Title: What format to you guys prefer?
Post by: ZielZorix on October 27, 2016, 02:06:46 PM
I just have one simple question:

When you guys read other people's writing online, do you prefer it to be in story form or script form?

Could you mention/show some examples?
I have a feeling I know, but I don't want to respond unless I'm sure ^^;

Novel format is what you would see if you were reading a book.  Script format is like a script for a play or a movie.

Cool, thanks :)

Well, I've had most experience with reading novel-formatted stories, and I like how writers can play with words and use their imagination to create worlds and the like with those words, even making up new words along the way to -let's say- describe the main character's environment or the like.
But script-formats are also quite neat, because they kind of get more straight to the point what is happening and what is being said.
Yet I find reading the more novel-formats more fun. If I have time, that is. When I don't have the time and can find interesting stories with script formats, I tend to go with those.

Makes sense?

Indeed it does.  I am just trying to decide which format I should write things in for my FA page.

I prefer novel format for reading. IMO, scripts aren't meant to be read. They're meant to be performed (whether the performance is live action, animation, audio play, or comic book). To me, a script isn't a final or complete project. It's the skeleton that a project is built on. Or to pit it another way, reading a script versus reading a novel-format story is like looking at a highway map versus taking a road trip.

Are you referring specifically to your profile section? Or do you plan to write and submit pieces?

Write and submit.  It seem that everywhere I have asked, people prefer novel-style stuff.  Which sucks for me because I am so used to writing script.  I would love to have a web comic or graphic novel published one day.

Doesn't look like if I keep writing in script form that it'll get read.

Well, if you write in script-format and would prefer that, I would say go for it. You surely won't be the only one who prefers that style. Most people enjoy novel-types for various reasons. It's usually the style format they read themselves.
But I would say if you prefer to write in script, then do so! Heck, I sure would like to see that. I'm sure it'll get read. But with every artist (drawing, writing, painting) it can take a while before your focus-group can find you. So don't worry if at first no one seems interested, or only a select few. We all have to start somewhere.

(And besides, maybe someone will see your writing style and would like you to work for them for their web comics and the like ;))
