Title: Need some advice on scales

So i'm working on a fursuit but instead of using fur or scale patterned fabric I'm wanting to use knitted scale mail. The issues:

• They don't make scales in the colors I need
• Aluminum scales are heavy and loud

[ii]the stuff is expensive[/ii]

I'm thinking I can use craft foam like when making foam armor. Only instead making individual scales which isn't as time consuming as one might think. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in something like this or can offer suggestions.
