not willing to put in the work. Maybe someone else is, but I'm not that guy.
What I'm hoping is that these fursonas are what influences who we are more than anything else, but who knows?
Oh and if you want to read that Facebook vs Myspace thing, i'm linking it, but beware, it's long and the presentation is the very essence of bare bones.

I like what you're doing here, bravo =P
(If you want to gather additional info just ask lol)
-
Thanks :)
Wow I didnt expect this to be so lopsided... I wouldnt even call it lopsided, it's focused as if it's a rule that furries are white middle class, with one exception.
Hopefully that will change.
-
Neat idea. Although something like this has been done in the past. (not on the forums though)
-
Yeah I just checked the Furry Survey out just now and it seemed to go along lines i expected. strong white male presence focused heavily on image and creativity. Theres lots of support to other furries, and ofcourse the sex element means almost nothing to the furry fandom. It's a part of it but it is far from important.
As for this forum survey, more and more leaning to the white middle class. It's very interesting.
-
more and more white middle and upper class people. I'm really quite saddened by this. Not by the white extreme, since that's to be expected considering this is an english speaking site, but because of the class trends. I definitely expected more lower class people
-
Well you gotta remember, most people are putting what their FAMILY'S class is, not theirs, I know for a fact I'm poor as dirt on my own, but my dad makes 90K a rear
-
but my dad makes 90K a rear
A Rear? that's funny. =3
-
AHAHAHAH!!! oh man, how'd I miss by 2 keys XP ah well, sure, he makes 90 grand per butt lol
-
True. I did my family's class (although, for younger people who can't work, they should put their family's class), I'd actually be white lower class if I was going by my so-called "earnings".
-
Well it would make more sense to put the class that you grew up in, since being a furry is most likely a bi-product of upbringing.
-
Well it doesnt look like any more people are going to be voting, so the results of my survey show that the furry fandom is a high class white society and that this site is completely and utterly white aside from me.
maybe this high class thing is why some furries over-exaggerate the oppression against us. It's because high class white people get very little persecution in general. But then this is from the opinion of a low class asian muslim. Thank God I'm not gay, I've already got enough to deal with
:P
-
It's not quite as lopsided as you think. I know for a fact there's more diversity than that here. People just don't vote. :P
-
yeah i know, but they didnt vote so they dont count. but either way, unless there is a massive difference in the actual members of this site, the lopsidedness is substantial.
-
Wow, Alot of White middle class have submited their votes?
I guess i come under that classification, either that or upper class?*shudders* :S
-
Actually, my mate is Chinese. He probably would have voted, but he can't get online too often, so yeah.
And on this site, it's middle class, not high class. At least, that's what I see in the poll.
I'm sorry, but just because people didn't vote doesn't mean that they don't count or matter.
Some people just don't care about taking polls, especially not official ones.
No offense to what you're trying to do though.
-
I'm sorry, but just because people didn't vote doesn't mean that they don't count or matter.
hehe, yeah i know they matter, but either way i just said what the survey showed.
And on this site, it's middle class, not high class. At least, that's what I see in the poll.
yeah that's true :)
-
Other, Middle Class.
-
You forgot to put purple people up there.
-
well that goes in "other" :)
-
What's the difference between "Black" and "Brown"?
I was confused, so I put Brown Middle class.
I don't think my fursona reflects that in any way, though.
-
I'm guessing brown is supposed to be something like Mexican or maybe Latino.
But that's just a guess. I don't really know.
-
Uh-oh... Oh well... (Shrug)
-
Yeah Brown was a difficult one, so I would say brown is hispanic and south asian, and possibly arabs and upper austrilasia. I know there's a big difference between them, but as i said before, there's also a massive difference between a somalian and a nigerian. I cant cover all bases or the poll would be huge.
-
I'm Chinese and German...no idea what to vote with....
-
go for either other or yellow cus we got none so far, though that is me messing with the results to make things more palatable, and multicultural (I've found that I'm a eensy teensy bit racist to white people.... strange what you find out about yourself.)
-
upper Aussie????? im confused now
-
Well aussies are definitely white unless you're an aborigini... (spl?)
-
yeahhh, but indigenous Australians live everywhere not just in upper Aussie
-
this is purely naming what skin colour you are, rather than listing every country or even every region in the world. It's very imprecise, it's very racist, but then i can't have a massive massive poll
-
You could have used continents...
-
an american black guy would say he's from america, he'd still be treated as a black guy. a second generation african immigrant into america would also be treated as a black guy. A first generation caribbean immigrant into america would also be treated as a black guy, and all three would generally live in similar situations. That's 3 continents with little difference.
-
That's a bold statement. So what you're trying to find out is the standard of living for people based off their skin colour and not national background? What's wrong with labling people from places? You can't hold a survey that says upper class American? Middle Class Austrailian? Middle class Asian? That is why I suggested continents since you didn't want to use countries. I don't really want to say this but I think your poll kinda throws the term "equality" right out the window. No offense, but it's like you're implying that an American black person lives or should live differently from an American or Austrailian or European white person by basing financial and material wealth as a result of skin colour with complete disregard for where they're from. Hence: developing countries, 3rd worlds, and the financially stable. What's worse is that you know it's racist and you still don't do anything to change that, let alone knowingly start a poll that could be offensive to people. So what if you can't have a massive poll? Is that supposed to be what you tell people when they get upset? An upper class white boy getting beaten up in an alley by thugs strictly because he's rich and, most of all, white? Or a poor asian who cannot find work because he cannot speak English properly in an English dominated country escaping war and terror? What I find a bit scary is that some people go along with this without realizing how racist it really is or even care to mention it which really tells me things about certain people.
I know you didn't mean bad intention when making this poll. But all I can say to you is if you care about the feelings of others or that you're being racist, then you do something about your racist poll. I gave you my suggestion.
-
That is a very good point, and i agree that dividing people up into colours rather than nationalities or even contental identities is incredibly crude but i do think that this is how society divides people. These are the categories that society decides for people. My survey makes no decisions about whether a black person should or is likely to be poor, or a brown person be rich or a white person be somewhere in the middle. Just that society divides people by these categories of colour and wealth. Whether a person connects the two and dictates what position one colour would occupy and the characteristics of that colour is racist and i do recognise that some of my comments have done that to middle and upper class white people and I'm not happy about that but my survey is not about my personal opinion on race. It's my personal opinion about the influence of society upon race and class.
