Ok so I have an Acer AX-1430 desktop with windows 7, my OS (Windows 7) crashed completely. The pc will boot fine and it'll show the Acer logo and all the boot options but when it tries to boot up Win7 it just stays at a black screen. This is my primary school computer and ik i'll have to have it repaired but my worry is, if the OS is gone are all my files and stuff still ok?
-
The files are probably fine, but Windows is broken. I suggest that you grab a USB stick and use another computer, and follow these instructions here:

it just hit me.... I have a hard drive that used windows xp on it.... I could technically boot off that drive couldn't I? only thing I need to do is restore all the XP stuff to it since I deleted it to make the drive into my backup drive.
in any case this helps BIG time, thanks
-
Your files will be fine as long as the hard drive isn't corrupted. You can restore Windows 7 to your PC by using a backup disk or if you buy an Window 7 OS disk (but that might prove difficult since Windows 10 is out). This is not ideal to do because both methods requires you to format your PC's hard drive. I suggest getting it repaired by Acer or by Microsoft but be sure to backup your hard drive.
-
yeah that's what i'll wind up doing, sending it in to a repair shop. I'm unable to backup the drive since I can't access it, that's how badly it was damaged.
-
Just to clarify
Have you tried booting it up in safe-mode? Does it work then?
It's [possible] that it might not be windows, but instead be an external program that executes automatically during windows startup, or it could be a corrupt driver for a third party device. Best to check these out before going through all the hassle of getting it repaired. If it doesn't boot up in safemode, then yeah it's almost definitely windows.
-
<.< already ran through the drill, safe mode normal nothing at all will boot, not even windows startup repair, it detected problems that it couldn't fix then it just died. won't boot anything at all, not even boot disks are working.

im going to ask the question NOBODY asked
is the drive making any noises like clicking like a dolphin (its a techie joke i know about also thats what it kinda sound like)
and just to add this
heres linus to help you know what to look for
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TETQ_oCJgFI#)

actually it is now that I think about it, when windows started having trouble it'd click a few times when i'd boot it up, now it's silent.

yea thats whats called the main board possibly dying off (its controller that tells it what to do and interfaces with the whole pc) and those are tricky if you can find a way to replace it (do it by someone who knows hard drives are a pain)
-
same thing that happened to my first laptop, fried the mother board testing flight sims

if you fried a motherboard it was overvoltage or spilling something on it
and no a hard drives is alot trickyer because you need the same model drive and year
also need a clean room (hyperfiltered air, dustless air, clean suits (the white ones) masks to stop anything from your breath) thats why you get a pro to do the hard drive
-
yeah that's why i'm gonna take it to a shop when I got the money...hopefully it can be fixed.

IF its possible and its the main board and they can source a new one with everything matching its possible to do and have 0 data lose otherwise its dead as dead can be take it from them smash it to bits if you have the tools take it apart and remove the platters and destroy those and enjoy a paper weight from your dead drive
-
ugh... don't want to have to do that but oh well. had a desktop the was 15 years old, big enough to be a desk. nothing was ever wrong with it but when I got this new POS the old one had to go so the drives were smashed, starting to wish I kept it around ya know?
-

ick I withdraw my offer ^_^

The OS itself is just a shell, and your files will still be recoverable; as should the OS.
I'd take it in asap for them to recover it if you have no access to any sort of recovery equipment/software yourself.
-
i'll have it put in a shop as soon as the money for it appears lol, my parents seem to be up to something regarding both my birthday and this computer so I got 9 days to find out what

Did your school give it to you, or did someone from your family buy it?
If by 'school computer' you mean that the school gave it to you, then take it in and ask them for help. You'll likely get it done quicker.
Otherwise, best of luck.
-
puh it was a family hand-me-down. and it's useless now bc it's so old (which is bs imo) the tech's at the pc shop won't touch it unless I give them $300 and even then I might lose everything. so it's a goner.

OP Invest in a sata drive reader, back up all the files on the hdd, then reinstall Windows 7 over the hdd and copy files back over. Although, I am assuming you have access to another computer. Another thing you can do is use a friends computer and setup a live linux usb. Then just copy everything off of the harddrive reinstall W7.

too late we already put a few bullets in the drive. there was no way to recover anything at all.
since the subject is no longer of relevance I request the thread be locked. thx guys for your help.
