Title: Greatness of Iridescence [Closed]
Post by: FinalPam on September 27, 2016, 08:25:34 PM
[[OOC thread is here. (https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=34264.msg1910571)]]

The first recorded history we have is that the world was ruled by dragons. They held dominion over the lesser races with their powerful magic, demanding tribute and luxury. But just as all empires grow and rise, they must fall. Traces of the draconic empire are nonexistent. Dragons still live today among the other races. Magic left its mark on the world, giving its power to whoever had the determination to master it. It's as if the empire never happened.

But dragons have always been just a little bit more powerful, more ambitious. One has to wonder if they remember what it was like to be gods.

One has to wonder if they want their empire back.

A pale gray sky looms over you, no less bright for its gloominess. The cobbled streets are still damp from last night's rain, shining ever so slightly in the sparse sunlight. The humble two-story townhouses lining the streets are a rustic sort of beautiful, with ivy clinging to their walls and wrought-iron balconies hanging over the street. The morning fog is just beginning to burn away on this lazy Sunday. And lazy it is, with the streets practically empty.

Ahead of you, a large pink and blue dragon in a larger coat unlocks a shop and goes inside, a tiny bell announcing her arrival. There's a hanging sign overhead, though the fog renders it unreadable from a distance.

Raz was running for his life, having just escaped from his slaver, and although he lost his previous owner in the run.

Raz eventually ran out of stamina and collapsed in front of the Dragon's store with a huff, scars plastered all over his body, a leather muzzle and a set of leather mitts to accompany the scars, some still fresh, and a few still open

The dragoness doesn't notice the collapsed figure at first, taking care of some things in the shop. She meticulously straightens the displays- bottles of all kinds, herbs, strange figures and amulets- before turning to look over a window display of dried flowers. As she goes to harvest some dried lavender, her gaze flickers up to the dark being on the sidewalk, and her heart nearly stops at the sight. She stands paralyzed for but a moment before turning to frantically gather several bottles and salves. She tries her hardest not to take her eyes off the injured feral, doing so only to grab some sort of pendant from a high shelf.

As she opens the door, the softest of dings emanates. The dragoness freezes. She looks down at the feral dragon, mentally debating what to do.

She rebalances the piles of potions in her arms and carefully walks over to the feral, tilting her head. "Um-" she hazards a gentle tap on the feral's head. "-are you alright?"

Raz's eyes squinted for a moment and slowly opened, and he was caught off guard and he tried to push away, but pulled something and let out a yelp, a dried blood outline below where he was laying down, he then tried to get closer to the dragoness, feeling that he could trust her, and as he moved, his breathing was raspy and stuttered, and as he got closer to her, he started to black out, collapsing again, but was still breathing and alive... barely

"Oh!" She jumped back slightly, trying to assess the situation. "Sir-" she stuttered, before watching the dragon collapse. She immediately kneeled down, setting down several of her things. Taking care not to harm him, she removed the leather muzzle and mitts before placing them in one of the larger coat pockets.

"...Alright, then. Let's get you fixed up." She lifted the dragon's muzzle slightly, opening it by hand while she uncorked a bottle of burgundy liquid. She carefully poured a small stream down the dragon's throat, muttering some strange words. After the bottle was half drained, she let the dragon's head rest on the pavement. Several of the dragon's smaller wounds slowly knitted shut, and the larger ones stopped bleeding.

Unable to carry the dragon inside, she makes a quick trip inside for a couple of blankets before carefully placing one under the dragon's head. She kneels on another, watching over the dragon. After a few minutes, boredom gets to her and she pulls out a large, ornate book, covertly writing something in it.

Raz woke up not too long after and he started horking, coughing up a black-ish blob before looking at the dragoness, seeing his muzzle and mitts were off and he slowly climbed onto her lap, curling up in it, muttering something in his natural tongue, "Mommy~..."

She stiffens slightly as the dragon curls in her lap, putting away her book. She tenses further at the dragon's murmuring, gathering up her things. When she gets everything situated in her arms, she sighs before gently pushing the dragon. "Come on, little thing, it's time to come on inside."

