I've had the idea floating around to make my first fursuit a blue griffin that's a sort of black mage character. Working name is Sapphire but is subject to change. I'll be posting progress pics on here as I go! Started in April.
I might be a little slow on her, due to working on a lot of other projects as well, getting materials in, and just in general being a little lazy and wanting to be a perfectionist....
Working on the base.

I'm basing the bird part of a gyrfalcon, and adding some small horns and other little things. So maybe I could consider it a subspecies of griffin. A Gyrgriffin? X3

Adding to it. Beak is badly proportioned here imo.

Very quick lineart over the head

I want it to be a little more on the realistic side than cartoony, but I'm still not experienced with head making so it might be a little fidgety.

I'm used to sculpting more with clay, so doing it with foam is maybe a little similar I guess ^^' I also have a lot of reference pictures on hand to glance at.

Awesome, can't wait :D

That looks amazing!! Can't wait to see more progress!

Going to use thermomorph (moldable plastic pellets) for the beak and other details. It's much more sturdy and light than polymer clay. It's actually kinda fun to work with, but it cools down fast.
Trying to make it falcon-y. Gonna mold it around foil, take the foil out and then build on to it and eventually sand it. This is just the top beak. Gonna make it in two parts so its (hopefully) movable.

Wow! I really like it! You don't see too many gryphon fursuits around.
I like Sapphire as a name, but she's yours so you do you, dearie!

Thanks guys ^_^ I have a basic concept in mind for her (general color scheme, species, clothing to wear with eventual partial, etc.) but she's also open to evolve and change a little as I go or how I feel about it.
Got some fur swatches in. Deciding on the colors she'll be.

Most are a long pile "shag", with a mongolian fur on the bottom left.
It's funny. I work at a fabric store but honestly, there's very few faux furs I'd prefer to use in a suit there, aside from this really nice long pile white one. Might be good if I ever make a partial of my fursona. It's also more pricey than online X3

Those colors look amazing!!
And yeeeep, I'm a frequent visitor to my local fabric store, and most fur there is either thin or just plain coarse, minus a few shorter piles or, like you said, white seems to be nice.
I've never seen luxury shag specifically at a fabric store, only faux fur or bunny type furs :(

Yeah. Some of it's pretty good for plushies, like the short pile stuff. Like I mentioned before, my store started to get in some pretty nice long pile fur, they call it "husky" or something. It only comes in white, black and grey tho and is $40 a yard (but we have regular sales on faux fur). We also got in this, I don't know if its short pile or what but it's a suuuuper soft plush fur that's the exact color of a skinned Totoro.....
I'm also contemplating experimenting with dying white fur a little.
Also several of my coworkers make/like suits and parts and stuff so it's neat to be able to bounce ideas around X3
