Title: Why do you draw?
Post by: Ventus Fall on May 18, 2016, 03:30:33 PM
Hello everyone :3

Over the years I have had various conversations with loads of people. People who draw, people who don't draw. Hobbyists, professionals. People who draw for fun or people who just need to get an idea onto paper.

Can you explain your motives as to why you draw? How does it feel when you draw? And when do you draw? Do you draw when you feel a certain emotion, or just to pass time?

My question to you is:
Why do you draw?

I myself draw for more than one reason:
1) I draw to make other people happy with my artwork. This is my main reason. Be it because of me drawing my own characters or worlds, or drawing other people's characters.
2) Putting down characters and worlds on paper is what I love, I've always had a huge imagination (so I've been told and I take pride in that ;D) and I want to draw the ideas down. That, and sharing the ideas with others.
3) I'm addicted to drawing. I cannot live without it. As soon as I haven't drawn for a while, my hands just feel they need to draw. Imagination or not, I need to.

I usually draw dragons and sometimes humans, specifically my OCs,  I do draw scenery to work on my POVs and I sometimes draw rough sketches of sword dimensions(ie. Blueprints.), and that's basically it.

But that's what you draw, not why you draw x3
Why do you draw mostly dragons and sometimes humans, and any other stuff you like to draw?

Mostly to deal with my problems, get away from it all and it really helps me relax when I'm in a fit of something.

Well, because I love to draw them, I just do and there really isn't a reason to why I do draw what I do. I just do.

I draw for many reasons!
Mostly it's because I love coming up with characters and drawing is a way of putting my idea down on paper as well as bringing them into the 'real' world. It's a good way of relieving boredom too. It feels so satisfying being able to drag a pencil across a page for a while and seeing something that looks nice come out of it as a result! I feel that drawing is also one of those things where you can watch yourself improve as you do it more and more, so it's satisfying in that way too. It's a great way to help express emotion and, of course, I like it when I'm able to make people happy with them! Who doesn't love a good compliment from time to time?  X3

@Razuel
Well that's a good a motivation/reason if any! ^^
And with dragon, do you tend to keep to one type of dragon or various types? (Western, Eastern, Fantasy?)

@Nutmeg
Hehe, glad to hear ^-^  And that improvement point you mentioned is a thing I have indeed thought about as well, why didn't I write that down as a reason? XD Good point.
Compliments are indeed nice to receive. I can't vent-art or such. I've tried. All those drawings look horrible though :P (Well, except for one)

I think vent-art isn't supposed to come out that well most of the time. Since your state of mind is so messed up at the moment, it's only natural your art would be too. Art that comes out of sadness though.. Those can look really nice.

I mean, that depends from person to person I believe. A large amount of people I watch and have watched on various art sites (dA, FA and more) actually can make vent art based on anger, sadness, etc.
I think it would also help if one can draw said piece in a reasonably small amount of time x3 I know I can't hold a certain emotion such as anger for days or weeks, or even months. Pffff :P

I draw because I'm trying to find something I'm good at O.o So why not practice my drawing skills?

I draw because it helps clear my head.
Your Avi is amazing btw, I love that style!

i draw to express my emotions
anger, fear, sadness, etc
my mental illness makes things real tough for me

i'm not very good at speaking or writing so drawing is a much better way for me to get a point across
hope that makes sense??

The same reason I like using photoshop: I can make what I think into existence

Drawing for me is like an itch. And the trigger of that certain itch is a tinge of inspiration every time I see something nice to draw. I get that inspiration from my fursona, the characters I see or some random idea popping into my mind. When I do have the urge to draw, I'd do it quickly because I'd go crazy if I can't put it on paper or digital art. I'm pretty new to this digital art thingy and my avatar is actually my first legit digital art painting, no joke. And by the way, I use Paint SAI.

I draw for a few reasons:
One to practice and get to the level of Magic the Gathering Art. >:D One day I want to go there! (As in the company, not go inside Zendikar or there magical world. lol.)
Two there are a lot of people out there who want there fursona to look cool! But simply lack the skill to do it, especially if they want to work on something else and become something like a coder. So that's where I come in and do my magic!
Three, it calms me down as much as writing does. So drawing basically takes my mind off of things.

Why do I draw? Hmm...

I'd say I draw just for the sake of it, but I'd also say there's a lot of pride involved, specifically when someone I know compliments me on my art. It's also for the learning experience, I guess. I've never had a real art class before, so basically everything I've learned has been from anime or books and throughout the years I've been drawing I've improved a lot. The experience of watching my progression has really encouraged me to continue and continues to encourage me.

However, I have a tendency to be extremely hard on my own art. Interpret that as a good thing or a bad thing, it helps me remember my mistakes and improve just a little bit the next time I draw something similar.

I think mostly I draw because I can't NOT draw. And I've tried! There's something in me that just has to get out, whether in the form of drawing, painting, calligraphy, or writing. The medium is less important than doing something. If I haven't done anything creative in a few days I get antsy and obsessive.

I want to make art for a living, but even if I never get their, I'll always be drawing.

Been away for a while and reading the responses made me quite happy, I'm glad everyone has their own reasons and ways to express themselves, cool!

@John Red Beard: Exactly the same here. I have tried, multiple times. In the end I've learned to always carry some A4 paper with me or a small drawing book in my backpack when I travel or go out. That way I can always draw if I feel the 'urge' XD