Raz slowly climbed off her lap and followed her inside, looking around the room whilst he followed her, nuzzling her leg as they walked, him still having a visible limp

The shop is a menagerie of shelves and boxes. Bottles of all shapes and sizes line the walls. Dried herbs and flowers are strewn about, making the place smell almost overpoweringly floral. On the higher shelves, as if trying to be hidden, are what looks like jewelry and little statuettes. Off of the main shop floor, a hallway leads to a staircase, a few closed doors on the first floor.

"Here, I'll set a little place out for you." The dragoness bundles up the two quilts into a simple cushion, placing it on the floor between two stacks of boxes. "I'll get you some food after I get everything situated." She fiddles with some of the papers on the counter, looking a tad nervous.

Raz went to lay down, but looked at the dragoness and nudged her hip as he noticed something was bothering her, and again, he spoke in his native tongue, "Mommy?..."

She sighed and looked away, a strange, sorrowful emotion on her face. "Zu'u los ni hin monah. I am not your mother." she murmurs, turning away. A moment later, her face softens, and she smiles down at the little dragon. "Mu fod saraan. We should wait. Maybe you'll make a new friend." She looks back outside.

"And, you know, I do need to get that sign repainted." The hanging sign outside reads Grandeur de Iridescence, and underneath that, Alchimie - Herboristerie - Divinatorie . It is a little worse for wear, the colors faded with time.

Raz looked sad when she told him that she wasn't his mother, slowly limping back to the makeshift bed and then curling up on it, "Sorry..."

Neko jogged through the empty streets simply for the purposes of getting some excersise. Today she had on a green tank top, black short shorts and sneakers. The streets looked rather ominous today but it didn't bother Neko. She knew her own strength and she famous enough that few people would have the guts to take her on, especially since Neko could put professional weight lifters to shame.

As she moved at a brisk pace past all the closed shops, she noticed one in particular that caught her interest. It seemed like a spice shop and seeing it was open, Neko thought to stop by and pick up some tea for later. She walks to the door and goes in.

"Hey you open? I wanted to pick up..." Neko started with a smile but as soon as she saw the distress in the dragoness'seyes and the beat up feral dragon on the bed, her smile disappeared.
"...some tea."

"Ah, hello!" The dragoness stood up from leaning on the counter, horns bobbing a bit. "I do sell tea, and don't mind the little one here. Poor thing just needs some rest, that's all. My name is Miss Sucre Verre, though you can call me whatever you wish."

She stands and directs Neko to one of the stacks of boxes. Rifling through its contents, she talks to Neko as she looks. "I've got... some jasmine, some hibiscus, your standard green tea, a chamomile, some rose petal, and-" She grabs something from the box all of a sudden. It looks like a red tea bag. "And- well, this one isn't quite for sale. I must have misplaced it... Here, pick out what you want, I need to go put this away."

She pulls herself up before heading down the back hallway. Three doors and a staircase are there, two doors on the right and one on the left. One of the doors on the right is open, and you can see the end of a couch. Must be a living room. Another is cracked, with a bright light coming through. The door on the left is closed. Sucre walks down the hallway pensively, unlocking the door on the left before closing it behind her.

Raz saw the dragoness leave and he tried to go after her but couldn't get up as he was too tired to stand and simply rolled off his make shift bed, looking up at Neko before scrambling to get back onto the small bed, facing the wall to look away from her, scars on his body and recent stitch marks on one of the joints of his wing.

Neko wasn't sure what that red powder was but it sure looked suspicious. However Neko got distracted as razuel past by. She saw his scars and stitches and couldn't help but feel disgusted.
"Who would harm such an innocent creature." Neko dug into one of her pockets and pulled out a bag of home made trail mix. She pulled out a piece of jerky and kneeled next to Raz to offer it to him, while also keeping a watchful eye out for Sucre. Neko was not totally sure she was trustworthy as she seemed.

Raz flinched when Neko put her hand close to him, shutting his eyes and then slowly opening them after, looking up to see her comforting smile, hesitating to grab the jerky at first but then slowly grabbing it and pulling it into his maw, slowly nibbling at it as he held Neko's hand

A few minutes later, Sucre returned upstairs, closing the door behind her.

