Title: Something my mom told me today which makes me mad & sad...
Post by: Vee Katame: His Wolfy on November 22, 2008, 10:00:59 PM
Ok, my mom told me a story today that she heard from a woman who works as a warden.
apparently this guy from Virginia was hunting up here in Maine three years ago and he shot a black lab...
he actually gutted it and everything and took it to the tagging station to be tagged.
I guess for some reason he can't tell the difference between a BLACK LAB and a WHITE-TAIL DEER, even up close. :umm:
so yeah...the wardens were called and all that.
it shouldn't have even had a hunting license if he can't tell the difference between a dog and a deer, especially when there's a big color difference too. :twitch:

but, needless to say, I was mad and still am...and sad too.
poor dog. =[

EDIT: my mom actually did correct me and say it was a warden telling the story.

Omg! I now hate that guy,
I reckon they should take his hunting license away
and do something to punish him for shooting something so cute...

hey i don''t mean to be rude or evil or what ever you think of me but, if he accidently shot a dog it could be not his fault, like the safety on his gun failed as he triped or something

also if that happened, you wouldn't leave a dog in the woods, you'd take it back, you should gut it, other wise mabey a stray pellet hit the gut or intestines and that would be bad if it stayed in the carcass

anything that is killed should be tagged, he was doing the right thing taking responsibility by taking it to the officer, he could have left the dog in the woods and let it rot and get picked apart by scavengers but he didn't, he did the right thing

every one makes mistakes, but it matters that you own up to them, i aplaud him

It depends on your information source. He may have been senile and dumb, or he made a mistake and ended up a victim of circumstance. Like Megadeus said, it very well could have been a mistaken shot, and he tried to save the dog or put it out of pain, and didn't know where else to take it. It could be a combination of both.

However, I certain do to this deserves some kind of punishment in the way of a license suspension or something of those lines, and perhaps more severe if it was intentionally done, not mistakenly.

It reminds me how I wished that every 5 years citizens have to re-take a driving license test, after all the wrecks and traffic problems of older citizens end up in. People who can no longer drive, or hunt, safely should not be allowed to for the good of us all.

he thought the dog was a deer, that's why he shot it.
he didn't trip or anything.
he field dressed (gutted) it, thinking it was a deer.
he took it to the deer tagging station to be tagged as a deer.
the wardens actually had to tell the guy that it was a dog cuz he still didn't know that it was a dog after being so close to the animal to gut it and bring it to his vehicle.
he did say that he felt really bad and that he didn't know it was a dog when he shot it.
I'm pretty sure if he had known it was a dog when he went over to gut it, he wouldn't have gutted it.
he would've just called the warden service to tell them that he had shot a dog instead of taking it to the tagging station to be tagged where the person running the tagging station had to call it in to the wardens.

it was a warden telling the story, so I know that all of this happened in the way that I stated it.

Hmm... It could have been a dog, but what next? What if there were a child out there (Don't know why it would be there in the first place...) and he mistaked it for a... I don't know what and shot it? That would have been 10x worse.....

Hunting isn't bad, its just the scale and methods humans use that make it bad. A wolf pack only has a 10-20% sucess rate of hunting because they are armed only with their teeth, running ability and wits, but a human has a death stick (AKA - Gun) that (almost) instantly kills anything you point it at. And there are so many humans, that when they want to hunt, it throws the whole system out of whack. So hunting... Mmmhh.... I guess it COULD be ok if done in the right way.

Hm. That does sound quite cruel. Well, the best you can do is acknowledge it, remember it, and move on. What's done is done, and dwelling on it won't help anyone. =\ It is quite sad, though.

He didn't say that Hunters are bad. He said that Hunting is bad. Two different concepts.

yeah, please, no fighting in this thread.
all I wanted to do was post this story for people to read because it's sad and it's about an animal.
and I thought it'd be interesting for others to read/hear about.
it's not meant to make people fight with each other about whether hunting is bad or not.
it's just meant to show that this one guy couldn't tell that a black lab wasn't a white-tail deer even up close, until he was told.
which is just sad and that guy shouldn't have a license if he can't tell the difference.

as long as no one fights about it.
you can say what you want to say in response, but that's the end to that discussion.
ok?

ok

yo we may have tech on our side, but we don't accoutn for any species going out due to hunting, we have  laws, we can't kill more than what the conservation department allows, if we do we get fined, ok the conservation department stops us from tking them down we have laws too, we think about the enviroment too

A question, because I don't know fully how the hunting laws go. Ok, I know that there are limits on how many each person can kill, right? (Stop me if I'm wrong) But are there limits on how many are killed total in a season? But we have killed a few species to extinction, like the dodo or... what were they? Carrier pigeons? Some kind of pigeon, and whales are being hunted, too. But then again it is a combination of habatat loss and hunting, so... I guess its unfair to say its all hunters fault.

thank you i was talking about land hunters who hunt for good (like a lot of the hunters i hunt with go out get meat and donate the meat to homeless centers all over the place, and yes we do have a limit of seasons, ok we only get meat taken care of if we have tags, we only get enough tags for there to go around, the CD does tests to determin the pop in each area, and they look at how many ppl there are there, and they print out the tags needed and distributate them accordingaly, that was up in canada (read never cry wolf by farley mowat that displays this very nicly) but thats up in canada, here in the us we have rules and we follow them (some ppl don't but every barrel of apples has there own rotten one)

Ok. I thank you for clearing up that for me. Um... Yup. That's all, I guess. Wait! Are you a hunter? If you are, then could you awnser this: Is it nessary/easier/whatever to have a semi-automatic gun to hunt? Because I don't know much about guns, but arn't they like you can hold down the trigger and streams of bullets come out?
Title: Re: Something my mom told me today which makes me mad & sad...
Post by: PhantomStone on November 23, 2008, 08:31:01 PM
no a single shot gun is u fire and you have to reload (leagle to hunt with)
a sami automatic is where one shot is fired every time you pull the trigger (leagle to hunt with)
an automatic gun is you hold the trigger down and a continous stream of lead comes out (not leagle to hunt with)

you can hunt with what you want if i'm hunting i like SA cause if by some chance i miss i can end it fast with a second shot, remember what i said about tags, my dad was in a feild fulkl of turkeys he shot one only, he had a SA but he had already used his tags up, so he didn't take another

OH! I get it. But I still don't want SA's in D.C because you won't hunt anything except people there... Where do you get a hunting licence? I would like to try with a crossbow, but that would be hard wouldn't it?

you look in the phone book for  near by class to take, it takes 2 days of studying and test taking, idk how it is in DC but cross bows are illegal to hunt with up here in NY i took the bow test and the gun test, that was a ? on it

Oh. Well, my mom would never let me have a gun/crossbow/tank or any kind of weapon anyway. So... I'll have to wait until I'm older.

This is to those who don't like hunting at all.

Would you rather see a constant increase of deer in your area every year? I surly wouldn't. Hunting helps prevent the car accidents that are because of all the deer.

thankyou jesse, thats what i try to tell ppl at school, but they can't get past the whole killing aspect, to see that without us the deer pop would skyrocket and and soon all the food would be gone and they'd all die

They'll understand when they smash their cars into a whole family of deer and destroy their cars.

Of course, the ideal would be leaving the population control to the wolves. However, we killed and remove them too. Plus, when those pesky animals get into our noble human affairs (Such as suburbs) then they become such a nuisance, don't they?

Hunting is just making up for the shortcomings of our own population dominance. A way to make things right were if Humans had a population control against them, but that's pretty unlikely.

Thank you, Nikolai. Exactly my point. People need to be more responsible in family planning, and for teens make information and resorces avalible.
