Title: RP trouble
Post by: Ara Av-Toa on October 04, 2016, 03:48:47 PM
I have tried to set up different RP's, but somehow they're getting few to no attention. Perhaps anyone can help me say what went wrong and how I can improve my RP ideas.

Rp's I tried to start up:
The Silver Crystal (https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=34581.0)
Keepers of the World (https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=34252.0)

RP that somehow just died:
Beastopian Tails (https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=32882.0)

It's annoying, isn't it? IMO, it seems like the RPs with the best potential get the least attention. Like with Stowe's RPs.

Only thing I can suggest is you take a look at successful RPs, and borrow ideas from them.

Yeah, I get the same problem. It might be because I keep making RPs where my character's this big, fat buddy guy who can take a lot of damage, and I end up making too many comments about how fat my guy is. Do you often find yourself in the same rut.

To be honest, I tend to prefer more simplified RPs. Maybe yours are too complex?

Sounds like a niche thing where all of the RP'ers need to have common interests.

I understand RP isn't for everyone. But simplifying them... Is actually a very well possible option. I'll think about it.

You dont need to simplify it what you need to do is organize better and find dedicated RPers on a more populated site that is based around RP more people interested in the subject matter is what keeps RP's alive if you have only one or two people who aren't all that interested you are not going to start or keep an RP going.

That's a... very interesting thought. And of course, true as well. But going to such a site wasn't my first intention.

When I RP, I sometimes find myself going immense lengths of time without replying. It's usually a combination of losing interest and just the whole thing losing steam. All it takes is a gentle push and/or a reminder and I can crank a few more out, especially looking at it from a different light.

Best advice I can give is planning out the major plot points, like say first your character finds a mysterious black book that points to a legendary town lost to the ages when cleaning his attic, calls his best friend over to look it over and discuss it, they pack up their stuff and set out. After a few days of walking, they make it to the town, descend deep underground, and uncover the secrets of said ancient town.

Now figure out how you're going to get to each plot point :P  I have used this plot on a few users. It usually gets finished eventually.

From what I gathered in my sorta limited experience with RPing here, sometimes you'll happen to start a decent roleplay at just the right time where good roleplayers are on and interested, while much of the time there's people who are barely interested or too busy for roleplaying outside the simplistic silly stuff. There's no clear time for when you get good, active roleplayers as far as I know, it's just by chance.

I think it's best to give it time. Also, make sure to not flood the board with roleplays and/or give up on them at the drop of a hat. Roleplayers may grow less trusting of your game-mastering and start avoiding your roleplays if they spot a pattern like that.

While detail is good, when one focuses on a certain thing too much it can get annoying, and even further, creepy and uncomfortable. The view can go from "okay, we get the point" to "oh jeez, is this just to get their jollies?"
Sometimes it's best to save the deeper details for your own imagination.

Oh! Ok. That gives me some really useful hints! It means it's not just me after all. But to be honest the level of detail in my RP's isn't that high.

There are people willing to help you write better as well. For example, I helped a couple of friends of mine git gud. What I had them do was have them type up a scene or chapter or whatever, and I'd look it over, offering pointers and ways the scene could be improved. Main focal points are showing, not telling, as well as gratuitous amounts of adjectives without going completely overboard.

If you'd like, you can contact me on Discord ([NTF]TheRedFox8#0032), or Steam, which is on my profile. That or you could PM me. I always like to help people who are developing a passion for writing :D

Mind you, though. I'm no professional proofreader. I might suggest things you disagree with or even be wrong on a lot of things.