Neko, but not Razuel, notices that she forgot to lock the door.

"There we are, everything in its proper place." Sucre sees Razuel and Neko and smiles, giggling a bit. "Aww, you've made a friend, little one!" She walks over to the two of them, kneeling down and smiling at the little one before remembering her obligation. "Ah! Ms. Thompson, have you picked out some tea yet?"

Both Neko and Razuel feel as if there's something wrong here...

"Umm yeah..." Neko began but wasn't quite sure what to say, she just pet Raz's head as he seemed to want attention.
"...hey I know this is sudden, but I can tell this dragon isn't exactly yours. I know a thing or to about how to care for ferals and wouldn't mind taking him in." Neko being a technical pacifist really wanted to get Razuel out of here but would rather not resort to being hostile right off the bat. Sucre definitely was hiding something and whatever it was in that back room, it could not be good.
"...also what were you doing back there?"

"I was just putting things away. I have a small storeroom in the basement for ingredients that are sensitive to light, like crystals. Their colors dull over time if they're exposed to too much sunlight. And that red tea doesn't brew quite right if it gets exposed to water. We had a flood a while ago, and it put the first floor of my shop under a few inches of water. I had to throw out so many herbs..." Sucre sighs. "And I think it'd be fine if you took care of this little one for a while. Poor thing was collapsed on the sidewalk when I was setting up this morning. I had a spare potion on hand, which helped ease the pain and get rid of some of the surface wounds. If you want, you can- Oh, actually, there is something I should tell you."

She stands, walking behind the counter. "I can sell things for money, but I don't prefer to. I much prefer bartering- you know, one thing for another? It's always fun to see what I get for my wares. And I was going to say..." Sucre takes a few bottles of colorful liquid out from under the counter, along with some bandages. "These are for the little one. And, actually, I have a little gift for a little dragon..." She beats her wings once, grabbing something from the high shelf behind the counter. "Here you are."

The item is a small pendant, with the charm a detailed dragon's head. At the bottom of the charm is a small, glass, slit-pupiled eye. "It's just a simple token."

Neko was also very curious. Potions as far as she knew potions were a simpler form of magic that even someone who has no aptitude for magic could learn how to create. However the talk of crystals and the strangeness of the pendant all suggested that maybe Sucre actually did have some magical talented. Which was fine with Neko if she hit the nail on the head because so many people were afraid of magic.
"...I think I have something." Neko reaches into her pocket and pulls out a fairly good sized coin with what looked like magic ruins on both sides of it. Neko didn't know that though, it was simply handed to her.
"I was given this by some old lizard off the streets...don't know what it is but whenever I have it i feel strange, but in a sort of good way. You think it could be worth something?"

To the untrained eye this coin was just a really odd coin, but if Sucre really was magic she would feel it resonating with her. Any normal person would feel nothing, which is why Neko finds it strange that she does.

"Ah!" Sucre quickly took the coin from Moka's hand, turning it over in her hands. "This is... certainly fascinating. Yes, this will pay for everything." Sucre grins, eyes wide with wonder and excitement. And, another emotion, deeper...

"Right." Sucre remembers her obligations and bundles the potions in paper before placing them in a simple leather satchel. "I hand-make these bags, you know. Normally they would cost quite a bit, but for such a thing as this, it's yours."

Sucre seems to remember something, her eyes widening further with awestruck surprise. "And, and- if you or the little one want something else, you can have it. Jewelry, one of my figures," she gestures to one of the upper shelves, "potions, salves- I even do divinations! Perhaps you would like to see what awaits you in the future?"

"A fortune sounds nice and I could definitely use the potions. In my line of work I have to deal with plenty of injuries, mostly idiots that can't use the equipment at my gym correctly." Neko said and took the bag and tying it to her belt.

"So...how exactly does this Divination work? I don't use magic so I have no clue, which by the be careful who you tell that to. Some people in this area aren't that nice to wizards, mages or whatever people want to call those who use magic."

