Title: Staying up advice?
Post by: Thisaccountnolongerinuse on August 08, 2016, 10:26:00 PM
Hi there, I need tips on staying awake for extended periods of time. Such as 48 hours. My record is 36 but that's it. Any tips? My original method for staying up was staying up on a school night. That was I was forced to be awake (I know it's bad for you but I've been doing that through all middle school and I've been fine) but now it's summertime and I got shit to do in the late hours. Any help?

Thanks

Just saying, it's not very healthy to stay awake for such long periods of time. I wouldn't really encourage doing that.

I am well aware of the side effects. But as I myself have proven that it dosent matter how long you stay awake it just matters if you sleep enough after long periods of sleep deprevation

I do not support the idea but if you need advice: do enough activities that aren't mentally or physically exhausting.
Make sure you have breaks of low activity but enough activity to not fall asleep.
Do not start drinking caffeine since you would then make your body used to it and thus needing more and more to stay awake

Your brain and body both need sleep. Indulge them.

My record is also about 36 hours also, but I don't recommend staying up so long. Your body does need sleep to function, otherwise we wouldn't need to sleep.
An old member here who's been inactive for a few years once tried to stay up for a week. Managed, but he says he ended up hallucinating.

You'll find online of a guy who died in an internet café after staying awake for 3 days. Rigor mortis struck and the owners were wondering why he was so still.

My solution? Manage your hours better.
You can literally work yourself to death.

Answering your question though, listen to lots of music, drink lots of artificial energy and keep your mind as active as possible.

My advice would be if you're looking at a computer monitor, or any kind of screen, turn down your brightness and look into a plugin called f.lux. It changes the hue of your screen to warmer colors to adjust to your lighting. The normal color and brightness of a monitor may seem like it would wake you up, but it really stresses your eyes to much and makes you just want sleep more. LIGHT exercise can also help. Just don't do this often. I get about 3 hours of sleep a night due to what im guessing is insomnia and  i usually have constant sleep hallucinations. Just the mild shadows quivering and the such. My record was about 35 hours w/o sleep, and i didn't eat for 30 of those hours. Probably why i gave in. Anyway, be safe about this.

Thank you. My record is also 36 hours. Which I'm trying to beat. What music could you recommend and or things to keep my mind active?

Thank you. Most of the time when I try this I'm looking at a screen. I too hallucinate a bit when I don't sleep well (which happens often)

I'm just curious why you want to.  Is it like a George Mallory "because it was there" sort of thing?
I have a problem staying awake for normal periods of time due to a medical issue.  I have pills that are normally prescribed to narcoleptics, but some college students would use them to cram for tests.  I don't take them (it's not harmful to not take them), didn't like the side-effecs, and I wouldn't suggest them for you. Drugs are bad mmmkay? ;)

I did have a bad experience staying up.  I was afraid I would miss a flight that was leaving really early in the morning.  So instead of going to bed, I stayed up all night.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  Wasn't that difficult I was a night owl* and had insomnia at the time (quite the opposite of how I am now).  So I was awake for the plane and we had a layover. Unfortunately this was during the winter and flights can be delayed due to weather.  An 8 hour delay.  And those airport seats, there is no way to fall asleep in those (for good reason).  So this screwed up my sleeping rhythm something fierce.  Add jet lag to that and I found myself sleeping in fights all throughout the trip.

*Owls are nocturnal... why do we call them "night owls"?

Sorry to hear, man. And as for your first question I really don't know. When I was in 5th or 6th grade I was finding out about creepypastas. They scared a lot and I refused to sleep until the sun was up out of sheer paranoia. I was up till 5-6 am getting 2-3 hours of sleep every night. This sort of stuck and I stay up with a bit of paranoia and just to prove that I can stay up for a while. I find it an achievement for some reason. And I probably won't when I go to college. I really don't like sleep for some reason. My dreams are too unpredictable. An as for the Owls they sleep during the day and work at night. I guess the night owls means they are up when the owls are.
