Title: First Fursuit- I need help along the way!
Post by: Andy on May 31, 2016, 12:53:55 AM
Working on my first fursuit, modeled after this guy:

and so far, I have this:

It's not what it should be and will take a ton more tweaking. He doesn't even have a bottom jaw  XD
(https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/13308534_245639142481879_6213488289362986211_o.jpg)
this is the vision I have for it. Anyone else care to give me some pointers? I don't really know what to do to make it look better.

It looks really good so far! My foam head I had to completely take off the muzzle and lop off a chunk because it was too long :P
Can you post a profile pic of the head? The ridge connecting the brows and muzzle look good, but a side view would help show more of it!
Maybe smooth out the tip of the ridge (by the brows) to fade more into the head? And will you be adding cheeks after you put the jaw on? ... ooo and what expression are you going for? There's a few good diagrams for different expressions I can post for you!

That looks awesome!!!! Maybe widen the band going vertical near the outside of the eye/cheek and connect it to the band going toward the muzzle, but other than that, it looks good! The fur hides a lot of stuff anyway, so you can always just pull the fur over parts that aren't quite smooth :)

updates: where should I go next?

camera died in the middle of that video but 1 second is better than 0 i guess

I want to give him follow me eyes and change the ears. What other methods for ears are there?
so this isn't the best picture but he also has no chin!!! I don't know how to remedy this because his chin is so close to mine that I worry it will make taking the head on and off difficult.
Also, mouth! Where do I even start? I was going to use cardboard with pink fleece, but now I'm leaning toward a model magic mouth with sculpey and epoxy teeth. What do you recommend?
Title: Re: First Fursuit- I need help along the way!

Maybe smooth out the edges now, adding bits of foam here and there to smooth up the cheeks and whatnot. And I just used foam for the teeth and glued fabric over those, since it's lightweight and the same material as the head :) Don't use cardboard for any part of the head; it will get soggy, even if it's the teeth and they're covered up, and they can grow mold, which is very bad for your health.
I just lined the inside with black felt and sewed a tongue with two pieces of fleece.

A thing for ears could be to put up a pace of foam uncut, and trace where the ears should go while its on the head, with the ear curve and whatnot. I saw a tutorial online, just search ear for fursuits :)
Mot suits I've seen don't have a chin, since most animals don't have one :) It's just the neck right after the head ends.

It looks great so far though!!

put in my eyes! Gotta mess with those some more, and I'll be sewing myself a mask underneath and a removable moving jaw mechanism. I'm going to take off a lot of his snout and the foam around his eyes and rebuild it.

hey friends! Just made an update video ft Shitty Camera Mic and Me Mumbling About How Bad It Looks. If you could watch it and give me some feedback that'd be great! I'm almost done, I'm going to be buying the fur soon but I feel like it still needs some work.

Here's a good read for carving/padding a smile: http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5614799.html (http://fursuit.livejournal.com/5614799.html)  maybe add more of a ridge along the bottom of the eye, slanting upwards a bit. (I'll edit with a picture showing where I'm talking about when I have the time :) )
Foam jaws don't move nearly as much as resin ones, but if you're able, maybe put another thin layer of foam where the jaw touches your chin. It'll be a bit more sensitive, but be careful that you don't tear the jaw by padding it too much!

It doesn't look too canine, I just google searched images of feline foam bases, I'm sure it'll look better once you smooth it out! https://www.google.com/search?q=feline+foam+base&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiq8533xKfNAhVBL1IKHXJjAaIQ_AUIBygC (https://www.google.com/search?q=feline+foam+base&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiq8533xKfNAhVBL1IKHXJjAaIQ_AUIBygC)

May I just say: Your eyes look amazing. (Of the fursuit head, if anything xD) They are proper follow-me-eyes. As you say in the video about the mobility of your moving jaw, I agree. As for what I -personally- know about foam fursuit head, is that the mobility is indeed less than, say resin based heads.

I think what makes it look rather canine at the moment is its nose. The base/build is pretty feline for the rest though. I think it you start furring the head pretty soon, and there is less attention to the nose, I think it will be fine. I think. But not sure ^^;

Personally, the ears seem fine to me.

(Aaaand I just read Nori's reply XD Seems we agree on the moving jaw part :P)

(brain sync :P)
Here's how mobile my resin head is after padding the lower jaw a bit under the chin. They aren't really -that-  mobile unless you exaggerate your jaw movements, which is what most people do anyway to get that effect, at least what I've seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXSj3k1Pjk4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXSj3k1Pjk4)

I ripped off the nose this morning and am planning on doing some sort of foam+felt thing, or embroider it on after fur, wider and of course more cat like. I've got a foam holder there for the time being, not sure if that's what i'll use finally or not. I trimmed the ears a bit and have been filling in holes and gaps and trying to make it as smooth as possible (not sure if that's even necessary, i just am doing it for fun at this point). I'll post pictures tomorrow (hopefully. just started a big art project and i want to finish that).

I also ordered my jacket today! http://www.ebay.com/itm/251690618077?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=550597233628&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251690618077?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=550597233628&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) got the black and red. I'm going to try to embroider the Caravan Palace logo on the breast just as a personal touch.

I also starting trying out a smile. I plan on having two sets of eyebrows which i can velcro on and off, for a smug look and a happy one. If I do that, I'll also make removable felt eyelids to go with my smug eyebrows, since I feel like that'd be more in character.