"Well, Divination's very complicated. And I know I've been on the receiving end of such prejudice for a while." Sucre smiles, a strange look in her eyes.

"But back to divination. There are many methods, but I use tarot cards. Here, I'll show you-" She walks into one of the back rooms- the one with the couch in it- and comes back with an ornate box.

Opening the box, she pulls out an ornate deck of cards. "I've already consecrated the deck, so we should get accurate results." She sets the box down on the counter and pushes a few things aside, standing across from Neko. "Here's how it will work: I will draw cards from the deck and place them in a certain orientation, called a spread. Though, actually, there's multiple spreads for multiple problems."

"A basic three-card spread explores dreams. The Celtic Cross spread is very popular, and sheds light on many aspects of your life. And I have other spreads, for astrological, planetary, birthdays, star guides... Or, perhaps, romance?"

Neko seemed fascinated by the whole concept and picked up Raz gently so he can watch this unfold as well.
"Alright then...let's get started."

Neko was not expecting today to turn out like this, but the old man that gave her the strange coin in the first place had said this about it.

...

Neko had met the man in an old pawn shop a while she was getting rid of some old useless treasures. The man instead of paying her, gave her the coin and explained.

"This coin believe or not has been passed through the centuries into the hands of many gifted people. It is rarely spoken of but it is said to have been held by the Emperor of the Dragon Empire himself, right before it all came crashing down. My life is coming to a close and the coin has already brought much fortune to my life...but the coin does not bless everyone the same way and can even curse you. So hold onto it until you know when to give it away...and if you don't the coin certainly will.

Neko after that had observed the coin she was handed and was going to ask questions...but the old man disappeared. According to people she had asked the man that used to run that ran the pawn shop was in fact not an old man and apparently it was actually getting torn apart to put in a new pub. The pawn shop had closed years ago...but Neko still had the coin to prove the man had in fact gave it to her.

Sucre suddenly starts up as Razuel paws at her pocket. A look of terror crosses her face, and she takes the coin and places it in an inner pocket before exhaling, regaining her calm countenance.

"Well, first you must ask yourself: what is the problem you wish to solve? Or, perhaps, what is the question you wish to answer? Though, sometimes, the question is what you're looking for. Here, I'll use the Quick Love spread."

She comes around the counter to stand next to Neko and Razuel. "The cards can change meaning depending on how they're facing, you know. We wouldn't want a flip-flopped spread now, would we?"

"This first card shows where you are now." Sucre says, drawing the top card from the deck and placing it face-up on the table. The card shows a wolf holding some sort of rod high in the air, with an infinity symbol floating above his head. "This card is the Magician... You're confident and strong, and hold great power within you. You're always ready to take action when it's needed."

"The second card is laid over the first card, with the top facing right. It represents key challenges preventing you from moving forward in your life. If the question has to do with romance, it represents problems that are keeping you from moving forward in your love life." Sucre draws another card, laying it on top of the Magician. The card shows a skull-faced knight riding on a horse as people in the background plead to it. It is labeled "DEATH". However, the top faces left instead of right.

"Ah, an inverted card. Inverted cards have reversed meanings. Don't look so distressed, the Death card isn't always bad. Here, it symbolizes that your resistance of change and refusal to move on is causing your problem."

Sucre turns over a third card, laying it to the left of the first card. The card is labeled "THE HERMIT" and shows an old, wizened dog in hooded robes holding a lantern and a staff. It is upside down. "This card symbolizes the problems you held in the past that affect your current situation. The inverted Hermit means a few things, namely loneliness, isolation, and withdrawal. Things are starting to come together, but the final card will show the future- what is to come, and a possible solution."

Sucre turns over a final card. This card is labeled "THE TOWER", and shows two robed cats jumping from a burning tower. Lightning strikes the tower, and it seems as though a crown is falling from the tower's peak. It is right-side-up. "Ah," says Sucre, pondering for a moment. "I almost expected such a thing. The Tower symbolizes sudden and dramatic change, sometimes even disaster. But the four cards together..."

