Title: Going to make my first fursuit. Tips? Tricks?
Post by: Edgar on July 08, 2016, 01:26:12 AM
I'm gonna make my first fursuit in a couple months. I haven't ordered any supplies yet but I have a really good idea on what I wanna get.

Any tips that you would give to a first time fursuit maker? I've made sure to read up every tutorial from veteran fursuit makers I can soak up but I'm wondering if anyone has any one-on-one advice?
Not just me reading a tutorial made for every fursuit ever XD

My fursuit is a Sergal Angel Dragon. I was going to go for a semi-realistic cute look!

I'm always happy to answer questions! It's a very broad topic, but I can help you with specifics whenever you need! I've made 2 suits so far, one realistic resin and one foam toony :)

Do you have any advice for furring a head? I've seen the tape method used a lot, where you tape the entire head and cut out the pieces so you know exactly how to cut your fur. Is that the best method? (and do you have any recommendations for what kind of tape I should use if you know?)

The tape is what I go with. If you go with foam, stick the tape to your clothes a couple of times, so it isn't as sticky and tears the foam. Resin you don't need to worry about it :) I like duct tape, but masking tape is also a good choice, which I might use for my next head. Make the tape be in small strips so you can make it go over the curves and dips on the head without getting bumps :) Then mark where your patterns are, label the colors and fur direction (normally away from the nose and moving up the ears and down the neck) then you can use a sharp knife, like a box knife or an exacto knife, and scissors to cut along the head. I also put toilet paper on the sticky side of the tape after its cut out, so it doesn't stick to itself :P

Add a bit of seam allowance around the edges of the tape, and hand stitch the peices together, and once it fits the head like a glove, I like gluing with hot glue around the nose, mouth, eyes, and dots everywhere else to keep it in place. :) I also have a bit hanging over the bottom 'neck' bit of the head, so I can sew the neck piece to it without it being as much of a hassle :P

Okay wow! Thank you so much for the advice! What's the best way to attach the head to your head? I was thinking about using a balaclava on the head, so could I just attach the head to the balaclava or would that not give it enough support???  @.@

I've never done a balaclava, I think they're too close XD I use a bucket head, following this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KcGVeozrNg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KcGVeozrNg)
I think the air can get around a bit better too, and you can make more vents in the ears and such :) And I can make around the neck a bit bigger as well https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=32932.0 (https://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=32932.0)
