I never understood why furries need shoes.
In art I depict them barefoot, even in a modern setting, because they already have pawpads/hooves/talons to protect them from whatever could be on the ground like their feral counterparts.
Plus, nearly every species has a different foot type. It just seems like a hassle for companies to make shoes for individual furs. Bears are the only animals besides humans to walk flat-footed, and bears have tough feet, so it kind of defeats the purpose.
-shrugs-

I see that like comparing humans to chimpanzees. Even though they look the same, there's a lot of biological difference.
Furries are civilized (in the anthropological sense) and therefore weaker than their feral counterparts, so it's the same situation as humans. Technology and comfort makes you soft. Ferals, on the other hand, are still evolved from the hardships of nature and biologically rely completely on having tough, efficient bodies.
Soooo...furries need shoes for the same reason humans do. XP
-
I know what you mean. I love being able to feel free... that and they dont make shoes for someone like me
-
I suppose George, but I like to think some furries are more animalistic than others.
Like, one furry may use silverware but another will walk into a steakhouse and eat their rib-eye with their paws.

Yep! I was just talking about the ones who do wear shoes since you said

Okay. ^^
-
I try not to wear shoes irl if I dont have to so I wont make sunder wear them
-
I would imagine that it's hard to wear shoes on footpaws. Cecil has shoes simply because I think they look nice on him.
-
Well, if instead of one shoe company, there was a company run by each species to create footwear for the species, I see no problem.
-
I don't really know what I like better, Clothed furries or naked ones. There are nice things about both styles.
-
I've never considered furries and shoes until now. But since you brought it up, I'd say that shoes would be goofy on most furries.
Otherwise, it's a minor thing.
-
My claws would poke through most shoes
-
When I made my profile picture, and I came to the shoes, I was a little unsure, on how to do it. So I just drew him without shoes :P

See he knows whats up

Being barefoot is really comfy, so I don't need shoes. They might be really warm too since paws have a layer of fur already ^^' (except irl I like wearing socks cause my feet get cold). But I don't see why you can't put shoes/sandals/boots/socks on anthros if you want to. Some wear clothes, some wear none, and some wear just a few accessories. It's personal preference :)
-
It's personal preference :)
This is the concise version of what I meant to say before. XD
-
i like shoes .......
-
Sometimes I draw shoes, sometimes I don't. :P
I've never really put much thought into it though... I'm cool with either idea, myself. I just draw shoes when I don't feel like drawing paws. XP I'm better at drawing sneakers than paws.

My image of furries involve digitigrade legs, so shoes aren't that feasible, though I imagine wearing foot wraps of some kind when needed.

I once designed shoes for digitigrade legs. It is indeed feasible.

Really? That's cool.
-
When someone can find shoes that are comfier than just having cloven hooves for feet, let me know.
-
I think it's a personal preference/artistic choice. Personally, I enjoy my furries without shoes. I also tend to draw my furs with digigrade legs unless they're something like a bear or otter.

How can you not see furries wearing J's? (Jordans for those who don't know)

Because I can't see me wearing them furry or otherwise! XD
-
How bout flip-flops, Moccasins, boat shoes, Timbs, god forbid Crocs?
-
Socks and sandals, because I'm a monster.
That's what I imagine furries wearing too.

Oh no, spare my eyes X3

I'll say it's a bit odd to see furries with shoes, but I guess it depends on how it's done. Some look better with them while others look better without them. As far as practically, furries wouldn't really need them.

It would really depend on species and location I suppose. As a rabbit I don't have footpads, so depending on where I was they may be necessary, y'know? For now though, it remains a matter of preference I guess. :/ ^_^
-
I'm cool with shoe-wearing furs and furs without shoes. Both have their pros and cons. :P
-
Bare paws for me! >.>;
-
Mmm...... I believe River's claws would rip through her shoes, and even if they didn't, I imagine it'd be quite painful to jam them into one. I think it depends on the sona themselves :)
-

