I've always had a soft spot for ancient history, but I've found it's really hard to get it to work right in a roleplay setting. I know there are TONS of fantasy roleplays out there, but I want something that's both realistic AND ancient (so, no magic).
That's why I made this thread. I encourage anyone who has an interest in ancient civilizations (particularly those found in the Mediterranean region) to play a part in this little project. If we have even a couple of people, it shouldn't take too long to get a dynamic, enthralling fantasy world constructed for a roleplaying environment.
I don't have much planned out yet, but I have a general idea. Once I get it fleshed out, I'll be sure to start adding some stuff to this.

I've always been a fan of ancient Egyptian culture, would that be something we could do ? :3
And yes no magic, I was very pleased when I saw that xD

I like world building
In terms of fantasy settings, I'm a fan of the woodland, mountains and fields type of place.
Would be fun to try something out with you though!

Lumix, It could certainly have Ancient Egyptian influence! Ancient Egypt is a little TOO ancient for my knowledge, I know more about Carthage and Rome, but I'd definitely be willing to research into Egyptian history. Perhaps Augustus fails to take over Macedonian Egypt, and there is an "Egyptian Renaissance," and the people revive texts from the Old Kingdom. Just a thought.
MrRazot, I think we may actually be able to institute both of the ideas, actually. Maybe the New Egyptians are at war with one of the Persian Empires with a campaign in Turkey, which does have a pretty large expanse of woodland.

Sounds good, I did medicine through time as my shp (schools history project) and ancient Egyptian medicine was my favourite topic xD
I'm excited for this now x3, sounds like a really good idea !

ahh, so more historical than fantasy
historical fantasy?
imagine a crusade just so happened to happen at the same time... too unrealistic? :P
Mount and Blade Warband did a very good job with the historical fantasy setting, creating a completely fictitious island where all the different groups from history were somehow together at the same time.

I'm glad you like it, Lumix! I'll do some research and post back with progress. Of course, feel free to add your own ideas, too! I love hearing different ideas.
@MrRazot: The time period I'm shooting for was about a century before either Christianity or Islam existed. Crusades are unlikely, to say the least! Something similar could happen, with the New Egyptians REALLY disapproving of Hellenistic or Abrahamic Religions and starting a Crusade-like campaign.

Here is the most basic summarization of the effects of Julius Caesar's death
In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated by members of the Roman Senate. In his will, he left much of his fortune to his great-nephew Octavus, who would eventually become the Augustus that colonizes Britain and kills Cleopatra.
In real life, Octavus was a very sickly child. In this timeline, we can imagine Octavus' death of illness, leaving Marc Antony to gain power. Marc Antony and his wife, Cleopatra, became the new rulers of Rome. Eventually, one of their children, Caesarion (the son of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra) held much power in the region of Egypt. As Caesarion grew older, he less and less wanted to associate with the Romans, and so he led an army against Rome, with the full support of Egypt on his side. He did not manage to conquer Rome, but he managed to force the Romans out of Africa and much of the Middle East.
Caesarion did not wish to expand his land any further. He backed out of the Middle East, but kept all of northern Africa within his kingdom. In the centuries following his death, there was a great resurgence in Egyptian Pride, and there was a sort of "Egyptian Renaissance." The ancient texts were revitalized, and the entire kingdom was revived with an official, central religion. Kes-Kemet (Kes coming from "Caes"arion and pronounced as it is in "Ques"o, like the sauce, and Kemet being the Egyptian name for Egypt) was a large kingdom, and a powerful one. It was not set on expansion of land, but preservation of ancestry.
How do you guys think about this? Any suggestions on things to be added or changed? (it might need to be figured out what species these historical figures are in this, we can do that later if needed)
(I;m not sure why the posts merged, I hope this shows up in everyone's notifications!)

Can anyone think of any good enemy nations for Kes-Kemet? I know that you wanted somewhere wooded MrRazot, but what kinds of woodland were you thinking of?

This is an awesome idea and I'd love to join, could I role as the Mongolians, I loved their history especially in 1206 when Genghis Khan conquered the mongols. Could we make it to where the Mongolian guns didn't collapse in the 1300's.
-
Hmm, I was thinking about having this being earlier, but your idea is really interesting, Lacar. I don't know what you're talking about with guns though.
-
Oops, sorry it was suppose to say huns haha, and ok I'm ok with an earlier era. I just like the idea of a more evil barbarian like culture such as the Mongolians when they were controlled by the huns.
-
The Huns were just nomads, though, and it was the Mongols who were in control. I think it would be very difficult to alter it so the empire doesn't become the Khanates, and with such a large amount of land, and such a loosely organized central government, I don't think that would be possible at all, unfortunately.
I think, if you're alright with staying earlier, maybe around 200 AD would be good? Possibly, this new Egypt could ally with the Sasanian Empire, in an attempt to overthrow the Roman Empire!
-
Ok I wasn't exactly sure what time zone you wanted but now I understand, I still like it though and would love to join still but I might need some slight help with this ancient I'm a little rusty.

That's fine, man. Mostly everything you'd need to know will be in the main post. And it's nice to hear you want to join!
