Title: Bass Gitah
Post by: Tyla on May 03, 2009, 07:33:58 PM
Yeah, Gitah, I just like to spell it like that for some reason.  :P

I've recently been poking on Ultimate-Guitar and looking at tabs to songs I like, play along with them, build a bit of speed (and resistance to the strings) into my left hand. I've been jumping around instruments (I decided to go Bass Gitah instead of Regular Gitah, and I just like Bass Gitah more anyway, and I'm a bit lazy when it comes to the drumkit partly because the back room is too small to have it set up properly), and now I think I've found one I will stick to. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any tips to help me learn, any links or whatever. I've asked around and I got "try playing along to a bit of reggae" from my mum, and will probably get a bit of a lesson off one of her mates. So yeah, thanks for any help you guys give me.

Study different styles of bass playing.

There's so much to learn; Funk rock uses slapping and popping techniques, metal uses the "driving" and "galloping" bass lines, there is Flamenco style finger picking, etc.

Also, practice both finger picking, and using a regular pick; I suggest Dunlop brand picks, because they're easy to handle, and generally aren't too fragile. I can't use a pick with too much bend.

Most important of all, have fun with it. When it becomes a chore, it becomes pointless.

Good luck.

Good evaluation blackmetal_bear. :)

Note for the finger-picking, it may hurt at first. But then you just build up calice on your fingertips, which feels like very roughly numbed skin if you have calices, and it will get you more immune to the thick strings. And no, calices aren't unhealthy if you're wondering. :P

A bit late now, this thread is quite old. :p Though I haven't been touching my bass as much as guitar.

Haha, maybe not the BEST thing for beginners. :P If you are beginning that is...

Practice some alternative, then head for Metallica. ;)

Yeah, I know. :p I did that on guitar too. (I know the mellow part of the Master of Puppets solo so far, but I've not got any control in my baby finger or hand speed to do the fast bit)

I'm considering some of The Cure and Gorilaz first on bass though.

Ahhh... I love trading solos with my brother playing easy blues pentatonics ^_^
He'd play his solo while i played backing for 12 bars, then we'd switch. Before you know it, two hours have passed and your fingers are bleeding  o.O