Depends on the shoes, too!
-
I personally prefer my anthros more human so they wear clothes and occasionally shoes. Despite my human preference, I like my anthros with digitigrade feet because I hate drawing plantigrade unless their wearing high heels XP
I actually have a way of drawing a "shoe" on digitigrade feet, but I prefer just having them wear stockings or somthing >w<
Either way I really don't think its weird unless the character is more animal than human and even then its personal preference^^
-
I definitely see myself as barefoot when I am my fursona, for a lot of reasons you said and also because I like the feel of not having to necessarily conform to societal "musts" like clothes (maybe it is my lust for the freedom of human societal bonds of an animal like a wolf :3 ). I think it all comes down to preference, though, as I've seen furs with and without shoes :/ also, some furs have more human--like feet and toes, but my fursona has canine feet and toes, so it also goes with design as well and really how much of a 'human' is in your animal, if that makes sense :)
-
Oh god yes barefooted. [removed content]
-
Uhh...
But shoes are nice, not sure how they look on a fursuit though... (Probably pretty silly XP)
-

Well like I said, depends on species. Rabbits don't have footpads, after all they don't walk on pavement every day. Some sort of foot protection would be necessary.
-
I imagine furries wearing shoes or not depends on what they do. With my furry characters, their feet are pretty rugged and are usually barefoot unless doing an activity which is safer with protection on their feet, such as construction, mining, experimenting in a chemical lab, stuff like that. Naturally, people like to make things less stressful on themselves if possible, so I feel it would make sense for furries to wear shoes if they feel it's more comfy and helpful.

Too me you would have too look at the foot first is it more human like or more animal like. Becuse the way I see anthro putting shoes on them would just be extremely uncomfortable like wearing a tie it would be more for dressy occasions.
-
i feel it depends on the Furry wearing them. Bare paws for me as i am a wolf and i cant see anything to fit my paws in. and because i have pads on the bottoms of my feet-er...PAWS...i dont need them. i have fur to keep my toesies warm. aside from having EXTREMELY ticklish paws, theres no need for me to wear them. but i guess for others if they are more anthro (im pure wolf) then they may have normal human feet, but if they do have paws maybe they dont have the pads like some so...maybe they do. just simply a personal thing. on top of that, maybe furries just think shoes would look cool on them
-
In a furry world I imagine they would design shoes that are shaped to fit various types of feet, not standard human feet. :P
Since furries can be so varied, they'd likely need custom shoes much of the time. That can be expensive. Maybe that's why most go barefoot!

Finally, someone acknowledges that shoes are made for feet, not feet needing to be a certain way to fit shoes. XP
-
yeah really
-
No shoes -3-
-
not for me at least
-
I feel like it really spends on the design of the character. If they have larger animal paws or hooves and digi legs shoes don't seem to make a lot of sense. But some anthros have more human like builds and shoes make sense then I think.
-
Nyeh, its subjective, red doesn't wear shoes, but thats becuse his feet are huge, and he's a alien...and stuff...
-
so yeah generally depends on the furr
-
I would say it depends on the fur in question. Are their feet more like the animal portion or more like the human portion? I feel that the more humanoid the foot, the better the idea of shoes fits. And in some cases, high heels and sandal-like footwear could work well for both kinds of feet.
-
I don't like shoes on furries. It is more human than animal.
-
i have to agree with raven
-
Lots of neat opinions and ideas here :)

yeah no joke
-
I have to agree with you about different paws, claws, hooves, etc. I don't really understand how shoes would work on an anthropomorphic animal, but if others like it, then I don't care.
-
In my eyes, the whole idea of furries wearing shoes feels like more of an aesthetic more than for function, especially if they have the species' feet (hooves, paws etc.). Especially difficult would it be for those who (like my fur) have hooves without the proper ankle-footblade angle, and therefore would need a sort of calf straps.
-
fair point
-
My fur does wear shoes, but that's because her feet while not paws are fairly large and they end in claws rather than nails.
-
I don't like shoes on furries. It is more human than animal.
Why isn't that okay?
-
I think that, if you have digitigrades legs, you don't have to wear shoes.
Because I don't see anyway good looking shoes on that, furthermore it's made to walk around in any environnement, it's way better than human feets (and legs).
So yeah, no shoes for Furries, at least for me