"Here is my tale. You believe yourself powerful now, but in the past you had isolated yourself for your power. And now, you must learn to defy yourself and accept the great change that is to come." Sucre gathers up the cards, shuffling them before placing them back in the box.

"I don't know how the little one fits into all this. Good luck." Sucre walks back into the couch room, presumably to put away the box.

Neko and Razuel remember that the leftmost door is unlocked.

Neko looks at the cards with a dark expression and remembers a lot about her past that these cards show.
"...thank you..." Neko stands there for what feels like hours to her.
"I have questions...you know about magic right? The cards don't lie, I have strength most when can only dream about. When I was young, my dad took me away to train me and make me stronger. My power is I can never be broken and I always come back stronger...i don't know why I have it though. Your a mage, do think my powers are magic?"

RAZUEL: The door opens to a wooden stairway leading downwards. The lights are off, and you can't see anything aside from the staircase turning.

NEKO: Sucre shouts from the back room. "Magic is as magic does, dear. Even the most powerful divination can't predict magic itself. Think about it- can a computer running a game predict its own actions?" It almost sounds like she's moving furniture. "If you come back later this afternoon, I can talk to you about it more. We- oh, here it is- close at 6. Any time after that might be fine!"

RAZUEL: Your stone only dimly lights the staircase, and you can barely see anything ahead of you. At the bottom of the stairs, you can see boxes to the left and right. The room afterward is cloaked in darkness.

NEKO: Razuel stands on the stairs in front of you, dimly glowing. He slowly walks downstairs.

The wooden crate's top was able to be pulled off and aside easily enough, but it made a bit of a clatter falling down to the floor.

Inside the box was some strange jewelry. Necklaces and rings had their gems pried out, the jewels scattered through the box. Most of the metal components looked as if they had been partially melted. Any designs were rendered unrecognizable.

The dim light illuminates one wall; a row of stacked boxes, shelves, and old-looking chests. The containers are set away from the wall, leaving some space behind.

Upstairs, the continued, fainter sounds of moving furniture are still evident.

Neko had been following Raz and before he could go any further Neko picks him up and puts him under her arm.
"Bad dragon, you can't just go through somone's house and..." Neko having superior senses then Raz because she was half feline was able to make out a black and white image of most of the stuff that was in here. The jewlery alone was odd but the old chests and shelves looked probably close to the age of the coin and were probably filled with the same amount of valuables.
"...rummage through there stuff." A sense of dread filled Neko especially since Sucre was probably almost done with the furniture.
"This is a dragon hoard...we need to get out, now!" Neko turned ready to run back up the stairs.

Neko tried to casually smile and walk away but the amount of treasure that Sucre had unnerved her. Why did she need all that treasure? Where did it come from even? Neko held up Raz and look him in the eyes.
"I don't know what fate has in store for us...but it sure doesn't look good. Now that that's over, I wonder what your name is little guy." Neko says as she walks homeward.

Raz looked up at Neko from where he was being held, and he grabbed onto a low hanging hair and tried to pull Neko's head down to Raz

"Ow ow ow! That's my pride and joy!" Neko said and was now at Raz's level.

Raz pulled himself and put his warm soulstone against Neko's face and in the instance he did, he spoke to her through it, "Razuel...", his voice was deep, but still very much like a child's, and when he finished telling Neko, Raz let go of them and hugged Neko's arm as he drifted off to sleep

Neko feels Razuel's pendant start to... emanate. It feels as though the thing is suddenly seeping with magic. Something will happen...

Neko was so close to home but the magic stopped her. Her gaze became transfixed on the gem and despite a nawing feeling in the back of her mind she couldn't look away.

Raz stirred in his sleep, his dreams quickly turning into nightmares of destruction, and as he slept in Neko's arms, he made small whimpers and wiggled in their grasp

Standing in the plaza, the pendant suddenly flashes red. The statue ahead of you, a heroic soldier on a horse, seems to... change? The solder's expression changes from one of grim determination to terror. The horse's pose changes to rearing up and whinnying.

The pendant stops glowing, but the magic is still there. It seems to be having... wild surges?

