Hey guys, Isaac here, I've been wondering this question for a while now.
Most of you may not know this, but there's an urban legend of Japanese culture called "The Slit Mouth Woman", this story was to make sure kids get home by their curfew or at night.
The legend about a woman with a large part of scissors or some large, sharp object, who wanders around town at night. If someone ever encountered this woman she would ask the person " am I pretty? " and if you answered no then she would stab you to death with her sharp weapon, if you answer yes then she will take off her mask, revealing a deep cut, carved smile that goes from ear to ear, then she asks if she's pretty again, if you answer no you get killed, if you answer yes, she will carve a smile just like hers into your face.
But if you say "your average" or "your okay" or something like that, she will be distracted and confused for a moment, giving you some time to run or escape.
What I wonder is, why don't you just attack her?
I know, attacking someone with a sharp weapon is pretty stupid, but if you knew how to counter it, then shouldn't you be able to take her down?
I saw a video of a group of Japanese boys encountering the slit mouth woman, and they all just stood there, answering her questions, but there were four of them, four people could easily overpower one woman, even if she does have a weapon, question is, why didn't they just gang up on her?
But the REAL question is, if there's a group of people facing a serial killer or human sized monster in a horror or sci fi movie, why don't they even consider attacking it?
Dead space is an example, the protagonist Isaac Clarke doesn't run from the necromorphs if they get in his way, instead he fights them head on with everything he's got, why can't more people be like him in horror movies?
Yes I know their life's are at risk but nobody even THINKS about attacking them, even if they have advantages, the upper hand, or a weapon, it really boggles me.

I would think really this question comes down to fight or flight instinct. In the face of danger, people react very differently.
Sitting at home safe you may think that if you saw a giant monster you would fight it but actually being face to face with some huge monster you might not find that same courage.
Also, I have heard of that legend and thought it was awesome- Thank you for reminding me of it I now need to go draw her because I forgot how awesome and creepy the story of the slit-mouthed lady was. In general, I just want to go and read a bunch of mythology stories now.....

Wanna talk about really creepy things for the next while or so? I'm really bored.

Now here's something that is more mind blowing than creepy, but I'll say it anyway.
You know how there's a bunch of planets in a solar system, right? Well then there's billions of solar systems in every galaxy, and then there's billions of galaxies in every universe.
But if the theory of multiverse (multiple universes) is real, then there's billions of universes in one multiverse, but what if even if we do have a multiverse, what if there are multiple multiverse to create one omniverse?
It's really really mind blowing if you think about it, so many places to explore.....

If she can appear to any child that is up late at night, then I think we can assume that she can at the very least teleport or warp space and time. If she has been in folk lore for hundreds of years, she's either a restless spirit, a demon or immortal.
Running away would make the best sense in any life threatening situation (unless they have a gun in which compliance is the key) because then they have no range on you and are simply unable to attack you because you're not there.
If my first assumption that she can teleport is correct, then running away would be pointless and the best course of action would be to comply or fight back.
Fighting back isn't an option here at all, considering that she is most likely a supernatural being that may or may not already be dead.
The good news is that you mentioned it's possible to distract her with wits, confusing her and giving you the opportunity to run away. Running away is probably your best bet here.
I have a friend who gets depressed when he thinks about the scale of the universe.