That jacket looks awesome! The eyebrows sound neat, I think More Fur Less does a similar method, just flipping the eyebrows under and moving them a bit for different expressions. Good luck, it sounds neat!!!!

So far, so good. Nice to see how fast you're making progress :)

As for the jacket: I personally always wanted something like that for yeeeaaars. One day...

Progress so far! Almost time for fur :>
Put in my jaw and smoothed out the shape a LOT. Still have some work to do on the back of his head and blending the ears into the head better.

before putting on fur I'm going to line his smile with black felt.

yeah! I'm really digging this project and I'm very confident in it for a first try. Usually, my crafts come out garbage but I think I know why this one is different:
1) Rather than skimping with just whatever supplies I happened to have in the house, I actually went and sought out the proper materials.
2) I didn't take shortcuts. I'm always looking for hacks on how to make X material dry faster, how to hold something in place while I did something else; and for this project, I sat and took all the time I needed. When I got to the second stage (check out my progress pictures), I wanted to put fur on it because I wanted to have the finished product. Instead of focusing on HAVING  a head, I enjoyed just making it instead.
3) I used my resources. Forums, references, everything. Instead of half-assing it blindly, I researched everything carefully to make sure I wasn't ruining my project.
Now that I've written it out, those are actually 3 really good tips for building a fursuit. I think I'm gonna save it somewhere.

Taped him up so I can figure out how much fur I'm gonna need. Am I doing this right? any suggestions for markings/cutting it? Is there another way I'm supposed to be doing it and I should redo it? I kind of did this one blindly.

As long as the tape isn't too sticky, you should be fine :) I use an exacto knife to cut my pieces out, its not a huge deal if you cut into the foam a bit, just re-glue it.

successfully taped and untaped my head! Then I sat outside and watched traffic in it. Got a lot of funny responses. Highlight of my day.

Haha, glad to see it's going so well, keep it up :3

I see on some patterns of the head you indicated an arrow for the fur direction, on other patterns it seemed you didn't. Just be sure you do it on all of the patterns, just in case ^^
(If you haven't already ;))

got my hoodie and balaclava today! I've been wrestling with the balaclava and the jawpiece of my fursuit all night and I'm giving up for now. Also permanently installed my eyelids and glued in a temporary nose for reference. I'm going away till friday and hopefully next weekend will have my moving jaw sorted out!

THREAD REVIVAL!!!!!!

So, I've been in a program for the last 4 weeks, living at a local college and taking classes and all that good stuff. I didn't get to work on my suit at ALL, but I'm home now and I got all my fur! this is pretty much the last stage of the project.
did a bit of work on the tail, still working out the harness.

I've mostly decided that for the time being, I'm scrapping the idea of a moving jaw. the way I built the head doesn't allow for much room anyways (to move my jaw) and it's been making the process of making this costume frrustrating and unfun. So if I decide not to worry about it, I can just enjoy the project and finish what I've done so far!!! wicke d excited to see the final product  :D

so, I got all the fur on the head. I gotta shave it, I'm looking for someone to lend me a razor atm. I'm a little worried about visible seams when I shave it, as my pattern wasn't well made and I didn't sew it (I tried sewing one ear, messed up really bad, and quit); but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Maybe I'll just fold the edges.

anyways at this point i'm feeling really discouraged- eyes too small, face not defined enough, and it just looks bad in general. Oh well. It was my first try, I guess.
Title: Re: First Fursuit- I need help along the way!
Post by: Nori on July 29, 2016, 01:05:08 PM
Psh its better than my first head!! The eyes will pop out more when you shave, and it'll look better in general, I promise! Plus you can fill in missing spits with a scrap of fur, since you didn't sew it :)
Title: Re: First Fursuit- I need help along the way!

sewed my neck!

with jacket+bad lighting

so from wearing it for about 5 minutes, It's way too hot. I'm going to cut a lot from the inside foam (it's too snug on my nose), and I'd had some temporary sort of top jaw piece that will make it better ventilated if I cut it out. Onto the hands! I made 1 paw but it didn't fit the glove base I'd made, and I don't even want paws. I'm making hands to be true to the character, even though it's kind of weird as a fursuit, but that's what I want , so I'm gonna do it!!  :D

Looking really  good, nice job!
I would, however, suggest you also trim the fur to make it more 'tight' and neat. If you need any help with finding a decent (but reasonable priced) trimmer, let me know :)
Title: Re: First Fursuit- I need help along the way!
Post by: Andy on August 25, 2016, 07:48:33 PM
okay, time for an update!
I consider the project pretty much done. I trimmed the fur, added back eyelids, lined the mouth, added whiskers, etc etc but it still felt like it was missing something.
I decided to give it some more depth by drybrushing shadows/highlights with oil paints (rather than acrylic, because I just prefer oils and it seems to work better in dispersing in the fur).
before and after (sorry about the angle change). Darkened around snootle, eyes, ears; lightened around inside of eyes, some of the snout, and ears.
this is a quick comparison of the brushed vs nonbrushed side (right side is brushed). I'm gonna add more whiskers about where the paint ends.

A local grade school wants to commission me to make a mascot for their school (a partial), and with the profits from that I want to try my hand at a fullsuit. I'll open up a WIP thread for that too, since keeping up with this thread has been a lot of fun. Your input, compliments, and guidance have met so much to me!
