It seems as though I always see furries in groups (as shown by their fake tails, ears, collars and whatnot), how do they actually meet and stuff? Wouldn't it be weird to introduce yourself as one because of all the negative connotations?

I think it's coincidental/ accidental. Both of the furries I know I met through accidents, and coincidence. >.> I think the trick is to hint at the Furry fanndom and see how they react to it. Like insult it and see how the other person reacts. If they add onto your insult that's a furry hater. If they're neutral about it, they might not be a furry but they're alright with it. If they get annoyed that you insulted the furries, they're most likely a furry.
I also might've figured out someone possibly being a furry through their friends...[ but the conversation came up only because I showed the group a sketchbook full of furries I drew >.>] and so the other person is like so I guess you're a furry? And the other person is like, you were drawing tons of wolves not too long ago. And the person tried to deny it lol. Of course you probably don't want to do that, but instead mention furries and stuff in random conversations and see what happens.

I met mine at a local furry convention held every year. I met so many people its great seeing them each year at the con. Only a few I met were really cool and we all get together once a week and just chill and grab food or drinks. We dont dress up going out in public. When we're together we're "normal" people outside the house or conspace lol
I think cons are the best place to meet other furs. Meeting someone online and then meeting them in person sketches me out.
My oldest friends from high school and college arent furries yet but Im slowly corrupting them >:3

The only furry I have met offline was through sheer happenstance, so I am guessing you might not want to be overly reliant on that method.
As has been said, try cons. I have never been to one so I am obviously no expert, but a convention center stuffed with other furries is probably your best shot at making some friends.

the best place to meet furs are small bbq meetings or bowling meets. they are not that big and evryones nice

I think the best way of making furry friends is at forums and chats, and for people like me who love to make friends and meet new people through the Internet. We don't have to worry of those negative connotations, we have to just ignore them and convince the furry haters and the rest of the society that we're just normal people, but with particular likes and interests.

I've met quite a few furries at the library, actually. (Not sure if it's just here, but furries seem to hang out there)
Most of the time either they saw me on TFF and were all like, "Yo dawg, you're a furry? Dayng, dat perty kewl. We be furries too, yo."
A few times though I saw people drawing and went up to them really bluntly and said, "Hey man, you a furry? Cause if you is, das pretty dope."
Once I actually met a fursuit makers though, and ended up buying a head from them.
tldr; Go to the library.
P.S. I don't know what tldr means.

I told my best friend about furries and now she is one. Maybe you can show some of your friends the fandom if they aren't rude about furries and stuff. Local conventions are good too! Just wear a badge! I hope things go well for you!