Neko felt pain run through even her own body as this all happens. Her muscles burned, her organs seemed to shift but once the pendant stops glowing the feelings pass.
Neko stood there for a good few minutes before holding Raz tight and whispering calming words to him.
"...I need help...I need Anny." She heaved as she went to the front door of her appartment, trying to ignore the statue as she new that it was more then just a strange occurrence...it was a warning.

Raz continued to have nightmares,  whimpering and clutching onto Neko as he was getting more scared, seemingly not able to wake up on his own.

Neko gently tried to shake Raz awake as she pulled out her phone.

Raz abruptly woke up and looked up at Neko, lifting himself onto her, hugging her tightly, his body shaking in fear.

"It's ok Raz, don't worry I am going to call us some help." Neko start calling Anny.
"...hey Anny....yeah it has been a long time...something has come...something I can't quite explain over the phone...alright see you soon." Neko hung up and waited on the couch, petting Raz and just in general keeping him company.

Flying through dark alleyways and empty streets was Anny as by now she had shed her physical form. Any plant life that even got close to her ghostly body shriveled and died as she sucked the life out of them naturally.
Hope Neko is alright...this sound serious.

Raz continued to shiver, clutching Neko tightly, he then spoke in his natural tongue, "Scared... Hungry..."

Neko didn't understand dragon but could feel Raz's starved body.
"I will get some food for you, don't worry." She got up after a little bit and came back with a small meal, as feeding him a full one would just make him throw it all up.

Anny alighted on Neko's doorstep. Phasing through the door, she called to Neko in a whispery voice.

"Neko? I'm here. What's going on?" She looked over and saw Neko's concerned face and the little dragon. She tenses up at the sight of the pendant, feeling magic reverberate off of it.

"What is that thing?" she scowls, gesturing at Razuel. Her eyes settle on the pendant. "That necklace... where did you get that-"

The pendant flashes briefly. Any items that Neko, Razuel, or Anny are carrying feel as though they're a good bit less heavy then before. They do not float.

Raz had eaten a bit of food before Anny walked in, and when the Amulet went off, the food he had recently eaten seemed to float in his stomach and as it moved around, Raz put a paw on his stomach and fell to his side, groaning in uneasyment

Neko feels light headed herself as the magic didn't hurt this time but disoriented her.

"I got it...i got it from this dragon lady. Just...just wait till the magic goes away, please?" Neko says as she couldn't think clearly while the magic was active.

"I guess so." Anny scowls down at the pendant. "I don't care where you got it from. You should get rid of it before it kills you." Anny thinks, looking off to the side. "Seems like it's surging."

As if on cue, the pendant flashes. Nothing has visibly changed.

Raz clutched onto Neko again, beginning to hork and gag, but was just dry heaving as nothing was coming up, he eventually stopped and just sobbed whilst he held onto her, "Hurt..."

"I agree..." Neko takes the pendant and is about to toss it across the room...when she passes out.  The pendant roles out of her hand and onto the floor.

Raz laid on top of Neko, holding on tight and continuing to groan, still suffering from the pendant's effects, he then looked up to Neko's friend, a look of pain on his face, "Hurt..."

"Damn!" Anny looks over Neko, taking her vitals as best she could. "Well, runt, looks like she'll be fine. Just the surges. Gotta admit, they're making me pretty woozy." She looks back at the pendant where it laid on the floor.

"Was it doing this earlier, I wonder?" Anny muttered under her breath, partially to Razuel and partially to no one.

Raz was happy that Neko was safe, but huffed when Any called him a runt... when asked the question, Raz took a second to think, and when he finished he made a 'I don't know' expression as he hadn't noticed if it had before, "Nightmare... earlier..."

"You're not sure, eh? Well." Anny picks up the pendant, her hand going solid for a second. "When Neko wakes up, we're taking this right back to the owner. Maybe we can make them suffer too..."

The pendant flashes. Anny recoils, dropping it. You don't feel or see anything change.

Raz winced as the pendant hit the ground, now fearing this object, clutching tight onto Neko, slightly shaking as he was still feeling queasy.
