Title: Capitalization. If you don't use it, don't look at this.
Post by: Nishjin on August 07, 2016, 02:10:35 AM
It REALLY urks me when people don't use punctuation, capitals, or correct grammar/spelling. Most people would call me a grammar Nazi, but I don't really correct them. I just kind of silently go about my business. But for everyone who cares to listen, I'm going to list off the reasons I think those things are important. Warning: Healthy doses of sarcasm.

1. It's disrespectful.
If you don't want to take the time to hold down shift or, if you're on a phone, press the caps lock while you're typing, then why are you here? Why don't you want to spend the two extra seconds it takes to make it easier for us to read?

2. It makes people think you're five years old.
I've seen quite a few people who I thought were around five or six years old because they had bad grammar, didn't use punctuation, etc. I saw a picture of them, and they were like 25! I'm not out of high school yet, and I have better grammar than you. It's at least excusable when you're 10, but not if you have an education above mine.

3. It's irritating.
This one is self explanatory, but I'll explain it anyways, because this is my rant. I inwardly groan every time I see a post that says something resembling this:

i really like that too. its really good that they did that

Now, there's many things wrong with this, but how did it make you feel when you read it? I had to force myself just to write it. Besides the fact that I only used punctuation when I absolutely HAD to end a sentence, I didn't capitalize any of it or put the apostrophe in 'its'. I can forgive the apostrophe mistake, since it's a mistake plenty of people make. But come on, how hard is it to press the period button one more time, to hold shift twice, and to refrain from using the word "that" three times in two sentences?

Anyways, that's my rant. Comment if you like, I don't mind. But if you use bad grammar on a comment you can bet your *insert valuable thing here* that I'll correct you.

I hate it too, honestly.

Yes, I make grammar mistakes, but that's okay.

Well, I usually do use it...

But I do not like people who actively search for something and comment the correct spelling, Especially when people are Dyslexic or don't understand english very well, I have a very good friend whom is Dyslexic, And he has been Corrected on and offline and has stated to me that It get's very annoying, I'm not stating that this is you Nishjin.

I.E: Don't be a **censor**, Suffer In silence or kindly point it out.

Again, Not saying this pertains to you Nishjin.

I try to point it out, yo, I do. It really pains me too! Im like UGH IS THIS PERSON 10 OR NOT CARE ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION IANIANINIASD:ASNOASD

So, yyeah, I mean, I can take it until you talk like some person who literally goes from sentence to sentence without ever using any kind of signal. Like What the heck, how am I supposed to understand you again..?

I was going to write a long paragraph, but on second thought lets just drop this quote here instead.   :P

"If I come across a person who seems to completely ignore the existence of apostrophes and capital letters and types things like "im an eagle and im typing with my talons, so dont make fun of me cuz this is hard," I like to imagine that they actually are an eagle typing with their talons.  It would be a hassle if you had to hop in the air and use your feet to karate-chop two keys simultaneously every time you wanted to use the shift key to make a capital letter.   Also, eagles lack manual dexterity, so I can understand why they'd want to leave out apostrophes.  Eagles are all about efficiency." I really hate it when people type like that too. A lot of times, I really want to correct them, but I don't want to be called out as a grammar nazi. I also really bugs me, when people use slang like "cuz, u, r, ur", stuff like that. I mean sure, I use things like "wanna" and "gonna", but that's also the extend I go to.
Sometimes, I've even met people that write without commas, without capitalizing "I", when talking about themselves. Using those stupid slang word. And to top it all off; they write without! Freaking! Periods! Like, how in the world am I gonna understand what you're writing? When I see people writing like that, all I imagine is them just being a robot, speaking the sentence in a monotone, quick go.

I feel you on this one, Nishjin. I guess I kinda ranted a bit myself there.

People are often surprised that I write out all my words in text messages.  I understand that text are suppose to be quick and short, but I was brought up to spell correctly.  I would only use word "ain't" and use double negatives to convey an expression, I don't actively use them in conversation.  I despise the lack of capitals and abhor lack of punctuation.  The last one is a pet-peeve, I have a hard time following what the person is saying when there is no break.
I've read numerous stories online and it's very annoying if it is all one long paragraph with no breaks.  Even worse if they have dialogue. When someone else speaks, you start a new line.  This should not be rocket science!

I do have my own faults though.  I tend to overuse ellipses and parentheses, and question if I should use a comma or semicolon.  I know when to use it, but I second-guess myself at times.

Sadly, my spelling has deteriorated over the past 6 years and if I am alerted by the squiggly line that a word is misspelled I try to correct it.  If no known spelling works, I look it up in a separate tab.  Also, I youtube pronunciations so I sound like I know what I'm talking about.
Double-edged sword: over capitalization.  It's very confusing when A Person Writes Like This.  I've seen it happen and it's almost as bad as no punctuation.

Writing well is quickly becoming a lost art. I am so glad to see this thread. If I see a post, comment, or whatever written with poor grammar, punctuation, and capitalization then I am inclined to ignore it entirely. If somebody doesn't frame their words intelligently then I will just assume that what is written is unintelligent and ignore it. Sometimes that might backfire and I will miss something good, but usually it doesn't. Bad writing habits are like the canary in the coal mine when it comes to what I should and shouldn't bother reading.

Honestly, the lack of capitalization is what makes text unreadable to me. Like, completely. Also the lack of full stops. I can read text if it has no apostrophes in it, no commas, but lack of that two things makes me go like: "Alright, this looks like Enigma to me, I completely can not read this."
